The Cultural Beliefs, Values, Social Support and Health Perspectives of Black Women and Men: Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
Background: Research on postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression often adopts a gender-exclusive, binary framework, focusing on women and overlooking diverse racial and cultural perspectives. A decade of studies on men's experiences with postpartum anxiety and depression centers on white men, while research on Black men's postpartum mental health remains scarce. Similarly, despite well-documented inequities in care, Black mothers face a higher risk of developing postpartum depression compared to other racial groups, highlighting the need to address these disparities and the unique racial, cultural, and social factors affecting their mental health.
Objective: This qualitative study addresses these gaps by exploring the cultural beliefs, values, health perspectives, and perceived social support related to postpartum anxiety and depression among Black men and women.
Methods: 33 qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually. Participants were eligible if they self-identified as men or women, were Black parents with rights to one child and were present at their child's birth in Canada within 2019 - 2025. Participants were recruited via reverse snowball sampling. Interviews were coded inductively for relevant patterns. Data analysis was guided by Critical Race Theory and Black Feminist Theory, displaying the interplay of race, culture, and gender in postpartum.
Results: The themes for men (n=20) were: (1) the quiet struggle of fatherhood; (2) the weight of strength; (3) inclusive care for fathers; (4) balancing support and self-care, and (5) cultural perspectives on mental health. The themes for women (n=13) were: (1) a healing love: support and spirituality; (2) barriers to mental health care; (3) beyond the baby blues; (4) cultural tensions in postpartum health, and (5) relational shifts: before and after birth.
Conclusion: These findings highlight the need for culturally tailored resources to support Black parents, offering a foundation for future research and interventions to enhance equitable postpartum mental health support. --
Contexte : La recherche sur l'anxiété du post-partum et la dépression du post-partum adopte souvent un cadre binaire et exclusif de genre, se concentrant sur les femmes et négligeant les diverses perspectives raciales et culturelles. Une décennie d'études sur les expériences des hommes en matière d'anxiété et de dépression post-partum se concentre sur les hommes blancs, tandis que les recherches sur la santé mentale post-partum des hommes noirs restent rares. De même, malgré des inégalités bien documentées en matière de soins, les mères noires courent un risque plus élevé de développer une dépression du post-partum que les autres groupes raciaux, ce qui souligne la nécessité de s'attaquer à ces disparités et aux facteurs raciaux, culturels et sociaux uniques qui affectent leur santé mentale.
Objectif : Cette étude qualitative vise à combler ces lacunes en explorant les croyances culturelles, les valeurs, les perspectives en matière de santé et le soutien social perçu en rapport avec l'anxiété du post-partum et la dépression du post-partum chez les hommes et les femmes de race noire.
Méthodes : 33 entretiens qualitatifs semi-structurés ont été menés virtuellement. Résultats : Les thèmes abordés par les hommes (n=20) étaient les suivants : (1) la lutte silencieuse de la paternité ; (2) le poids de la force ; (3) les soins inclusifs pour les pères ; (4) l'équilibre entre le soutien et les soins personnels, et (5) les perspectives culturelles sur la santé mentale. Les thèmes abordés par les femmes (n=13) sont les suivants : (1) un amour qui guérit : soutien et spiritualité ; (2) les obstacles aux soins de santé mentale ; (3) au-delà du baby blues ; (4) les tensions culturelles dans la santé post-partum, et (5) les changements relationnels : avant et après la naissance.
