Girl to Girl: Italian Girls and Girlhood Models in Serial Narratives
In the age of platformisation, digital distribution, and multiplication of audiovisual products, several TV series are distinguished by a new effort towards a diverse and nuanced representation of marginalised groups, one that includes a richer representation of girls. Given the global and disseminated nature of contemporary audiovisual industry, fictional girls and their storylines seem designed to project onto young female viewers precise imaginaries to inhabit, troubled characters to identify with, or role models to follow. Building on the evidence that these televisual trends has also affected Italian TV series, we designed a research project aimed at exploring the relationship between girls as narrative subjects in Italian serial products, and Italian girls as audiovisual media consumers. This paper aims to investigate the reception of teen dramas and girlhood representation in young female audiences, as well as the effect of such representation on their imaginary. With this purpose, we conducted five focus groups with a sample of fifty-two high school students in a mediumsized town, representative of the Italian urban landscape. We therefore examined the relationship between local and global productions with regard to girls’ representation, how it is perceived by our interviewees and what is their level of awareness as the target audience for these productions

Search for Gravitational Waves Emitted from SN 2023ixf
We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19, during the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered ∼14% of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz, where we assume the gravitational-wave emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy 1 × 10−4 M c2 and luminosity 2.6 × 10−4 M c2 s−1 for a source emitting at 82 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as 1.08, at frequencies above 1200 Hz, surpassing past results
Reichenbach's forgotten argument
Reichenbach’s importance to the development of modern philosophy can hardly be overstated. However, many themes and arguments originally developed by Reichenbach are either overlooked or not properly credited to him. In this article, we discuss an important but often forgotten argument of Reichenbach against the Kantian notion of synthetic a priori. We first give a detailed historical reconstruction of the argument and discuss the mild conventionalism that Reichenbach developed following this argument. Then, we recast this argument in the modern language of General Relativity. Molecular Fingerprints-Based Machine Learning for Metabolic Profiling
Metabolomics has emerged as a promising field in pharmaceuticals and preventive healthcare, offering practical applications in disease detection and drug testing. However, the analysis and interpretation of complex metabolic datasets remain challenging, with current methods relying heavily on limited and incompletely annotated biological pathways. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel approach that involves training machine learning classifiers on fingerprint-based encodings of metabolites to predict their response under specific experimental conditions. In this study, we evaluate our approach using a cellular model for the genetic disease Ataxia Telangiectasia (AT). Remarkably, some of our trained models predict affected metabolites with good performance, providing compelling evidence that the structural properties of metabolites hold predictive power over their response to specific conditions. Additionally, we suggest that evaluating the feature importance of the model can greatly assist researchers in identifying clusters of significant molecules and formulating hypotheses about affected pathways. Notably, our analysis of the AT cellular model identifies distinct groups of metabolites, some of which were already known to participate in the affected pathways, thereby validating existing knowledge. Moreover, we discovered metabolites not previously associated with AT, opening up novel opportunities for further exploration
An Experimental Study on the Energy Efficiency of Feature Selection for Human Activity Recognition with Wrist-worn Devices
Incorporating machine and deep learning methodologies into wearable devices has enhanced the capacity to accurately recognize human activity, thus enabling a range of applications including healthcare monitoring and fitness tracking. However, machine and deep learning can be costly in terms of the computational resources and energy consumption required. In this work, we study how a feature selection decision impacts the energy consumption of an ESP32 wearable device by evaluating the best trade-off between classification performance and energy expenditure. Experimental results, conducted on publicly available datasets, demonstrate that the best trade-off between energy consumption and accuracy is reached by selecting between 20 and 25 features, with an accuracy ranging between 73.56% and 87.44%, and an energy consumption between 2340.945 μJ and 3759.270 μJ
Value of PGT‐A when only one or two blastocysts are obtained: propensity‐score matching and cost‐effectiveness study
