The August 2011 riots: Them and us
The riots of 2011 shocked and enthralled the nation. The extreme levels of anger, violence and lawlessness aroused fear and unease about what seemed to be a moral if not social collapse and challenged traditional notions about England and the kind of place it is assumed to be. The Prime Minister David Cameron’s view was that ‘There are pockets of our society that are not only broken, but frankly sick’, but exactly what sickness did the Prime Minister think that the rioters were suffering from? This paper argues that to understand the riots requires as much of an examination of the non-rioters (us) as those who rioted (them). I put forward the idea that the riots were a manifestation of a deep malaise, not only in ‘them’ – the rioters – but within ‘all of us’
Fattori emotive nella percezione sensoriale in bambini dello spettro autistic [Emotional factors in sensory perception in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder]
Patients and carers experience of living with a complex neurological and palliative diagnosis
Background: A growing body of literature suggests that living with a complex, rare and/or progressive neurological condition can have significant impact on a patient and families/carer psychological and emotional well-being. Leventhal’s Self Regulation theory will underpin understanding of the coping strategies adopted. Leventhal and proponents of this theory suggest that we are active participants in our health care. Therefore, if we are able to recognise patients’ illness representations, we can better coordinate care to suit those who receive it. Bowen’s Family Systems Theory will be referenced when discussing the experience of the patients’ nominated family member. Methods: Secondary data were used from the analysis of the service evaluation study of the ‘My Needs Now’ project hosted by Hertfordshire Community Healthcare Trust. Findings: A number of themes emerged namely, Professional Knowledge and Understanding, Time and Progression, The Family, and Coping Strategies. It is apparent that health professionals need to develop their specific knowledge about complex, neurological and palliative diagnoses and engage with patients and carers as individual cases distributing knowledge appropriately. Whilst patients and carers must adopt a range of coping strategies allowing them to both reactively and proactively engage with support over the course of the disease
Consultations in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
In the course of addressing the challenges of conducting assessment consultations in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, this book engages with many technical as well as theoretical issues. It includes chapters on the history of psychoanalytic approaches to assessing patients, assessments within a public health setting, the process of psychotherapeutic engagement, the special cases of trauma and serious disturbance, and research that may inform approaches to consultation – all with a firm grounding in clinical practice
Witnessing suicide-related behavior in prison: A qualitative study of young male prisoners in England
Background: Rates of suicide and suicide-related behavior (SRB) are high in prison. Those witnessing such behavior may develop psychological morbidity. Most previous studies have been quantitative. Little has been written about the witnesses’ qualitative experience. Aims: The aim of the study was to explore, through interview and then thematic analysis, the core concerns of those witnessing another’s SRB in prison. Method: We interviewed 70 detained young men about their experience of another’s SRB in prison. Results: Three main themes were identified: their experience of another’s SRB; their thoughts of why the victim died by/attempted suicide; and the physical, emotional, and cognitive effects of another’s SRB on them. Responses to questions about the witnesses’ experience of support from others, unmet needs, and peers’ responses are also described. Two categories within the theme ”thoughts of why the victim died by/attempted suicide” were associated with being in prison, all others could be experienced in the community. Over half of the sample reported negative reactions to witnessing another’s SRB. Conclusion: Most themes were unrelated to prison. Though many reported negative reactions to their experience, suggesting a need for support, many denied that need. The implication of this study is that prison discipline and health-care staff need to consider how to provide needed support and care in an acceptable form to young men in prison
Addictive States of mind
'Perversion is taken to mean different things within psychoanalytic discourse. In this book the authors view perversions, not in terms of specific behaviours, but as a type of blueprint for object relations. While perversions may involve a quest for excitement through sex, drugs or gambling, for example, the focus here is on the underlying incapacity - or indeed at times refusal - to relate to the other as separate from the self and not as a narcissistic appendage. It is the anxieties aroused by intimacy and relatedness that drive the pursuit of ecstasy and excitement. Psychoanalytic thinking can help multidisciplinary teams to stand back and respond to the addictive state of mind in humane and containing ways that are not collusive. This book thus provides rich food for thought not only for the individual practitioner but also for those responsible for shaping services for addicted individuals.' - Alessandra Lemma, from the Preface
Reconsidering adolescent subjectivity: A ‘practice-near’ approach to the study of adolescents, including those with severe learning disabilities
This article aims to explore new approaches to working with young people that are relevant to changed techno-social contexts. First, an emerging theory of adolescent development is elaborated, based on the notion of subjectivation, which takes into account new contexts and thinking about the development and experiences of young people and which is oriented towards inclusive practice. Second, appropriate practice-near methods for exploring and empirically assessing the applicability of this approach are discussed and applied through two examples: the first, more briefly discussed, is an example from social work practice with young people in a mental health setting, while the second example, based on an observational study, focuses on the relational and emotional aspects of development of severely learning-disabled young adolescents. The article concludes that the delineation of four distinct fields of subjectivation facilitates emotionally and relationally sensitive and relevant practice with young people