Conclusion : Ces résultats soulignent le besoin de ressources culturellement adaptées pour soutenir les parents noirs, offrant une base pour la recherche et les interventions futures afin d'améliorer le soutien équitable à la santé mentale post-partum
An Emperor's Anger: Political Sentiment and Document Structure in Late Roman Law, an Analysis and TEI-XML Digital Edition of the Novellae Valentiniani
This dissertation utilizes a variety of theoretical and digital methods to argue that the Late Roman emperor Valentinian III (ruling as augustus from 425 to 455 CE), often regarded as a reason for the fall of the western Roman Empire, was not incompetent and overly emotional when it came to issuing laws. Instead, he was operating within an acceptable range of behavior when compared to other emperors, given the limited options he possessed for resolving problems during this age of crisis. The laws examined are the unabridged "new laws" (novellae) issued by Valentinian III and other emperors after the adoption of the fifth-century Theodosian Code as the standard legal reference for the empire, but before the creation of the sixth-century Justinian's Code.
The core of this research is to apply, by way of analogy, a "religious studies" approach to Late Roman law, where laws are forms of text within a context, and there is greater interest in analyzing the actions and behaviours that result than the logic of the laws alone. This is contrast to what I interpret as more traditional "theological" approaches, where law is a legal science and its experts actively try to discern and adhere to the internal consistency of that body of "sacred" text.
This "religious studies" approach is taken in the following ways. (1) The dissertation uses Marxian-inspired Critical Legal frameworks as a basis for re-interpreting Valentinian's laws through a political lens so that they no longer seem unsound; (2) it takes modern sentiment analysis techniques and applies them to the Latin in the post-Theodosian novellae to compare their emotional intensity and to establish which groups were politically favored or disfavored by emperors; (3) it hybridizes the sociological theories of Michael Mann and the social conflict theories of Late Roman historian Peter N. Bell to create a new understanding for the classification and imperial management of political conflict as they appear in the laws; and lastly (4) it employs eXtensible Markup Language (XML) using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) schema to assist in the creation of a new digital edition of the post-Theodosian novellae
Investigation of Morphology and Surface Chemistry of LLZO Garnet in Composite Electrolyte for Lithium Solid-State Batteries
Current liquid-based electrolytes face challenges meeting future energy storage demands due to safety issues and low volumetric energy density. Solid-state electrolytes (SSE) represent the next frontier of battery innovation, offering significant improvements in thermal and electrochemical stability while inhibiting risks such as dendrite formation and thermal runaway. Despite these advantages, SSEs show a lot of challenges hindering their widespread adoption. Garnet-type SSEs are not very robust, and polymer SSEs have low conductivity despite their good processability. Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) containing both garnet fillers and polymer are a good compromise with good mechanical and greater conductive properties. However, CSEs introduce new complications, such as filler agglomeration and poor compatibility with the polymer matrix, often due to filler surface contaminants such as lithium carbonate. This study investigates the role played by the size, morphology and quantity of lithium lanthanum zirconia oxide (Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂, LLZO) garnet-based CSEs to improve their functionality and electrochemical performance. The effects of garnet morphology, particle size, and content were explored using advanced characterization techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, DSC, as well as mechanical testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to evaluate the structural, mechanical and ionic properties of these CSE. The results demonstrate that CSEs using optimized LLZO spherical filler achieved an ionic conductivity as high as 10⁻⁵ S/cm at room temperature and 10⁻⁴ at 60 °C, which meets the minimum requirement for battery operation. SEM analysis further revealed that spherical LLZO exhibits superior dispersion over the commercial counterparts. Furthermore, this thesis investigated the modification of the surface chemistry of LLZO through acid treatment to improve its compatibility with the polymer and LiFTSI, as well as improve the ionic conductivity of the CSE. Varying types and concentrations of acidic solutions have been used to remove carbonates and hydroxides from the LLZO's surface. Surface characterization techniques, such as XRD, FTIR, Raman and XPS, were employed to evaluate the effects of the acid treatments on the garnet's crystal structure and ability to remove unwanted contaminants. Notably, acid-washing solutions proved ineffective at eliminating Li₂CO₃. However, acid-washing did show some surface removal of Li₂CO₃ and caused no damage to the cubic phase of the garnet. These findings contribute to the advancement of solid-state batteries, paving the way for safer and more efficient energy storage solutions
