Nordic Reindeer Husbandry Conference 2025, 12-14 February, Alta, Norway: Reindeer Husbandry in an unpredictable future
Climate change, increasing land use pressures on the use of land, challenges and necessary adaptation are factors that lead to uncertainty for reindeer husbandry in the future. In collaboration with NKJ (The Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural and Food Research) and RUF (Reindriftens utviklingsfond), NIBIO (Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy) invites to a reindeer husbandry conference at Scandic Hotel Alta, 12th – 14th February 2025. The main topics of the conference are climate change and challenges of current and future land use. The conference will be divided into two parts: Part 1 (12th – 13th February) is mainly for researchers and is held in English but is also open to others. Part 2 (13th – 14th February) targets reindeer herders, administration/management and researchers, but others with an interest in reindeer husbandry can participate. Translation will be provided
Fictional games as parody: Analysing the fictional game of Box Peek as parody of the animated series of transmedial gaming franchises
This paper conducts a textual analysis of the animated comedic web miniseries Box Peek, analysing it as a general parody of transmedial gaming franchises, particularly the Pokémon TV series. The show features the fictional game of Box Peek, which is used as a device to not only provide drama and motivation for the show’s characters, but also to parody the games and associated conceits that are central to these franchises, often for the sake of humour. This discussion makes use of theories of fiction and parody, cultural analyses of Pokémon and children’s media, as well as Box Peek’s creator’s own commentary to understand how fictional[ised] games create meaning for an audience. It concludes having discussed two major threads of analysis. The first concerning the rules of the game, which implies questions of strategy and technology, which eventually concerns fictional world-building, exploiting the fictional and ludic inconsistencies that exist in transmedial game franchises for humour. The second is the way in which Box Peek, after formally parodying shows like Pokémon, then extends this parody by answering the questions it raises. In so doing it is argued that Box Peek is simultaneously imitating the childlike tone of Pokémon before progressing to a more reflective, adult perspective on the enjoyment of these series by the audience themselves. This leads the (presumed millennial) audience to a retrospective self-assessment of how, now in adulthood, they regard transmedial gaming franchises of their childhood in the late 1990s and early 2000s
Nordland
Remembering ČSV – Saami nationalists or Saami political entrepreneurs
ČSV lea beaggán sámepolitihkas fargga moadde buolvva. Dá lea vuosttaš muitalus dan birra mot ČSV ilbmadii ja mot dat geasuhišgođii earenoamážit servodatberošteaddji oasi 1970-logu sámi nuorragearddis. Dát golbma bustáva ovddiduvvoje sámepolitihkalaš doaban álggos leaikkastallamiin. Das maŋŋel ČSV-doaba ahtanušai ja doaibmagođii lihkadussan mii geasuhii sámenuoraid oktasaš doaimmaide nanusmahttit sámevuođa. Dán artihkkalis guorahalan ČSV sámepolitihkalaš ja ‑kultuvrralaš lihkadussan. Das lei iežas doaibmavuogádat gaskadásis. Dutkandieđuid lean háhkan čállagiin ja olbmuid jearahallamiin. Mus leat alddan dieđut dan áiggi sámelihkadusa nuorragearddi doaimmain. Dat leat veahkehan doarjjan dan barggu álggaheamis.ČSV was a renowned idea in the Saami politics of the early 1970s, and soon became a set phrase, a movement. It began to attract Saami from the younger generation, who showed a keen interest in Saami affairs. I have looked into how and when the ČSV appeared. The main objective of my research is to find out how it became a slogan and what effect it had. The aim of my article is to compile information and knowledge on a central phenomenon in the Saami’s cultural and political struggle of the time. My theoretical base for understanding movements of this kind is collective action, acquisition by the participants of a common identity. I conduct qualitative research by collecting information both from written sources and interviews. Informants are chosen strategically.
ČSV appeared in the autumn of 1970, during the course of a Saami-political event in Máze, Norway, and the notion existed as a Saami-political slogan for some years thereafter. In the autumn of 1972, it also became linked to Saami literature, and from then on, ČSV continued as a two-pronged movement. It attracted the young, interested in Saami politics as well as artists and persons engaged in Saami culture, functioning as a process of awakening and of the formation of a common identity.
ČSV was an active, independent and self-determining body of Saami civil society between Saami organizations and institutions. ČSV established a dialogue between those on the i-net, making discussion of Saami affairs accessible. Though the ČSV had been born in the North-Saami regions, the movement also spread to Saami areas in the east and the south.
