Conservare la materia per preservare la memoria urbana : Le fragilità contemporanee della Trieste Liberty = Preserving material to safeguard urban memory : the contemporary fragilities of Art Nouveau in Trieste
Preserving Material to Safeguard Urban Memory The architecture inherited from the past embodies an intrinsic fragility. Human perception and the values we choose to preserve inevitably influence the conservation or loss of specific aspects of the built heritage. In Trieste, many buildings from the Liberty period have recently undergone controversial transformations. These changes are not the result of natural decay but rather human interventions that have ignored key principles of the contemporary restoration culture, prioritizing stylistic reconstruction and historical falsification over preserving the “patina of time”. This paper explores the fragility of these buildings as a value, advocating for the preservation of material as a tool to safeguard memory
The role of the social entrepreneur for sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration
Social entrepreneurs have emerged as a powerful force driving societal change in today's dynamic and interconnected world. They identify societal problems and leverage entrepreneurial principles to create, manage, and implement innovative solutions that foster social change. While the state of the art in social entrepreneurship and its effect on urban regeneration is well-documented, there remains a gap in the literature regarding the specific role of the social entrepreneur in sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration. This study aims to test the hypothesis that social entrepreneurs play a crucial role in this context . This article provides new insights into urban planning and design, highlighting the role of social entrepreneurs as drivers of sustainable urban growth in remote areas by answering the following questions: What are the characteristics of social entrepreneurs in sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration? What actions do social entrepreneurs take to achieve this transformation sustainably? What factors influence their work? What challenges do social entrepreneurs face in achieving sustainable heritage-led regeneration? This paper examines 17 European cases where social enterprises manage regenerated industrial heritage to test the research hypothesis. The study employs qualitative research methodologies, including unstructured interviews, exploratory and dialogic surveys, data analysis, and comparative analysis. The results reveal common characteristics and actions among social entrepreneurs in the selected cases. Additionally, the study identifies three main factors that influence their actions, as well as the challenges impacting their sustainable efforts. These findings contribute to the body of knowledge and open new theoretical scenarios in sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration involving social entrepreneurs. The results encourage social enterprises, policymakers, and public administrations, as they underscore the need for projects and policies that promote new careers and practices in sustainable heritage-led urban regeneration
Modern Times
Some words, much more than others, are so common in our daily use as to appear obviously clear, while instead – if considered more attentively – they reveal a multiplicity of meanings in constant
evolution and transformation.
Work, in its various connotations, has always mirrored society, and it is perhaps now as essential as ever to reflect on such a wide-ranging term, its countless definitions inspiring as many occasions for thinking
EN-Vittorio Gregotti. Architectural modification for the Bund in Shanghai
The set of projects developed between 2002 and 2004 by Vittorio Gregotti and his studio for the renewal of the Bund area in Shanghai represents an ideal new urban foundation for the preservation and revitalization of the post-colonial architectural legacy. The study of the relationships between architecture and the post-metropolis, between history and design, between processes of urban memory erasure and the permanence of the spolia of the founding city of the 19th and 20th centuries, constitute the palimpsest of a system of oriented prefigurations, declined in multiple aspects: formal, typological, thematic and scalar. The architecture of the «modification» acts through three-dimensional grids of geometric commensuration between the new interventions and the morphological characters of the urban fabric, within an organic idea of urban design based on a new set of public spaces