Blood transfusion training for prehospital providers: a scoping review
Abstract Background Blood transfusion is increasingly utilised to manage haemorrhagic shock in prehospital environments. This practice is particularly relevant in settings where delays to definitive treatment are common due to extended evacuation timelines, limited resupply, and challenging environmental conditions. Safe and effective transfusion in these contexts depends on competent, well-prepared providers. Non-physician personnel may be required to perform transfusions independently in high-stakes situations without direct physician supervision. This scoping review synthesizes current literature on blood transfusion training for prehospital providers, with a focus on instructional design, simulation modalities, knowledge retention, and outcome evaluation. Methods We conducted a scoping review following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR framework. Seven databases were systematically searched through 20 February 2025. Eligible studies described transfusion training for non-physician healthcare providers in prehospital or austere environments. Data were extracted on instructional strategies, simulation modalities, and outcome measures. Outcomes were categorised using the Kirkpatrick Model, and instructional design features mapped to simulation-based education frameworks. Results Six studies involving 475 participants were included. Participants included combat medics, paramedics, registered nurses, physician assistants, and medical students. Training was delivered across environments including simulation centres, field-based exercises, and in-theatre deployments. All studies featured face-to-face instruction and hands-on skills training. Simulation modalities included part-task trainers in four studies, high-fidelity mannequins in two, live human models in two, and real-world transfusions in one. Instructional design features such as team-based learning, repeated practice, and structured feedback were reported in most studies. Outcomes were reported across all four Kirkpatrick levels. Four studies assessed learner satisfaction and confidence (Level 1), five evaluated knowledge and procedural skill acquisition (Level 2), three assessed behavioural change in practice (Level 3), and one reported patient-level outcomes during operational missions (Level 4). None assessed long-term retention. Variability in instructional methods and limited evaluation at higher outcome levels constrained generalizability. Conclusions Blood transfusion training for prehospital providers appears feasible and associated with short-term improvements in knowledge, skills, and confidence. However, inconsistent instructional design and limited evaluation of long-term or clinical outcomes indicate important gaps. Structured, simulation-informed programs aligned with operational needs may improve training consistency and effectiveness
Advancing Hybrid Recommender Systems for E-Commerce with Knowledge-Enhanced Architecture and Adaptive User Engagement Modeling
In the era of information overload, recommender systems have emerged as pivotal tools for helping users navigate vast product catalogs in e-commerce environments. This thesis presents a novel approach to hybrid recommender systems for e-commerce platforms by combining collaborative filtering with content-based methods enhanced by knowledge graph integration. The proposed system addresses key challenges in recommendation quality, diversity, and cold-start scenarios through adaptive user engagement modeling.
The first part of this work introduces a hybrid recommender system that integrates Alternating Least Squares (ALS) collaborative filtering with a two-tower content-based filtering model for e-commerce applications. This approach leverages user-item interactions while incorporating product description features to overcome data sparsity issues commonly found in traditional recommendation approaches. The system adaptively combines predictions from both models using a weighted approach, offering improved recommendation quality and diversity.
Building upon this foundation, the second part presents KAHRec: a Knowledge-Augmented Hybrid Recommender system that enhances the initial model through three key theoretical innovations. First, the system integrates BERT-driven semantic understanding to capture contextual relationships in product descriptions and user reviews, enabling more nuanced feature representations than traditional word embeddings. Second, it constructs structured knowledge graphs from over 148,000 product relationships (also_bought, also_viewed, similar_item) and applies PageRank and degree centrality measures to quantify product importance within the recommendation ecosystem. Third, it implements stratified user engagement modeling that categorizes users into distinct interaction tiers (One/Few/Medium/Many) and applies tier-specific adaptive fusion strategies, with weights ranging from collaborative-dominant (0.75 ALS, 0.25 Two-Tower) for highly engaged users to content-dominant (0.25 ALS, 0.75 Two-Tower) for cold-start scenarios. This theoretical framework enables the system to dynamically balance matrix factorization efficiency with neural personalization based on data availability and user characteristics.