ČSV enhanced «Saaminess» in the public sphere, in meetings, conferences, festivals and newspaper articles. However, the mutuality of collective action within the Saami nation has not been maintained at the level it attained during the 1970s, and nation-building has, therefore, also come to standstill. Those developments have, in the new millennium, been replaced by discussion of the Saami parliaments, the authorities and of Acts and statutes. The new reality of Saami political life created by ČSV ought to be an appropriate subject for Saami research
Of young birch – duodji research and artistic work in a phenomenological perspective

The artistic part of the project forms part of the empirical data in this article.
Production of knowledge is a crucial aspect of the discussion on a starting point for the development of indigenous methodologies. This article deals with the possible approaches to an artistic investment within duodji (Sámi arts and crafts). At the development stage, I started with the idea of using young birch trees in a design process. I examine this process employing a phenomenological approach which proves useful when discussing the Sámi and the indigenous perspective.
The challenge that researchers face is to consider that elements of the empirical material form part of the overall research material. Locations, materials and experiences are all crucial to the artistic result, which is often different from the initial idea.
The research deals with the question of how the creative process and the artist’s experiences meet and what this meeting leads to in terms of artistic outcome. Just like other research in artistic work, with emphasis on artistic activity and theoretical analysis, research on duodji can be a challenge, as researcher and practitioner are one and the same person. Research that includes artistic activity describes the researcher’s experience and understanding from first person point of view, and as such, the phenomenological approach provides a good basis.
When elaborating on the world of life and bodily experience, my basis is Merleau-Ponty’s interpretation of bodily phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty 1994, 2012 (1962)). This I transfer to my own creative experience

Description: The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-5 (HSCL-5) is a brief measurement tool for psychological distress. HSCL-5 consists of five items addressing the respondent’s symptoms of anxiety and depression over the past two weeks. The instrument was developed by Tambs and Moum as a short version of HSCL-25. Originally, HSCL-5 was developed to assess symptoms in adults for research purposes, but it has also been used in studies on adolescents. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize findings from studies that have examined the psychometric properties of HSCL-5 when administered to children and adolescents.
A Literature search: A systematic literature search resulted in the inclusion of 26 scientific articles and one master’s thesis (from n = 8 unique data sources). All of these studies were based on Norwegian samples, with a predominant majority from the Ung-HUNT surveys of adolescents aged 13–19 years. No Swedish or Danish publications met the inclusion criteria.
Psychometrics: The findings show that HSCL-5 demonstrates sufficient to good internal consistency (Cronbach\u27s alpha values ranging from 0.79 to 0.84) in Norwegian adolescents and young adults. Several studies report mean scores and standard deviations for a general adolescent population and certain subgroups. The construct validity of the tool is insufficiently documented, and its criterion validity has only been examined in a student population.
Conclusion: In adolescent samples, the Norwegian version of HSCL-5 demonstrates sufficient to good internal consistency and appears to differentiate between groups expected to exhibit varying levels of psychological distress. However, the instrument’s construct validity, including its factor structure, convergent and criterion validity, as well as its measurement invariance across subgroups such as gender and age, has not been documented for children and adolescents. Overall, the review concludes that there is limited information on the psychometric properties of HSCL-5 when administered to adolescents and no available evidence regarding its properties when used with children.
I sitt siste verk, The Life of the Mind, hevder Hannah Arendt at Augustin må regnes som «the first philosopher of free will». In her latest work, The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt claims that Augustine must be considered “the first philosopher of free will”. In my doctoral dissertation, I argued that Arendt was largely right in her claim, although there are also, as Michael Frede has demonstrated, traces of a conception of free will in Epictetus. In this article, however, I argue that Arendt’s claim is wrong, as we already find a concept of free will in Clemens of Alexandria. Clemens uses Aristotle\u27s term “prohairesis” in a non-Aristotelian way, which lays the foundation for the first conception of free will in the history of philosophy; where Aristotle advocates that the “weak character”, who is characterized by acting in line with desire and against reason, also acts against the decision (prohairesis), Clemens rather takes as a starting point that such a choice is precisely made by the decision (prohairesis). Given that this interpretation is correct and right to describe the Athens-born Clemens of Alexandria as a non-Western philosopher, we must therefore leave the history of Western philosophy behind to find the origin of one of history’s most important and most debated concepts, namely “free will”.DETTE FELTET FUNGERER IKKEDETTE FELTET FUNGERER IKK
50 years of Russian studies in Tromsø
In the fall semester of 1974, Associate Professor Ingvild Broch received the first four students of Russian at the University of Tromsø. In November 2024, we celebrated the first half century of Russian studies at our university, which is now known as UiT The Arctic University of Norway. In this article, I provide a brief historical sketch and a report from the anniversary seminar
