(Critical) Hope as an Arrow: A Mixed Methods Study on Student-to-School Counseling Ratios and Student Outcomes in High-Poverty School Districts
No full textSchool counselors serve on the front line of student support in K–12 schools, yet resource inequities persist with uneven access to school counselors. Extant literature shows that role ambiguity, limited program evaluation, and uneven policy guidance constrain comprehensive school counseling programs. These factors contribute to persistently high student-to-counselor ratios. Under California’s LCFF, school districts must justify investments through demonstrated impact on student outcomes, raising critical questions about how counseling services are understood and leveraged—particularly in high-poverty communities. Guided by the Critical Hope in Praxis Conceptual Framework, this sequential explanatory mixed methods study examines the relationship between student-to-counselor ratios and student achievement. Mini case studies, informed by LCAP analyses and key informant interviews, illuminate how counseling services are articulated and which contextual features support stronger outcomes. Findings underscore the need to strengthen evidence-based practice, advocacy, and policy engagement to better position school counselors within state accountability systems
Aspiration to Achievement: A Mixed Methods Study of Post-Secondary Access for First-Generation College Students
No full textThis mixed-methods study examines the effectiveness of Destination Diploma, a community-based postsecondary access program supporting first-generation college students (FGCS). Grounded in Social Capital Theory, it explores how structured support systems—mentorship, academic coaching, and financial aid navigation- enhance college readiness, enrollment, and persistence among underrepresented students. Quantitative data from 2014–2024 assessed placement and completion outcomes, while qualitative interviews with former participants revealed lived experiences and perceived program impact. Findings demonstrate that Destination Diploma reduces barriers related to preparedness and social capital, offering a replicable model for institutions and nonprofits committed to educational equity and improved postsecondary attainment for FGCS