The knowledge-augmented approach incorporates synthetic item generation for cold-start mitigation that combines knowledge graph centrality with BERT feature similarity, providing comprehensive coverage across diverse user scenarios. The adaptive fusion mechanism employs consensus boosting that amplifies recommendations when both models agree, while applying strategic penalties for model disagreements, ensuring robust performance across varying data conditions.
Evaluated on a large-scale dataset containing over 400,000 user-item interactions across 30,445 products, the proposed approaches demonstrate significant improvements over baseline methods and state-of-the-art models in precision, recall, and user satisfaction metrics. The knowledge-augmented KAHRec approach achieves 6% higher precision and 17% higher recall compared to individual baselines, with a 25% relative improvement in cold-start precision scenarios. KAHRec demonstrates consistent superiority over state-of-the-art models, outperforming BERT4Rec and KGAT with 8.5% precision and 8.2% recall improvements respectively. Additional benefits include 3.6% greater recommendation diversity while maintaining robust error performance (MAE: 0.42).
The system shows particular efficacy for medium-engagement users, outperforming alternatives by more than 8% in precision metrics. By strategically balancing matrix factorization efficiency with neural personalization, this work advances adaptable recommendation frameworks for dynamic e-commerce environments requiring both accuracy and responsiveness to catalog evolution
Evaluating the Effect of Defects on CFRP-Concrete Bond Performance: Experimental and Analytical Insights
The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) as a strengthening material for concrete structures has gained popularity in recent decades due to its lightweight, high stiffness, high strength, and corrosion resistance, making it a viable alternative to conventional materials like steel plates. However, the effectiveness of this repair technique depends largely on its bond performance and interfacial quality, which ensure the structural integrity and reliability of the strengthening solution. A gap currently exists in efficiently investigating bond integrity in the presence of interfacial deteriorations and defects.
This study investigates the bond behaviour of ten high-strength concrete prisms externally strengthened with CFRP laminates under various ply and defect conditions. Single-Lap Shear Tests (SLST) and 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) analysis were employed to examine strain distribution, shear and slip behaviour, and load-slip characteristics in the presence of interfacial imperfections.
The results revealed that specimens primarily failed due to adhesive cohesive failure in a mixed-mode rupture, with stress concentrations near defects leading to localized peeling and bond deterioration. Reduced axial stiffness decreased load capacity, caused less uniform stress distribution, and promoted localized peeling, ultimately reducing system efficiency. Experimental bond-slip curves were derived for control specimens, and a unified model based on the bilinear model by Lu et al. (2005) showed strong agreement with experimental results, offering a balance of practicality and accuracy. Future work should focus on refining the calibration with specimen-specific coefficients and incorporating environmental factors to improve predictive accuracy.
Defects near the loaded end weakened stiffness locally, increasing slip around the defect region. Full-width defects showed limited capacity for stress redistribution, while middle-positioned defects caused load drops proportional to their size, potentially triggering localized debonding. Edge-aligned defects reduced load capacity by 33% compared to the control specimen and created stress concentrations on the opposite side of the bond area. Dual defects exhibited reduced initial stiffness, intermediate load drops, and potential recovery toward ultimate capacity, though not always resulting in significant strength reduction. Calibration of Li et al.'s (2023) load drop model reduced mean absolute percent error (MAPE) from 45.1% to 13.5%.
Overall, this study provides valuable insights into CFRP-concrete bond behaviour in the presence of defects and offers a solid foundation for future research and practical applications
A Regional Study on Champlain Sea Clay: Empirical Prediction of Consolidation Parameters and Statistical Characterization of Undrained Shear Strength Based on Historical Geotechnical Data
This thesis explores the geotechnical challenges associated with the performance of geo-infrastructures on Champlain Sea Clay (CSC) deposits, with a particular focus on the Ottawa Valley region of Eastern Ontario. CSCs are highly compressible sensitive marine clays, which pose serious risks both with respect to deformation as well as short-term stability behavior. Geotechnical infrastructures placed on CSC are prone to excessive settlement, differential movement, and cracking, often exceeding acceptable serviceability limits. CSCs are also sensitive in nature due to high-water content, low coefficient of permeability and pore-water salinity and typically exhibit strain-softening behavior. In many scenarios, significant post-peak shear strength loss can trigger progressive failures.
