Effects of Resistance vs High Intensity Interval Training on Myokines and Cancer Cell Suppression in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Trial

    No full text
Purpose: Reducing recurrence and mortality is crucial for breast cancer survivors. We investigated the effects of a 12-week resistance training (RT) vs high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program on myokines, cytokines secreted by skeletal muscle cells at rest in response to muscle contraction, and cancer cell inhibition. Methods: Twenty-eight survivors of breast cancer (age 55.5 ± 8.8 yr, body mass index 27.9 ± 5.1 kg/m2, time since diagnosis 31 ± 12.3 months) were randomly allocated to a 12-week supervised moderate to high intensity RT (n = 14) or HIIT (n = 14) program 3 days per week. Resting blood was collected before and post exercise program (at least 48 hours before the first and after the last exercise session) to measure serum levels of myokines (decorin, interleukin 6 [IL-6], secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine [SPARC], and oncostatin M [OSM]) and triple negative MDA-MB-231 cell growth in vitro, using real time cellular analysis to determine growth rate. Results: Exercise attendance was 85% for RT and 81% for HIIT. Serum levels of SPARC for RT and OSM for HIIT significantly (p < 0.05) increased (11 to 15%) after 12 weeks, with no significant differences between groups. MDA-MB-231 cell growth was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced for both RT and HIIT by 22% and 25%, respectively, with no significant difference between groups. Reductions in MDA-MB-231 cell growth in HIIT were associated with improvements in lean and fat mass. Conclusions: A program of RT or HIIT can increase levels of myokines (an effect considered beneficial given their potential cancer-suppressive effects) and inhibit growth of MDA-MB-231 cells in survivors of breast cancer. In addition, development of the anti-tumor environment may be mediated by exercise-related changes in muscle strength and body composition

Le “propagandiste comuniste”. Antifasciste, esuli, clandestine

Dynamics of phytoplankton communities in the Baltic Sea: insights from a multidimensional analysis of pigment and spectral data: part II, spectral dataset

    No full text
The use of hyperspectral satellite missions opens new opportunities for integrated approaches to the study of phytoplankton communities. The Baltic Sea, with its distinct mixture of marine and freshwater characteristics, is a natural laboratory for understanding marine ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed a dataset from the Baltic Sea containing simultaneous phytoplankton pigment concentrations and absorption spectra. We applied spectral derivative analysis and unsupervised machine learning techniques to identify the unique statistical relationships among phytoplankton pigments and inherent optical properties. The statistical analysis of the absorption spectra provides the basis for a predictive model to assess pigment concentrations from optical measurements. Additionally, we compare our results to know assessment methods, such as Gaussian spectral decomposition, that link the spectral analysis with phytoplankton pigment content. This study investigates the potential of statistical, data-driven analytical approaches in the development and validation of models for retrieving phytoplankton community composition. The integration of these findings with existing research contributes to the advancement of remote sensing capabilities for monitoring marine ecosystems in the Baltic Sea

Digital Transformation and Last-Mile Logistics in Food Delivery: A Comparative Analysis of Urban and Peripheral Models

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of digital technologies on the logistics sector, focusing on last-mile delivery in the food delivery industry in Italy. The research specifically compares two cities, Urbino and Milan, highlighting the differ ences in how Just Eat and Glovo operate in urban and peripheral contexts. In Urbino, small restaurant businesses face significant logistical challenges due to the absence of a robust food delivery network, requiring them to handle delivery services inde pendently. This contrasts with Milan, where both platforms offer more comprehen sive delivery solutions. By analyzing variables such as delivery price, minimum order price, delivery times, and customer reviews, the study identifies Glovo’s flex ible business model as better suited to smaller cities like Urbino, where fluctuating demand and limited resources make managing logistics difficult. The case of Alfonsino, a food delivery platform that has successfully operated in small towns, further supports this conclusion. The findings suggest that adopting a model like Glovo’s “Order & Delivery,” which offers greater flexibility and lower costs, could enhance delivery services in smaller cities. The research also highlights future opportunities for exploring the environmental impacts of crowdshipping and the role of technological advancements, such as autonomous delivery, in shaping the future of last-mile logistics
