The Biogeography of Soil Bacteria in Australia Exhibits Greater Resistance to Climate Change Than Fungi

    No full text
Soil microorganisms are crucial to ecosystem health, and their composition and distribution are shaped by a range of environmental factors. However, the effects of accelerating climate change on soil microbiomes remain under-explored. This study examines the continental-scale factors controlling soil microbiomes and evaluates their responses to climate change. We applied machine learning algorithms to analyze the distribution patterns of bacteria and fungi in 1300 Australian topsoil samples. Our results indicate that bacterial distributions align closely with the soil class map, highlighting the dominant impact of soil properties. In contrast, fungal distributions are more strongly associated with temperature gradients, emphasizing the critical role of climate. Climate projections for 2040 suggest a notable southward shift in both bacterial and fungal patterns, particularly around latitude 25° S. Moreover, our findings suggest that fungal biogeography is likely to undergo more pronounced changes, with approximately 24% of Australian topsoils expected to experience significant shifts in fungal community structure, compared to about 19% for bacteria, which appear more resistant. This study emphasizes the diverse vulnerabilities of soil microbial communities and stresses the need to account for microbial dynamics in future land use and management practices.Funding: This work was supported by Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (4-H4T0RYS). Robust Nonlinear Control of an Inverter Connected to a Weak Grid

    No full text
In this article, a nonlinear strategy based on a flatness approach is used for controlling the instantaneous complex power supplied from the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) to a weak grid. To this end, the strategy introduced by the authors in [1] considering a strong grid is robustified for avoiding system instability when the converter is connected to an unknown grid. The robustification method consists of including a filter that estimates the PCC voltage and using it to build the controller (i.e., the measured PCC voltage used to design the control strategy for a strong grid is replaced by the PCC voltage estimated with the filter). In addition, before designing the controller, the steady-state stability and safe operation limits when injecting complex instantaneous power to a grid of unknown impedance are analyzed. This analysis is independent of the control strategy, and applies to all power injection schemes. Simulations are presented for showing the performance of the proposed controller in presence of a weak grid.Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (project code PID2020-115484RA-I00), Basque Government (research grant IT1644-22

Revisiting the influence of phonological similarity on cognate processing: Evidence from Cantonese–Japanese bilinguals

    No full text
Published online 15 March 2025The influences of shared orthography, semantics, and phonology on bilingual cognate processing have been investigated extensively. However, mixed results have been found regarding the effects of phonological similarity on L2 cognate processing. In addition, most existing studies examining the influence of phonological similarity on cognate processing have been conducted on alphabetic scripts, in which phonology and orthography are always associated. Hence, in this study, we recruited Cantonese–Japanese bilinguals who used two logographic scripts, traditional Chinese and Japanese Kanji, to examine the influence of phonological similarity on L2 cognate lexical decision. Importantly, these scripts allow the manipulation of phonological similarity using identical characters across both languages. In addition, we examined how word frequency and L2 proficiency modulate cognate processing. Results showed that although word frequency and L2 proficiency played important roles in cognate processing, there was minimal overall influence of phonological similarity on cognate lexical decision. The latter finding suggests that theoretical models of bilingual word recognition may need to be refined to enhance our understanding of cognate processing regarding the role of phonology among diverse bilingual populations. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by the General Research Fund (grant number 14617721) from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Research Grants Council and the Start-up Fund from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (grant number 4930965) to Tomohiro Inoue

Learning Spanish (L3) and Forgetting English (L2)? Intervention of Cognates Teaching in Lexical Production in China: A Longitudinal Comparative Study

    No full text
Published on 28th August, 2025.This article was based on a 14-week longitudinal study to analyze the role of bilingual (English-Span-ish) cognates in learning Spanish as a third language (L3) in China. Using lexical production tasks, examined learners’ cognate awareness, strategies, and recognition under cross-linguistic influence. The results show that explicit instruction of L2-L3 cognates significantly enhanced cognate awareness, reinforcing metalinguistic skills at morphological and semantic levels. The findings also reveal a motivational dimension, as learners intentionally applied cognate strategies in multilingual lexical production

Magneto-mechanical behavior in polyurethane foams containing oriented FeCo microparticles: A competition between bending and stretching effects

    No full text
Soft magneto-active composites are of particular interest in areas of biomedical applications, wearable sensors and soft robotic. In this context, this work presents a deep study of how the incorporation of Fe₇₀Co₃₀ microparticles into foam polyurethane composites affects its magnetostrictive response. The composites were fabricated in both foam and foam film-like structures, resulting from free or confined expansion, respectively, and with varying percentages and orientations of magnetic microparticles. All of the fabricated foams have been optically, magnetically, mechanically and thermally characterized. The inclusion of magnetic microparticles had negligible impact on thermal stability and degradation behavior. In contrast, mechanical and magnetic properties were highly sensitive to both the concentration and alignment of the particles. Magnetostriction behavior revealed a competition between bending and stretching mechanisms, governed by the composite’s stiffness. At lower particle contents (≤40 wt%), bending dominated, producing negative magnetostriction values. As particle content increased (>40 wt%), the material stiffened, suppressing bending and allowing stretching to prevail, resulting in positive magnetostriction, particularly evident in foam-film composites. These findings demonstrate the tunability of the magnetic response in soft composites through structural and compositional control.Research Teams projects (IT1756–22 and IT1479–22) and Elkartek Program (MMASINT KK-2023/00041). No full text
