Holberg in Context: A View from Intellectual History

    No full text
A prolific and versatile writer, Ludvig Holberg has long been the subject of intense scholarly debate about the identity of his thought and the best way of interpreting his works. What, in particular, has muddied the waters is his use of multifarious textual techniques and conventions, including the use of a broad array of literary genres, a plurality of voices, and diverse literary, historical, and intellectual sources. Engaging, critically, with current contextualist scholarship, this article focuses on what intellectual history can bring to the study of Holberg. Hence, as the article aims to show, thinking in a particular way about the context of Holberg’s works, that is, in conjunction with the languages and personae that inhabit his writings, may help us to better understand the textual conventions and techniques that he employed in his writings, thereby illuminating his identity as a writer

The Swedish Servant Acts compulsed everyone without an occupation to take up service as a servant. However it is unclear to what extent this compulsion was actually enforced. Repeated complaints from the authorities give the impression that it was largely ignored. One suspicion was that people chose to live with relatives rather than taking service. A list compiled by the Stockholms authorities enables a quantification of mostly women who evaded service around 1755. The study shows that up to a fifth of all female servants were suspected of being live ins rather than employed as servants, and most of them problably earned their living in the informal sector of the urban economy. A comparison with tax registers reveals that these people were accounted for. In conclusion, while historical scholarship is dependent upon ample source material, this study suggests that a good part of the servant population was recorded in tax registers, but that the nature of their service might not have been properly accounted for, and that many servants provided for themselves on an extensive informal economy of the city which is difficult to quantify

Tanker om trøst og urørlighetssonen ved spiralinnleggelse

Young women tell of an experience of strong embarrassment at their first gynecological examinations. An embarrassment that can bear the stamp of humiliation and exposure. In this scientific essay, we take a closer look at the significance of how public health nurses meet these young women, and how consolation as a phenomenon can be relevant in these meetings. Through the youth health center and the student health service, public health nurses meet many young women who want an intrauterine device. For many of these women, it is the first time they have had a gynecological visit. In this context the text is written from the public health nursing gaze of the authors meetings with vulnerable children and grownups and young women receiving intrauterine device as contraception. We want to explore how public health nurses can be open to consolation when we are close to young women’s zone of untouchability during intrauterine device insertion. The intention is not to give a clear answer, but the interpretation of the text has shown that awareness and reflection about safeguarding the zone of untouchability can be important for consolation to young women having an intrauterine device. Such reflections can be valuable knowledge for healthcare professionals who carry out intrauterine device insertion.

The purpose of this essay is to shed light on what consolation in nursing can be and how contact between patient and nurse can be experienced as consolation. The background for the essay is a patient\u27s letter to the nurse about the importance of having someone to talk to. Through conversation with the patient the nurse establishes a unique contact that has its own characteristics and boundaries. We may believe that we are comforting a patient. However, it might not be so. Consolation is a mystery and does not happen on the nurses\u27 terms. Nurses must talk to patients, get involved and be touched by their suffering. The patient can then feel consoled. On a busy day, it can be challenging to engage in a comforting process with the patient, but it is not impossible.

Home treatment of infections with intravenous antibiotics is common internationally but is uncommon in Norway. The purpose of this study was to survey a patient population and to describe patients\u27 experiences with intravenous home treatment with antibiotics and to assess the feasibility of the course of treatment. All patients treated at home with intravenous antibiotics from November 2016 to June 2021 were asked to participate in the study. Journal review and questionnaires were used to collect data. Quantitative data were processed with descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed with manifest content analysis. The study includes 175 patients with an average age of 65 years. The most frequent infections were endocarditis, prosthesis infection and septic arthritis. The study showed that the patients were very satisfied with home treatment and that also elderly patients could be treated at home (45% were ≥70 years old). 90% of the patients answered that they would choose home treatment again if they needed it and that home treatment increased well-being and subjective quality of life, but that training of and follow-up from clinical staff were important.
