Undergraduate Researchers Advocate for the Future of Research 
on Capitol Hill 
Three Pacific undergraduate students, Elizabeth Monterroso ‘25, Jessica Lacap ‘25 and 
Karen Nateras Perez ‘25, directed by their Pacific mentor, Professor of Communication, 
Qingwen Dong, were part of the Scholars Transforming Through Research (STR) 
Program, a competitive initiative sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research 
(CUR). Over the course of five months, they participated in online seminars, honed their 
communication and advocacy skills, and learned how to translate their research into 
policy discussions. Their journey culminated in a two-day trip (March 2-3) to Capitol 
Hill, where they stepped into the offices of U.S. senators and representatives and met 
with policymakers to emphasize the importance of federal support for undergraduate 
research. 
 
What’s My Research? 
Please join us on Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 12pm-1pm in the Yosemite 
Classroom (first floor of the Library), for a special edition of What’s My Research where 
Mike Wurtz, Head of Special Collections, Library Administration, will be leading a 
poster presentation tips and pointers session.  
 
Do you want to create an engaging poster for your next poster session? In this session, 
you will review content, design, and tools that will focus on research rather than your 
poster. There will be space to share ideas too! 
  
A light lunch will be served.  
Research and Creativity Showcase 
Please join us on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 10am-1pm in the DeRosa University 
Center, for our annual celebration of research, scholarship, and creative/artistic 
endeavors. Presentations are from 10am-12pm, with an informal networking reception 
to follow directly after. We will celebrate outstanding research, scholarship, and creative 
work by students and faculty. Food will be served throughout the event.  
 
Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to present at 
the Showcase and can submit abstracts here. Abstracts are due by Friday, April 4, 
2025 at 11:59pm.  
 
Poster Session Tips 2025 
Mike Wurtz, Head of Special Collections in the William Knox Holt Memorial Library 
and Learning Center will be hosting a poster session to help prepare students, faculty, 
and staff for upcoming poster presentations. Come learn some tips to create an engaging 
poster for your next poster session. You will get to review content, design, and tools to 
capture and engage your audience.  
 
The session will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2025, from 12:15pm – 12:45pm in 
the Yosemite Room in the library.

Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award. Do you know a faculty 
member that is an outstanding research mentor? Nominate them! Deadline is 
Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11:59pm.  
 
Funding Opportunities 
The National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) Awards for Faculty at 
Hispanic-Serving Institutions program strengthens the humanities at Hispanic-Serving 
Institutions (HSIs) by encouraging and expanding humanities research opportunities 
for individual faculty and staff members. Awards provide the individual recipient with 
time to write, conduct research, and pursue other project-related activities. 
 
The due date is Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Maximum award amount is $5,000 per 
month for two to twelve months, full-time equivalent.

The National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) State and Impact of the 
Humanities program aims to expand our understanding of the role that the humanities 
play in private, public, and scholarly life by supporting data-grounded research studies 
that investigate the state, impact, and value of the humanities in the United States. This 
program will fund research that helps us better understand how and why the humanities 
matter, and how we can build a stronger, more impactful humanities.  
 
The due date is Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Awards range from up to $75,000 to 
$150,000.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Launching Early-Career Academic 
Pathways in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Supports the research in 
mathematical and physical sciences of pre-tenure faculty at institutions with historically 
lower levels of NSF funding and their efforts to prepare students for 21st century STEM 
workforce. 
 
The due date is Thursday, April 17, 2025. Awards are for 24 months with budgets of 
up to $250,000 total costs (direct plus indirect).

The National Institute of Health (NIH) Small Grants for New Investigators to 
Broaden Participation in Health-Related Research (R21) provides support for new 
investigators from diverse backgrounds, including from groups nationally 
underrepresented in biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences research, to 
conduct small research projects within the scientific mission areas of the National 
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), or the National 
Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), or the National Institute of Biomedical 
Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). This funding opportunity will support small 
research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources 
and seeks to facilitate the transition of new and early-stage investigators to research 
independence.  
 
The next due date is Monday, June 16, 2025. Direct costs are limited to $125,000 per 
year up to three years.

        Mother and Woman, 
        you can’t pick or choose. 
        It comes in the package, 
        a name of endearment for you. 
        Dear mother, 
        she attends to everyone 
        giving her all 
        leaving nothing within her when 
        the day is done. 
        Dear mother, 
        oh noble mother, 
        she puts herself last 
        with no ulterior motive, 
        making the ultimate sacrifice, 
        upholding the call of her destiny 
        and bringing fulfillment to her life. 
        Dear woman, 
        oh blessed woman, 
        her resilience is remarkable 
        she does not faint in times of 
        adversity but presses on towards 
        her goal. 
        Dear woman, 
        oh humble woman,
        how pride fears her. 
        For she knows her true worth
        lies with 
        grace and humility, and in it she finds
