Safe, ethical, and open research in the age of artificial intelligence
Watch VIDEO.
It has been 40 years since the launch of the GNU project and the Free Software Movement in September 1983. Open Source followed in 1998, Open Access in 2002, Citizen Science in 1995, the Bermuda Principles for open genomic data in 1996, and Open Science was first used as a phrase in 1985. Elinor Ostrom published her Nobel Prize winning "Governing the Commons" in 1990. There has been exceptional adoption and promotion of open research practices in the last 20 years, and there has also been significant drift from the original vision of democratising access to knowledge. In the age of artificial intelligence, are we meeting our ethical responsibilities to use data responsibly? Are we using scholarly communications to dismantle oppressive and exclusive power structures? What more work must we undertake? In this keynote presentation, Dr Kirstie Whitaker will identify core tenets of open research in 2023 and propose an integration with the SAFE-D principles for responsible research and innovation. Developed by David Leslie at The Alan Turing Institute in 2019, these principles facilitate reflection and self-assessment of the safety and sustainability, accountability, fairness and non-discrimination, and explainability and transparency of a research and innovation outputs, including a consideration of data quality, integrity, protection and privacy. Kirstie will explore with the audience whether the scholarly publishing community is ready to address the biggest societal challenges of our time, how we assess and incentivise responsible and ethical development of socio-technical solutions, and how our infrastructure can facilitate interdisciplinary teams to create outputs that are greater than the sum of their parts. All attendees will be invited to join the 800+ members of the open source, open collaboration, and community-driven Turing Way community. Developed on GitHub under open source licences, our shared goal is to provide all the information that researchers and data scientists in academia, industry and the public sector need to ensure that the projects they work on are easy to reproduce and reuse
Book Launch and Scientific Workshop "Follow Your Heart. The School for Multipotentialites"
The overall aim of this report is to document the experience gained during the book launch and co-created, experiential workshop on the book "Follow Your Heart: the school for multipotentialites." Reflecting on the dynamic process triggered by the research gathered and further developed throughout the book helps to create ideas and practices toward transformative change in research and education. The authors planned three book launches, structured as innovative academic presentations combined with creativity workshops that follow some of the suggested activities that were specifically created for the book. The first book launch was held in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, UK, and hosted by the educational farm The Good Life Projects, coordinated by Craig Stevens, on February 18, 2023. The proceeds from the book launch (collected through book sales) were donated to Windsor Hill Wood, a place of refuge and community in the local area that helps people heal, grow, and rebuild their lives while taking care of nature and encouraging sustainable livelihoods. Windsor Hill Wood as a community and philosophy closely align with the authors\u27 beliefs and the main concepts of Follow Your Heart, which made the overall impact of the first book launch exceptionally more meaningful. This report is designed to share the key insights from the event and promote further discussion within the field of emotional and ecological education, in line with the project ECO_CARE. The report is accordingly divided into the following sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Follow Your Heart: audience, vision and development; 3. Ways forward; 4. Reference list
Cold seeps symphony
Focus:
To listen to the Arctic Ocean’s sounds and to learn about the Arctic Ocean’s biodiversity, particularly near cold seeps. We will experiment with creating new sound expressions inspired by the Ocean. For pupils with hearing impairment, pupils can create a bodily expression of this and/or use instruments they are comfortable with.
Learning objectives:
With this activity pupils will start to understand:
The multitude of sounds audible in the Ocean and near to cold seeps at the sea-bed.
That the oceans, including the Arctic Ocean, harbors great biodiversity.
What an oceanographic ship is, and the anthropic sounds related to it.
Key words:
Ocean research, exploration, human/non-human relationship within ocean, sounds, place, noise
Слухаємо світ навколо нас
Focus:
To take time to identify and recognize the sounds in the spaces around us.
Learning objectives:
With this activity, we will draw attention to our surrounding environment through listening. This can function as a stand-alone activity. However, you can also use it as a starting point before transferring the experience to deep- sea environments in the activity called “Cold Seeps Symphony”.
Key words:
Spatial awareness, listening, sound walk, noise pollution.
Får man skämta om allt? - Yttrandefrihet, berättigande och kontext i humor
In this article, humour about sensitive and taboo subjects is analyzed from three perspectives: freedom of speech, entitlement, and context. Freedom of speech, in the form of the right to joke about anything, can be seen as an important principle in humour discourses. In debates about humour, it is common to refer to freedom of speech in defense of what has been criticized. In my empirical material, however, a principle of entitlement is also articulated that concerns what kind of jokes you have the right to tell depending on who you are. The principle of entitlement contravenes the principle of freedom of speech. Finally, the context of a joke is also important for what you can joke about. When a comical expression is recorded and spread through social media and/or streaming services to another audience than that it was originally meant for, there is a risk that some individuals and/or groups in society will interpret it in another way and perceive it as offensive.I den här artikeln analyserar jag humor om känsliga och tabubelagda ämnen utifrån tre perspektiv: yttrandefrihet, berättigande och kontext.
