Coordinators and modification markers as categoryless functional elements
Get PDFA coordinate construction is built by two basic levels of combination: a categoryless functional head is combined with a conjunct, and the result is combined with a categorizer, which is the other conjunct. The first combination is seen in all structures headed by a functional element, and the latter is seen in the categorization of a root. The same two levels of combination are also seen in a modification construction. A categoryless functional head is realized by a coordinator or a modification marker. The positions of the low and high conjunct are also those of a modifier and the modified element, respectively. Thus, neither a coordinate construction nor a modification construction has a construction-specific structural representation or functional head. This means that no coordinate construction is built by any construction-specific operation and there is no stipulated Adjunction operation. The categoryless functional head can also be found in compounds, which can also be categoryless, like single root
The Workspace as a source of hierarchy in extended projections
Get PDFExtended projections (EPs) in natural languages have several properties which have not yet been explained. (i) EPs conform to a Hierarchy of Projections (HoP), a crosslinguistically similar hierarchical arrangement of semantically grounded categories. (ii) Each token of an EP is linear, in the sense that it has a single dimension (with specifiers and adjuncts stripped out, it is a string). (iii) HoPs are rooted in a lexical category with conceptual content at the bottom, and a succession of functional elements above. I argue that these properties motivate a particular architecture of the workspaces in which sentences are constructed. I model the workspace as a Finite State Automaton (FSA) with a monotonicity property which underpins hierarchy. The FSA starts from a lexical category (cf. (iii)), `projecting\u27 it into an EP. Transitions correspond to applications of Merge, and states are stages in the derivation. The sequence of states in a path from start to accepting state is a string, the EP (cf. (ii)). The HoP is then the entire FSA, arranged with the start at the bottom and the final state, the complete clause or noun phrase, at the top (cf. (i))

No full textForut for arbeid på Nilsenhuset ble det gjort arkeologisk utgravning av et mindre areal langs husveggen, sentralt på bosetnings- og aktivitetsflaten id 48029-1. Lokaliteten ligger midt i verdensarvområdet for bergkunst i Hjemmeluft/Jiepmaluokta i Alta. Størstedelen av det undersøkte arealet var forstyrret av nyere tids aktivitet, men mot sør kom det frem et intakt lag av varmepåvirket sand og grus med mye skjørbrent stein. Det ble gjort funn av 310 gjenstander i harde krystallinske bergarter og skifer. Funnene ble gjort både i det forstyrrede område og i det varmepåvirkede laget. Tre prøver fra det intakte laget ga dateringer til perioden 4000-3100 f.Kr. To prøver fra det forstyrrede området ga nyere tids dateringer. Det ble ikke påvist noen strukturer, men det varmepåvirkede laget indikerer intensiv bruk og at området sør for huset har potensiale for strukturer og større tidsdyp

Tröst: Vad det är och vad det inte är
No full textWhat is consolation [comfort], what is it not and is consolation relevant to professional care today. These questions are analysed in this essay. The starting point is Roxberg’s thesis about consolation. The ethical explication of ’personhood’ and of inner and outer truths are moulding the theoretical framework and the horizon of understanding is foremost from the Book of Job in the Old Testament. Job is afflicted by disease and accidents and his friends try to console him, but Job is not consoled. Their consolation is non-consolation, and the question is why? The friends lack openness to Job’s suffering and their locked perceptions about the right consolation for Job are understood as the hermeneutic idea of the conflict of interpretations is missing. On the playfield of consolation there is only one team to play against, their own truth. Consolation becomes a lonely team player without any team to play against.Vad är tröst, vad är inte tröst och är tröst är relevant för professionell vård idag? Dessa frågeställningar analyseras och utläggs i essayns form. Utgångpunkten för analysen är Roxbergs avhandling om tröst. Ricoeurs och Kristensson Ugglas etiska utläggning av ’personhood’ och av inre och yttre sanning bildar teoretiskt ramverk och förståelsehorisonten är främst från Jobs bok i Gamla testamentet. Job råkar ut för sjukdom och olyckor och Jobs vänner försöker trösta men Job blir inte tröstad. Deras tröst är en icke-tröst som inte tröstar och frågan är varför. Vännernas brist på öppenhet för Jobs lidande och låsta uppfattning om vad som är rätt tröst för Job uppfattas som att den hermeneutiska idén om tolkningarnas konflikt uteblir. På tröstens spelplan finns bara ett lag, den egna sanningen. Det saknas ett lag att spela mot, den andres sanning. Trösten blir då en ensam lagspelare utan lag att spela mot.
Absurd Life Simulated Upon the Blank Canvas of the World: Cormac McCarthy’s The Road alongside Baudrillard and Camus
Get PDFCormac McCarthy’s novel The Road (2006) and Albert Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), grapple with the choice of suicide versus struggle when meaning is exposed as socially fabricated. McCarthy declares, “there is no god and we are his prophets”, a dismal idea if one is searching for external meaning but conversely an empowering permission to create. McCarthy juxtaposes a father who chooses to produce absurd meaning with a mother who rationally commits suicide. Using Jean Baudrillard’s philosophical lens to read The Road, forces the reader to walk through a world of simulacra where floating signifiers are detached from meaning. Combining The Road, Simulacra and Simulation, and The Myth of Sisyphus, exposes that living is irrational because the simulation we have incarcerated ourselves within is absurd; however, McCarthy shows that in embracing the artistic struggle of creating a personal construct we feel most alive.Cormac McCarthys roman The Road (2006) og Albert Camus’ Myten om Sisyfos (1942) tematiserer valget mellom selvmord og en monoton kamp etter at meningsillusjonen er blitt avslørt som en sosial fabrikasjon. Ved å kombinere The Road, Simulacra and Simulation og Myten om Sisyfos avslører at tilværelsen er irrasjonell fordi fordi simulasjonen vi har fanget oss selv i er absurd. McCarthy viser likevel at vi ved å omfavne en kunstnerisk kamp for å skape et personlig konstrukt er i stand til å føle oss levende
