Nurses' interpretation of ICU soundscape: An annotated sound level measurement at Erasmus Medical Center
Intensive care nurses are regularly exposed to loud sounds, but it is crucial to understand which sounds they consciously perceive during their shifts. This study, conducted in the Adult ICU at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, used a mixed-method approach to explore nurses’ auditory experiences. Over three weeks, the researchers continuously measured sound levels in patient rooms, nurse stations, and a corridor, focusing on morning shifts. Additionally, a context mapping study was conducted, by which nurses documented sound sources using portable audio recorders, arranged them on a timeline, and provided interpretations in semi structured interviews. The findings indicate that nurses primarily hear environmental sounds and are particularly sensitive to alarm sounds during transitions. Their interpretation of ICU sounds varies based on their tasks, with both positive and negative appraisals. This suggests that ICU environments can be optimized by organizing sound events to better align with nurses’ clinical needs. Understanding the sounds nurses consciously notice and react to can help improve working conditions and patient care. By refining acoustic environments, hospitals can reduce unnecessary noise while ensuring that critical alarms remain effective, ultimately supporting both staff efficiency and patient well-being in intensive care settings
Non-renewable energy demand reduction and positive energy buildings in Southern Europe’s urban forms
The challenge of achieving a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within a short timeframe necessitates extensive renovations of the existing building stock to meet the target of zero-emission buildings (ZEB). This study explores the feasibility of such renovations through building-plant system simulations for typical urban forms found in Southern Europe, classified using the Local Climate Zones (LCZ) method. Envelope retrofitting, combined with the use of electric heat pumps, allows for substantial reductions in energy demand while eliminating the use of fossil fuels. Renewable energy generated by rooftop photovoltaic systems can cover up to 96% of electric demand in the best case scenarios. However, results indicate that fully eliminating the need for electricity imports from the grid is unfeasible. Consequently, the more attainable goal of achieving a Positive Energy Building (PEB) status is investigated. In this context, a new definition of PEB is introduced, balancing the exported PV energy exclusively against the non-renewable portion of imported energy. Even when this PEB condition is met on an annual basis, it is not consistently sustained on a monthly level. The study concludes that achieving a monthly PEB target requires not only building-specific interventions but also an increased share of renewable energy supplied by the grid
Mnemosyne 46: The Florentine Nymph's Step
Mnemosyne is the most original legacy of Aby Warburg’s studies and represents the culmination of his research. It is an Atlas of images designed to explore the mechanisms of transmission of the tradition of images, figures and forms from antiquity to the present, with particular attention to the formal revival of models of movement, gestures, postures and iconographic schemes.
Warburg saw the figure of the arena in the large black panels on which he fixed the images in an ephemeral and always precarious syntax: a field in which linear progressions or definitive conclusions are not reconstructed, but in which the transformations, frictions and conflicts expressed by each era are made visible.
Among the Panels of Mnemosyne, Panel 46, because of its crucial theme (the Nymph) and its particular structural and formal completeness, offers a clear thread to guide us through the Atlas, a thread to confront the labyrinth of Mnemosyne.
“While it tempts you to follow her like a winged idea through all the spheres in a Platonic rapture of love, I feel compelled to turn my philological gaze toward the soil from which she arose and, marvelling, ask: is this strangely delicate plant really rooted in the arid Florentine earth?

Rank Aggregation of Fundamental Frequency Estimation Laws for Historic Towers
The estimation of the fundamental frequency in historic masonry towers remains a challenge due to uncertainties in material properties, structural configurations, and boundary conditions. Empirical formulations provided by national codes and literature are often used, in order to avoid experimental tests, which can prove costly, especially in tall towers. This study uses the concept of rank aggregation, based on the Plackett-Luce model, to enhance the prediction of fundamental frequency in bounded historic masonry towers. By integrating eight different empirical formulations based on geometric parameters, the methodology optimally combines the different laws to generate a new aggregate estimate.
This rank aggregation strategy is trained on an extensive historic tower dataset and then validated through an experimental dataset coming from a number of Italian towers. The resulting reference ranking list demonstrates the effectiveness of the Plackett-Luce model in prioritizing the most reliable formulations while minimizing variance. This study further enhances fundamental frequency estimation by fitting datasets to distributions, ensuring a robust and adaptable framework for ranking empirical formulations, which is a relevant parameter for the seismic assessment of these cultural heritage assets