There are conventional methods and recently developed advanced techniques that can be used for reliably determining and interpreting the behavior of CSCs. For example, settlement behavior can be estimated from consolidation tests performed in the laboratory testing using high-quality undisturbed soil samples. Undrained shear strength, S_u, of clay is one of the key parameters required in the ultimate limit state (ULS) design of geotechnical structures for short-term stability analyses, which can be determined from vane shear tests (VST). In addition, VST also provides valuable information about the sensitivity of CSCs. In recent years, there have also been significant efforts to develop correlations using Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) and CPT with pore pressure measurements (CPTu) for estimating and interpreting the behavior of CSCs. However, these methods are time-consuming and expensive for extending them in low budget geotechnical projects.
During the last two decades there has been rapid urban expansion, particularly in the CSCs of Ottawa Valley region. Many new subdivisions have been developed by converting forest and agricultural lands into residential areas. As per the provincial housing mandate, Ottawa's municipal housing target, presently, is approximately 15,000 homes per year. In low-budget projects, key consolidation parameters are typically estimated using empirical correlations developed from fundamental soil index properties reported in the literature. However, these empirical relationships often lack the regional specificity associated with key factors such as stress history, pore water salinity, and soil fabric needed to reliably reflect the complex behavior of CSCs.
For this reason, the key objective of this thesis is directed towards refining existing correlations and methodologies to better suit site-specific conditions of CSCs in Ottawa Valley region. For achieving this objective, over 500 geotechnical reports, including data from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, were compiled to develop two databases: one for consolidation parameters and another for undrained shear strength, S_u.
The datasets related to consolidation and other relevant tests were statistically cleaned using interquartile range, skewness, kurtosis, and normalization techniques to remove outliers and enhance reliability. Using the cleaned data, empirical models were developed for key consolidation parameters; compression index (C_c), recompression index (C_r), overconsolidation ratio (OCR), and preconsolidation pressure (σ_P^') that are tailored for eastern and western subregions of the Ottawa Valley.
The field data from VSTs were compiled into a separate database to analyze the spatial and depth-related variability of S_u across the Ottawa Valley. The collected dataset did not provide a strong correlation between S_u and other soil properties, despite such correlations being used for other fine-grained soils in the literature. For this reason, the focus of the analysis on the S_u database was put on quantifying the Coefficient of Variation (COV) for the geotechnical variability of S_u across the Ottawa Valley region. The COV presented in this thesis provides valuable insights that can be used in probabilistic modeling and reliability-based design. In addition, sensitivity (S_t) and its relationship to other soil index properties were investigated. Strong correlations were not obtained as the investigations revealed pronounced heterogeneity due to depositional and post-depositional processes. Such trends may partly be attributed to variations in field sampling practices across the region over several decades of data collection.
The primary challenge of the research undertaken in this thesis lies in the fact that the data set was compiled by numerous operators extending different practices over a period exceeding fifty years. This introduces potential vulnerabilities in the consolidation sampling and testing process and measurement of S_u resulting in the development of unreliable correlations for future use. Nonetheless, assembling a dataset of comparable size from a single source of high quality is both expensive and a practical challenge. The approach extended in this study represents a reasonable option for addressing the challenges.
