International Charters. Research and Values for Cultural Heritage

    No full text
The Università Iuav di Venezia is conducting experimental research on utilising International Charters as a tool for fostering multidisciplinary dialogue at the global level, aimed at advancing the knowledge and conservation strategies for Cultural Heritage. This investigation traces the evolution of concepts and definitions articulated in key Charters, beginning with the Athens Charter and extending to the most recent international frameworks. The study highlights the dynamic relationship between International Charters and shifting social, cultural, and economic conditions, including the impacts of war, geopolitical reconfigurations, and socio-political transformations. Notable examples such as the ICOMOS Charters of 1982 and 2000, the Dresden Declaration (ICOMOS 1982), the Riga Charter (ICOMOS 2000), the San Antonio Declaration (ICOMOS 1996), the Québec Declaration (ICOMOS 2008a), the Delhi Declaration (ICOMOS 2017), and the Nara Document (ICOMOS 1994) are examined for their evolving responses to issues like territorial boundaries, the conservation and restoration of architectural heritage, and the implications of shifting global power structures. These documents address technical conservation practices and reflect broader concerns, including the principles of interpretation and identifi- cation of cultural heritage, as seen in documents such as the Florence Declaration (ICOMOS 2014b) and the ICOMOS Charter for the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS 2008b). By analysing the evolving frameworks of the Charters, the research positions them as critical instruments for investigating the complex relationships between cultural heritage and communities. The study emphasises their role as privileged observers of the intersection between heritage preservation, global socio-political changes, and the increasing interactions between local and global contexts

DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THE OUT-OF-PLANE BEHAVIOUR OF MASONRY FAÇADES USING RIGID BEAM MODEL

    No full text
In this work, a simple and effective Rigid Beam Model originally introduced for studying the dynamic behaviour of ancient freestanding stone columns and recently extended to the case of cantilever unreinforced masonry walls subjected to out-of-plane loading, is further extended to simulate the out-of-plane behaviour of loadbearing façades. Such structural elements are characterized by the presence of at least one or two slabs and roofs, which transfer further vertical loads to the façade and represent additional masses that can be activated by ground acceleration. The proposed model assumes the wall vertically subdivided in equal portions modelled as rigid beam elements and each interface between portions is assumed as a node. Considering no sliding along the interfaces and small displacements of blocks, rocking can be simulated by a bi or tri-linear moment rotation non-linear constitutive law. Monolithic façades with different levels of additional mass on top are modelled and subjected to different in magnitude and frequency harmonic loading. From the analysis results, it is found that monolithic walls can overturn with acceleration magnitudes larger than their corresponding static load multipliers, if input frequency values increase. On the other hand, results converge to static load multipliers for decreasing input frequency values

//engl: This essay offers a reinterpretation of the altar of Donatello, designed and executed by Camillo Boito between 1893 and 1897 as part of the extensive restoration campaign for the seventh centenary of Saint Anthony. Rather than viewing it as a case of restorative reconstruction, the altar is presented as a kind of proto-museological dispositif, conceived for the viewing and public appreciation of the Florentine master’s masterpiece. This approach is rooted in the broader transformation of the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua from a place of worship to a site of culture a process initiated in the early nineteenth century through the writings and interventions of Boito’s mentor, Pietro Selvatico Estense. While Boito draws on literary and philological sources, his strategy of display privileges criteria of visibility and spatial coherence, derived primarily from direct examination of Donatello’s bronzes. In doing so, he assumes the interpretive and, to some extent, "sentimental" responsibility for shaping the new altar as an autonomous work

The redevelopment of the external paths of the Venetian Arsenal in Italy requires design responses in terms of functional performance, material compatibility with historical pre-existences, durability, and sustainability of the intervention. The site’s complex stratification, specific environmental conditions, and stringent performance requirements delineate seemingly conflicting demands to which the project must respond. The research proposes an operational methodology for evaluating intervention choices aimed at balancing them; through multidisciplinary investigations, parameters are outlined to qualify the design solutions derived from the analysis of international case studies. The evaluative model integrates conservation and innovation design strategies for historical sites through a careful site knowledge process
