Please join us on Thursday, February 20th, from noon to 1 pm in the Yosemite Classroom (1st floor of the Library) for “What’s My Research?” featuring Dr. Fernanda Oda (Psychology) and Dr. Marcos Gridi-Papp (Biological Sciences).
Dr. Oda’s research centers on studying human behavior, social and biased behavior to promote social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Dr. Gridi-Papp will present on the exploration of novel physiological mechanisms using nature as reference. He will discuss undergraduate research and the significance of a finding, by his students, that the mating calls of a male frog can induce egg laying in isolated females

Research and Creativity Showcase 
 
Please join us on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 10am-1pm in the DeRosa University Center, for our annual 
celebration of research, scholarship, and creative/artistic endeavors. Presentations are from 10am-
12pm, with an informal networking reception to follow directly after. Food will be served throughout 
the event.  
 
With over 100 presentations scheduled, it is sure to be an exciting event. Come support your fellow 
colleagues, students, and the greater Pacific community!  
 
  
Faculty Highlight 
 
 
Congratulations to Mehdi Khazaeli, Shelly Gulati, and Sebastian Dziallas (School of Engineering and 
Computer Science) for being awarded $795,731 from the National Science Foundation S-STEM grant 
program for a project titled, "Cultivating Success: Career Development and Student Retention through 
Scholarships and Academic–Industry Partnerships" at this fraught time for grants. This grant will provide 
scholarships to ten first-year students and is designed to increase the number of low-income, 
academically talented students graduating in Civil Engineering and Engineering Management—fields 
that are critical to meeting both national and regional workforce needs. 
 
 
National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 
 
 
The Office of Undergraduate Research supported 23 students to participate in the National Conference 
on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Pittsburgh, PA in April.   
 
Pacific students from across disciplines presented their work as posters, oral presentations, short film, 
or visual arts.  Sophia McRae earned third place for her collection of paintings, “How Tragedy Rewrites 
Our Minds.”

• Tara Fresques (Biological Sciences), for a project titled, “Determining molecular mechanisms of

• Dina Moussa (Endodontics), for a project titled, “Antimicrobial Peptide-Based Dual Defense

• Patrick Langham (Performance Studies), for a project titled, “Patrick Langham Jazz Recording 
Session.” 
• Vu Nguyen (Music Performance), for a project titled, “Viet Cuong's Autumn Triptych Song Cycle 
for Soprano and Chamber Wind Ensemble.” 
• Georgios Pantouris (Chemistry), for a project titled, “Study of a Therapeutic Peptide in Lung 
Cancer.” 
 
Eberhardt Research Fellowship 
 
• Karan Odom (Biological Sciences), for a project titled, “Using Female Birdsong to Elucidate 
Nutrigenomic Pathways of Seasonal Behavior.” 
 
  
Funding Opportunities 
 
The National Institute of Health (NIH) Small Grants for New Investigators to Broaden Participation in 
Health-Related Research (R21) provides support for new investigators from diverse backgrounds, 
including from groups nationally underrepresented in biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences 
research, to conduct small research projects within the scientific mission areas of the National Institute 
of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), or the National Human Genome Research 
Institute (NHGRI), or the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). This 
funding opportunity will support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time 
with limited resources and seeks to facilitate the transition of new and early-stage investigators to 
research independence.  
 
The next due date is Monday, June 16, 2025. Direct costs are limited to $125,000 per year up to three 
years.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Future Manufacturing program support fundamental research, 
education, and training of a future workforce to overcome scientific, technological, educational, 
economic, and social barriers in order to catalyze new manufacturing capabilities that do not exist 
today. Future Manufacturing seeks inventive approaches to invigorate the manufacturing ecosystem 
and seed nascent future industries that can only be imagined today. Future Manufacturing supports 
research and education that will enhance U.S. leadership in manufacturing by providing new capabilities 
for companies and entrepreneurs, by improving our health, quality of life, and national security, by 
expanding job opportunities to a diverse STEM workforce, and by reducing adverse impacts of 
manufacturing on the environment. 
The deadline is Wednesday, June 18, 2025. Award amounts vary.

interdisciplinary research and education to develop a secure, resilient and trustworthy global cyber

cybersecurity workforce.

I had my first taste of soju on Saturday.
You always said it tastes like a hospital,
Or the tile floor of that one girl’s dorm.
Maybe it would have if I’d tried it back then.
You used to tell me about your best friend.
You’d fall asleep in her arms, and tell her you love her.
People like that could be friends, not “just friends”.
You told them we were friends and they didn’t believe you.
Sunday dinners until the stars came out,
And you’d tell me how happy you are that we met.
Last year I met a girl that’s the same as me.
We fall asleep on each others shoulders, her jacket smells of weed and the 5am dew.
And I look into her eyes and I know what you say is true.
Friends are more than just friends, and we’re both still afraid to lose it all.
But soju doesn’t taste like hospital, and you’ll be gone in the fall.
I’ve lost you like I’ve forgotten the way a drink’s supposed to burn.
You knew me before I had a reason to believe you, before I met her.
If all things fade and fall, I worry to lose her the way I’ve lost you.

Inheritance
HABIN HWANG
I was born into a language I cannot  
fully hold,
each syllable slipping through my teeth
like sand through cupped hands.
My name—
a sound my tongue still shapes but  
never owns,
waited in my teacher’s mouth like  
a question
until I said it for her.
Still, I wore it.
Still, I answered for it.
My mother’s voice was a thread,
tying me to a history I could never touch.
She read me stories
of a stolen tongue,
names erased like shadows at dusk,
how voices folded under the weight  
of silence.
Crimson ran through the streets
of a nation that refused to kneel down.
Every tale was a seed she planted,
a way to tether me to a past I hadn’t lived.
Be proud, she said.
Be proud of what we’ve made from so little.
I listened,
but the stories never fit my life.
I carried them anyway,
the seed pressed into my palm,
its roots waiting beneath the surface.
Here, in this country,
life was easy,
a soft tune hummed beneath 
fluorescent lights.
My worries—grades, friendships,
the right shade of lip gloss—
All trivial matters compared to 
Korean history,
could render the seed in my palm
stagnate, dormant, unfulfilled.
My guilt rises—
a tide that swallows the shore.
Who am I to feel the weight of history
 and identity
when my life was made of ease?
When my struggles are paved
in fluorescent streets, not smoke, blood, 
or dust.
How can I claim what doesn’t  
seem mine?
I tell myself I am Korean enough.
That the roots I cannot name still  
hold me,
even if they’re buried deep beneath 
asphalt.
I tell myself I look Korean enough.
But the mirror—
silent, unyielding—
says nothing back.
There’s a story I carry:
of voices drowned in a sea of silence,
of faces blurred in crowded streets
and women who whispered under 
foreign hands.
It is not my experience
but it is my inheritance,
the seed pressed into my palm.
Here, in this quiet life,
I water it with what I’ve been given—
a name, a history,
roots that reach deeper than I’ll ever see.
I let it bloom in its own time
and call it a garden.

We went to the lake again.
growing older each year, the drive  
gets easier -
We can see above the car windows now.
There’s this rock in the river,
once a boulder with a waterfall.
We’d slide down when the cold plunge 
was just a playful punch from a friend.
So many memories rely on height:
height of our heads and of the world,
as we become the tall things we  
once conquered.
The lake water starts to rise
like the drinks in our glasses,
as the towers of rocks and innocence 
are worn, some shrink and some fall.
So drink up,
empty your glasses of cold punches 
soaked with real pain.
After all, to be young is to be empty  
of things.
If we take in enough of it,
maybe the water will recede
so the slide seems as tall as it used to be.