In summary, the research summarized in this thesis contributes to a statistically robust and regionally tailored framework for estimating several key geotechnical properties of CSCs, providing a practical alternative to conventional testing methods. The novelty of this study lies in compiling and analyzing a dataset specific to the Ottawa Valley region, treating it as a micro-zone within the broader CSC formation and proposing better empirical correlations for use in low budget geotechnical engineering projects
What are the primary care physicians and cardiologists talking about? a cross-sectional analysis of two telemedicine services in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Abstract Background Primary care physicians (PCPs) face challenging clinical situations. Telemedicine between PCPs and specialists involving case discussions in cardiology are frequent. Assessing these interactions is essential for identifying knowledge gaps and tailoring support. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, two new telemedicine services provide cardiology support for PCPs: one from the Municipal Health Department using WhatsApp (Meta) and one from the Brazilian Heart Insufficiency with Telemedicine (BRAHIT) research project, which uses a web-based platform. This study analysed and compared the use of these two services in terms of their frequency, distribution among city areas, and content of the PCPs’ questions and cardiologists’ answers. Methods Cross-sectional study. We described the demographic characteristics of the patients whose cases were discussed and the primary care physicians’ use frequency. We classified the reasons for encounter and discussed diagnoses using the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC-3), the question types using the Taxonomy of General Clinical Questions domains, and the specialist’s answers using an adapted version of the Champlain eConsult BASE™ research group’s classification. Results We analysed the usage data of all interactions (N = 1065) and the detailed content of a random sample (n = 346). The PCPs used the Health Department service more frequently (332/1093, 31%) than the BRAHIT project service (43/1331, 5%). The median answer time was shorter for the Health Department service (19 min) than for the BRAHIT service (two days). Most questions to the health department service were classified within the diagnosis domain, mainly regarding electrocardiography interpretation. The questions asked to the BRAHIT service were more frequently classified into treatment or management domains. The advantages and drawbacks of both models and the contributions of the findings to future implementation projects and continuing medical education opportunities are discussed. Conclusions The two types of telemedicine services were adopted differently by the PCPs, with more frequent use and focus on diagnosis in the Health Department WhatsApp (Meta)-based service, compared with less frequent use, more centred on treatment and management topics, in the BRAHIT. Further research using standardised taxonomies for content analysis is needed to inform optimal practices in telemedicine services between providers and guide future initiatives
Conducting a Program Evaluation of an OER Initiative: Benefits and Challenges
Launched in 2020, the University of Ottawa Library OER Program aimed to raise awareness among faculty members about the costs of commercial course materials to encourage them to choose free, open-access resources to lighten the financial burden on students. Given the persistent lack of French-language resources adapted to minority contexts in Canada, the program was also meant to encourage the production of OER in this language. In its final year, a program evaluation was conducted to determine if the human and financial resources invested have led to the desired immediate and intermediate outcomes and to propose improvements for other potential OER initiatives at the University. This presentation will focus on the questions, indicators, and methods used to assess this OER initiative through an adaptable utilization-focused evaluation, as well as the benefits and challenges of using a program evaluation approach to measure and communicate impact

Aristotle, Oedipus, and Greek Religion explores an important religious side of ancient Aristotelianism, one which has an impact on contemporary philosophical debates.
Louis F. Groarke shows how an exegetical perspective open to and respectful of Greek Pagan religion allows readers to discover a remarkably different Aristotle than the one to which we have grown accustomed.
To begin with, one must discover what Aristotle (and his school) taught, not by examining isolated passages, but by getting a sense of his philosophy as a whole. One has to make sense of the circumstantial evidence and carefully piece together a coherent technical case for the overall argument.
In each chapter, Groarke considers another aspect of Aristotelian thought; this is in opposition to mainstream opinion which often describes Aristotle as a secret atheist, an agnostic, or as something akin to a modern-day positivist or a reductionist.
The author goes on to show that Aristotle valued religious practice on a personal and social level, that his metaphysics are marked by intimations of the divine, that he provides an epistemological space for both science and religion, that his account of Greek tragedy has an inalienable moral and religious side, and that his account of the origins of cognition is not so far removed from religious scripture.