Objective: To compare the effectiveness and cost of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) with or without preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) when only one or two blastocysts are obtained. Methods: A dataset was gathered from 1829 patients including 368 non-PGT-A and 1461 PGT-A cycles with one or two blastocysts obtained, between April 2013 and July 2022. Patients were matched 1:1 by propensity-score matching for maternal age, number of metaphase-II oocytes inseminated and number of blastocysts obtained, achieving a database of 242 patients per group. The non-PGT-A and PGT-A groups were compared for differences in live birth rate (LBR) per embryo transfer (ET), cumulative LBR per patient, miscarriage rate (MR) per clinical pregnancy, number of days between oocyte retrieval and conclusion of the IVF cycle (primary outcome), mean expenses incurred at the clinic and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). Results: More than twice as many ETs were conducted in the non-PGT-A group compared with the PGT-A group, yet the cumulative LBR per patient was similar between groups (23.6% (95% CI, 18.5-29.5%) vs 27.3% (95% CI, 21.9-33.4%)). This outcome was achieved with a higher LBR per ET (16.2% (95% CI, 12.6-20.5%) vs 41.5% (95% CI, 33.9-49.4%)) and lower MR per clinical pregnancy (30.1% (95% CI, 21.8-42.6%) vs 13.9% (95% CI, 7.5-24.0%)) in the PGT-A group. The MR per patient was also lower in the PGT-A group (9.5% (95% CI, 6.2-14.1%) vs 4.5% (95% CI, 2.4-8.2%)). The mean duration between oocyte retrieval and IVF cycle conclusion was 131 (95% CI, 113-150) days in the non-PGT-A group vs 74 (95% CI, 61-87) days in the PGT-A group (P < 0.001; power = 99.8%). The ICER of PGT-A for the months saved between oocyte retrieval and conclusion of the IVF cycle was €499 overall, ranging between €170 and €2065 according to the number of blastocysts obtained and/or maternal age. The ICER of PGT-A for prevented miscarriages was €18 968, decreasing to €3525 when calculated among patients aged ≥ 35 years with two blastocysts obtained. Conclusions: When conducted in expert IVF clinics for patients indicated for the procedure, PGT-A is clinically valuable even when only one or two blastocysts are obtained. PGT-A reduces the number of ETs and miscarriages while the cumulative LBR per patient remains unaffected, and allows these outcomes to be achieved in a shorter timeframe. The ICER of PGT-A vs non PGT-A decreased as maternal age increased. © 2024 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology

La costruzione del Progetto di Vita richiede l’azione sinergica di tutte le figure coinvolte nei processi educativi: docenti, allieve/i, genitori e assistenti. Queste sono chiamate a cooperare per agire tanto sul rafforzamento delle competenze di alunni/e quanto sulle culture di riferimento (spesso pervase da matrici abiliste) e sulle relazioni che si instaurano tra i diversi attori coinvolti. Si tratta di un processo complesso, che non si esaurisce con l’applicazione di tecniche o procedure, in quanto richiede un lavoro di rete capillare ecosistemico (Gaspari, 2024a), nel quale ciascuno è chiamato a porsi come spinta istituente al cambiamento (Bocci, 2023). Sulla base di tali premesse, il contributo intende presentare il Questionario, elaborato all’interno di una ricerca più ampia (Guerini et al., 2024), avente come finalità quella di indagare i fattori che, secondo le percezioni dei genitori, facilitano o, al contrario, limitano la costruzione di un Progetto di Vita
Promuovere competenze riflessive nell’ambito del Corso di specializzazione per le attività di sostegno: una Sistematic Review sul contesto italiano.
La professione di docente specializzato/a per le attività di sostegno ri
chiede una mole molto ampia di competenze, che attengono a una moltepli
cità di saperi, da quelli più strettamente disciplinari a quelli che attengono
l’area relazionale, progettuale, organizzativa, ecc. Per tale ragione, è neces
sario che la formazione sia concepita in modo sempre più trasversale come
un’opportunità preziosa per consentire al professionista di agire in modo cir
colare sulle culture, sulle politiche e sulle pratiche inclusive: ciò è possibile
nella misura in cui il docente ha la possibilità di riflettere sia su se stesso, sui
propri punti di forza nonché sul sistema di attese, desideri, condizionamenti,
ecc., sia sulle criticità che attraversano in modo più esteso il sistema scola
stico. All’interno di tale prospettiva, i diversi laboratori previsti all’interno
del corso di specializzazione al sostegno possono assumere un ruolo privile
giato, per la loro potenzialità a configurarsi come un luogo peculiare in cui
promuovere la riflessività in azione e in cui consentire a ciascuna/o di speri
mentarsi in situazioni di apprendimento nuove e sfidanti. Sulla base di tali
premesse, il contributo intende offrire gli esiti di una revisione sistematica
dei contributi di ricerca che hanno focalizzato la loro attenzione su tale per
corso di formazione accademica: pur nella diversità dei contesti descritti, i
risultati evidenziano le potenzialità di tale percorso nel fornire alle/i corsiste/i
competenze significative. L’auspicio è di giungere a una revisione dei percorsi formativi in toto che, superando la dicotomia tra conoscenze teoriche e pratiche o applicative, prevedano un intreccio costante tra momento conoscitivo, applicativo e riflessivo
