    Farming and biochar in the EU and the road to sustainability : Drawing connections through the Common Agricultural Policy and the regulation of organic and carbon farming

    Considering the significant impact of agriculture on the environment, there is corresponding potential residing in proper management of agricultural soils and in farming. Agricultural systems are instrumental to achieving climate and environmental goals and for paving the road towards sustainability. However, this requires a transition from business-as-usual agriculture and farming, which must be supported by policy and legislation through systemic and coordinated measures. Other more pointed measures, such as the targeted use of certain technologies, for example, the proper use of biochar, can also be leveraged. But what is the state of play in the pursuit of sustainability in farming in the EU legislation and policy? How significant are these developments for biochar in the transition towards sustainability? This article considers these issues in relation to three different yet connected policy and legislative fields in the broader agriculture domain: the Common Agricultural Policy, organic farming and the emerging domain of carbon farming.Considering the significant impact of agriculture on the environment, there is corresponding potential residing in proper management of agricultural soils and in farming.     Converting laser scans of tubular joints to finite element models

    Jacket type substructures for offshore wind turbines gained prominence in the 2010s, especially in wind farms where monopiles became less feasible due to increasing water depths. As these turbines near the end of their design life, extending their operational lifetime or repowering offers significant economic and ecological advantages compared to decommissioning. However, these strategies both require an accurate assessment of the remaining fatigue life of the substructure. Previous studies showed that the actual weld geometry strongly affects local stress concentrations, influencing the fatigue life of offshore substructures. Current fatigue assessments in the design phase assume perfectly cylindrical tubular members with simplified welds, while also omitting surface degradation effects. This research aims to improve the fatigue assessment of offshore jackets by incorporating the as-built joint geometry, including ovality, out-of-roundness, surface irregularities, and the real weld geometry, to better estimate stress concentrations and fatigue damage accumulation. Four full-scale tubular joints were scanned. The joints originate from a decommissioned gas platform jacket that was installed in the North Sea in the 1980s and was decommissioned in 2023. A handheld 3D laser scanner was used to capture the real geometry of the joints. Since the scanning principle is based on the reflection of light, only the outer surface can be scanned.     Verb-final subject suffixes in Ngwi (West-Coastal Bantu B861, DRC) : language-internal innovation or language-external imposition?

    This chapter presents a preliminary analysis of the synchronic distribution and diachronic origins of subject suffixes in the West-Coastal Bantu language Ngwi (B861). We describe their present-day use in six different monoverbal affirmative future and past constructions and in one biverbal affirmative construction. Except for subject suffixes, which are highly unusual from a Bantu-centric perspective, monoverbal affirmative past and future constructions in Ngwi are significantly more conservative than aspectual constructions with present-time reference and prefixal subject indexes. Past morphology is inherited from Proto-Bantu, while future morphology is built on the past template with some innovative future-specific forms. In the biverbal affirmative construction, the subject index follows the erstwhile auxiliary, which is undergoing univerbation with the nominalized lexical verb. Even though they could presumably be a recent innovation, we are unable to identify a language-internal source construction from which subject suffixes could have originated in Ngwi. Hence, we speculate that this innovative feature may have a language-external source, possibly first-language imposition from shifters originally speaking a non-Bantu language with subject suffixes.     Accurate, precise, and verifiable photoluminescence efficiency of colloidal quantum dots sols by photothermal threshold quantum yield analysis

    Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have become multipurpose luminophores that combine a broad excitation with a narrow emission spectrum. Applications in displays, lighting, or solar-energy conversion, however, require quantum dots that have a photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) approaching unity. This need makes the accurate, precise, and verifiable determination of the photoluminescence efficiency of QDs of utmost importance for the field. Here, we describe photothermal threshold quantum yield as a calorimetric method for measuring the PLQY of QDs in liquid dispersions. Taking the example of InP-based core/shell QDs, we detail the principles behind the analysis, and we benchmark results relative to the spectroscopic determination using an absolute PLQY measurement with an integrating sphere.     A sustainable irrigation based on a soil water balance model for the production of Carpinus betulus L.

    Until recently, it was possible to produce high-quality avenue trees through rain-fed methods. However, due to recent prolonged drought periods during the growing season, the growth and quality of the trees are impacted, leading to a lower economic value. Therefore, the tree nursery sector requires irrigation thresholds and appropriate tools such as plant and soil sensors to schedule irrigation according to crop water needs. In 2022 and 2023, a trial was performed on 3- and 4-year-old hornbeam avenue trees (Carpinus betulus L.), in which a rain-fed treatment was compared with a drip-irrigated treatment. Irrigation doses were determined according to a calibrated soil water balance model, based on reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0), rainfall, and soil hydraulic properties. In 2022, irrigation was mostly applied during the dry months of July and August. Although the effect of irrigation on soil moisture was less straightforward, it had a positive effect on stem water potential. In 2023, the trees were only irrigated during the dry month of June. This had a positive effect on both the soil and the stem water potential.
