El empleo resiliente de las sociedades cooperativas en relación con el ODS-8
Cooperative employment was resilient during the 2008 financial crisis
at the global level and at the European level, based on this finding, it was
necessary to know the cooperative employment during the COVID-19 health
crisis. The interaction between employment and the economic cycle allows us
to observe the most recent behavior of cooperatives in Spain and to discuss the
achievement of SDG-8 decent work and economic growth. This analysis aimed
to determine the employment-generating potential of Spanish cooperatives.
An inductive methodology was used through automation in three analyses. The
results found that decent and resilient cooperative employment is concentrated
in four regions: Catalonia, Galicia, Extremadura, and Murcia. Over the period

Ultrasound-Assisted Cold Alkaline Extraction: Increasing Hemicellulose Extraction and Energy Production from Populus Wood
Alkaline pretreatments are considered highly effective for the separation of the different
components of lignocellulosic biomass. However, cold alkaline extraction (CAE) exhibits minimal
modification/degradation of hemicellulosic fraction and successfully accomplishes efficient delignification.
In this research, the fast-growing clone AF2 of Populus x euramericana wood was utilized as the
raw material and subjected to ultrasound-assisted CAE. The objective of incorporating ultrasound
into cold alkaline extraction is to increase the yield of a hemicellulosic-rich liquid phase that can be
used to produce high-value products such as furfural or xylitol. Simultaneously, it aims to obtain a
solid phase with a higher calorific value compared to the raw material. The results, obtained from a
central composite factorial design, demonstrated that the CAE process for 90 min at a sodium hydroxide
concentration of 100 g L−1, a temperature of 30 ◦C, and with ultrasound assistance maximized
hemicellulose extraction in the liquid phase (60.8% was extracted) and improved the heating value of
solid phase. This work was funded by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation, and also by

Educommunication and empowerment in cardiovascular health of Lisbon citizens
Existen pruebas de que las competencias en eSalud y el hecho de padecer una enfermedad cardiovascular influyen en la búsqueda de información y en la capacitaciónOnline educommunication and empowerment are crucial dimensions in awareness, literacy and change processes, and their articulation may bring benefits to cardiovascular health, given that cardiovascular diseases are the deadliest in the world, including in Portugal. This paper aims to explore the relationship between online educommunication and empowerment in cardiovascular health, using Lisbon citizens as a case. The theoretical framework is composed by the interactivity and empowerment model, the health belief model and the uses and gratifications theory. The questionnaire survey was applied to a gender and age quota sample (N=400). The questionnaire includes thematic dimensions, such as online informative practices on cardiovascular health, the eHEALS scale, and the importance and effectiveness of the educommunicative message on cardiovascular health features. Results show that the educommunicative message has characteristics at the level of purpose, content, type, format, emotions, and logic, which enhance it the most. This indicates that exposure to messages with these characteristics may instigate empowerment and behavior change. Respondents self-rated with the most positive levels on the eHEALS scale, showing empowerment at the eHealth level, with age rather than gender differences. There is evidence that eHealth skills and having cardiovascular disease influence information seeking and empowerment. The main contribution lies in identifying characteristics of the cardiovascular health educommunication message that can optimize recipient’s empowermen
The association between dietary fiber intake and gastric cancer: a pooled analysis of 11 case–control studies
Purpose: Gastric cancer (GC) is among the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between dietary fiber intake and GC.
Methods: We pooled data from 11 population or hospital-based case–control studies included in the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project, for a total of 4865 histologically confirmed cases and 10,626 controls. Intake of dietary fibers and other dietary factors was collected using food frequency questionnaires. We calculated the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the association between dietary fiber intake and GC by using a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for study site, sex, age, caloric intake, smoking, fruit and vegetable intake, and socioeconomic status. We conducted stratified analyses by these factors, as well as GC anatomical site and histological type.
Results: The OR of GC for an increase of one quartile of fiber intake was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.85, 0.97), that for the highest compared to the lowest quartile of dietary fiber intake was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.88). Results were similar irrespective of anatomical site and histological type.
Conclusion: Our analysis supports the hypothesis that dietary fiber intake may exert a protective effect on GC.Open access funding provided by Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna within the CRUI-CARE Agreement. Methylmercury Effect and Distribution in Two Extremophile Microalgae Strains Dunaliella salina and Coccomyxa onubensis from Andalusia (Spain)
The main entrance point of highly toxic organic Hg forms, including methylmercury (MeHg), into the aquatic food web is phytoplankton, which is greatly represented by various natural microalgal species. Processes associated with MeHg fate in microalgae cells such as uptake, effects on cells and toxicity, Hg biotransformation, and intracellular stability are detrimental to the process of further biomagnification and, as a consequence, have great importance for human health. The study of MeHg uptake and distribution in cultures of marine halophile Dunaliella salina and freshwater acidophilic alga Coccomyxa onubensis demonstrated that most of the MeHg is imported inside the cell, while cell surface adhesion is insignificant. Almost all MeHg is removed from the culture medium after 72 h. Significant processes in rapid MeHg removal from liquid medium are its abiotic photodegradation and volatilization associated with algal enzymatic activity. The maximum intracellular accumulation for both species was in 80 nM MeHg-exposed cultures after 24 h of exposure for D. salina (from 27 to 34 µg/gDW) and at 48 h for C. onubensis (up to 138 µg/gDW). The different Hg intakes in these two strains could be explained by the lack of a rigid cell wall in D. salina and the higher chemical ability of MeHg to pass through complex cell wall structures in C. onubensis. Electron microscopy studies on the ultrastructure of both strains demonstrated obvious microvacuolization in the form of many very small vacuoles and partial cell membrane disruption in 80 nM MeHg-exposed cultures. Results further showed that Coccomyxa onubensis is a good candidate for MeHg-contaminated water reclamation due to its great robustness at nanomolar concentrations of MeHg coupled with its very high intake and almost complete Hg removal from liquid medium at the MeHg levels tested. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry,

A Comparative Study on the Quality of Life of Survivors of Stroke and Acute Myocardial Infarction
Background: Worldwide, cardiovascular diseases, particularly acute myocardial infarction
and strokes, lead to significant fatalities. Survivors often experience profound impacts on various
aspects of their lives, making the assessment of their Quality of Life crucial for understanding their
condition and adaptation to the illness. Methods: A community-based, descriptive cross-sectional
study was conducted to compare how survivors of stroke and acute myocardial infarction perceive
their Quality of Life. The Portuguese version of the World Health Organization Quality of life
instrument was administered to 204 acute myocardial infarction and stroke survivors. Clinical
and sociodemographic variables were also compared. Results: Statistically significant differences
(p < 0.05) were noted in overall, physical, and psychological aspects of Quality of Life between the two
groups, with stroke survivors consistently showing lower values in these dimensions. Conclusions:
The Quality-of-Life perception of stroke and acute myocardial infarction survivors may be affected
by several sociodemographic and clinical factors, and the results support the idea that the vascular
event conditions the person’s Quality of Life, particularly in variables related to the person’s physical
condition, functionality, and autonomy.Enfermerí
