Il dialogo tra Oriente e Occidente. Il caso della legislazione sul ripudio

    No full text
The legislation that has come down to us attests to a different repudium regime between East and West in the 5th century. However, the state and the nature of the sources makes the picture very complex. In addition to the difference in the regime (minimized or denied by some scholars), we will consider the circulation of norms in this sector of the legal system, the reception of some of them and the rejection of others, and the different normative production that suggests a long-distance dialogue between divergent conceptions of marriage and its unilateral dissolution. Those differences mirror different attitudes of the Eastern and Western Churches, as known from the conciliar canons and the Greek and Latin patristic texts. By means of an in-depth study of the institution of repudiation (in particular, Nov. Th. 2 and 12, C. 5.17.8, Nov. Val. 26 and 35.11) the paper aims to shed some light on the dialogue and contrasts between emperors and chancelleries of East and West

ESG incidents and corporate green bond market reaction

This paper examines how the secondary market for corporate green bonds reacts to the announcement of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) incidents. We compare the cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) of green bonds with those of similar conventional bonds issued by the same firm, using a large international sample covering the period 2013–2022. Our results indicate that the performance of both green and conventional bonds declines after an ESG incident, but the decline is more pronounced for conventional bonds. We attribute this finding to the cost-effectiveness motive driving investors’ response to the ESG incident, as we find that a) there is no green premium (at issuance) in our sample, and b) green bonds are, on average, less liquid than conventional bonds, making the latter easier to sell due to lower transaction costs. Consistent with this argument, we observe opposite findings − namely, no significant performance differences and conventional bonds outperforming green bonds after the ESG incident − only in cases where green bonds exhibit higher liquidity, such as those issued by European firms or those compliant with the Climate Bond Initiative (CBI) standards

When brand activism meets adversity: consumer reactions to performance- and value-related crises of varying severity

    Get PDF
Purpose This research aims to investigate the impact of brand activism on consumer perceptions and intentions. It explores whether activist brands are rewarded during performance-related crises and “penalized” during value-related crises, particularly when the latter are highly severe. Design/methodology/approach Three experiments were conducted to test the hypotheses, each examining different types of brand crises or varying levels of crisis severity. Findings Study 1 identifies a distinction between activist and nonactivist brands during performance-related crises in terms of brand attitude and willingness to pay more, favoring activist brands. Studies 2 and 3 reveal that, regardless of whether severity is perceived or objective, a value-related crisis leads to a decline in brand attitude, especially for activist brands, thereby nullifying the protective effect identified in Study 1. The interaction between brand type and severity in value-related crises shows that, under low severity, participants are still willing to pay more for the activist brand’s products. All studies indicate no difference in brand hate between activist and nonactivist brands, suggesting that other factors contribute to its development. Social implications This study highlights societal implications of brand activism, which is an increasingly widespread trend among companies, suggesting that consumers hold activist brands to higher ethical standards and judge them more severely in the case of value-related crises. This dynamic can drive companies willing to engage in activism to act more responsibly in their communication practices and closely align with socioenvironmental values. Originality/value This research enhances the understanding of brand activism in the context of brand crises by empirically investigating how brand activism shapes consumer perceptions and intentions across different types of crises and varying levels of severity

Algeria.

    No full text

Historical memories on slavery in southern Somalia and Cabo Delgado,Mozambique: slavery versus forced labor

    Get PDF
Living memories of past movements and migrations in and out of the Querimbas Islands, especially Ibo Island, are apt to present some surprises. When talking about slavery, some elders’ shared memories sometimes seem to be defensive, serving to justify the practice of slavery rather than decrying it. This may be ascribed to several factors. External observers often look at dependency interrelations in poor areas in ways that do not coincide with the views held by local people and there may be relevant historical reasons to account for the different perceptions. The reasons which lie behind the viewpoint held by some Ibo islanders would seem to be related to past events and conflicts that occurred many decades after slavery was abolished. This paper will explore some such reasons by inquiring into the ways people were recruited as forced laborers and looking into the policies that facilitated the lives of servants as opposed to people with autonomous occupations who could be coerced into forced labore

NANOMATERIALI PER IL TRATTAMENTO DELLE SUPERFICI DI MANUFATTI IN PIETRA E "MARMO" PER L'ARREDAMENTO DI INTERNI E OUTDOOR

S2 S.p.a, based in Fermignano (Pesaro-Urbino), is a company that since 1973 has been working in the wood sector and produces and markets finished products of interior furniture characterized by the most prestigious international brands of Made in Italy. In the last twenty years, the company also addressed its interest to various types of tables and other elements made of marble which therefore became a fundamental material for complementing and exclusive design for the needs of the international luxury living market. The need to treat the surfaces of stone and marble lithotypes to ensure maximum durability, for aesthetic qualities and waterproofing, together with the choice of S2 S.p.a also to target production for outdoor, lead the company to test innovative products. In this way, the Eureka doctoral program started in collaboration with S2 S.p.a with the final aim of being able to identify one or more nanometric size products to be applied to the surfaces of the tables, suitable for the whole spectrum of used carbonatic rocks and marbles currently in process and potential other lithotypes. This in order to ensure durability and maintenance of aesthetic qualities (as chromatic variations) and self-cleaning capacity, both for interior and outdoor furnitures. In addition, the testing of protective nano-coatings were aimed at compatibility with treatments already in use by S2 S.p.a. and the maintenance of physical mechanical strength and waterproofing features. There is currently a wealth of scientific literature on the use of nanometric materials for surface treatment of many types of marbles and carbonate rocks, either by semiconductors or biodegradable polymers, in liquid solutions, possibly with the addition of doping elements or mineral phases. Among the materials already tested to ensure the durability of surfaces of marbles and other rock lithotypes, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been used with great success and interest, thanks to its super-hydrophilic characteristics and photocatalytic efficiency which guarantee self-cleaning, antibacterial and antifungal functions, and a reduction of pollution from NOx, SOx and volatile organic compounds. In this PhD thesis, nine lithologies of sedimentary rocks and marbles have been selected to be analyzed in agreement with the company S.p.a., namely Arabescato, Bianco Carrara, Calacatta, Dark Emperador, Nero Marquinia, Portoro Silver, Rosso Levanto, Sahara Noir and Verde Alpi. Physical properties of these rocks were firstly determined (i.e, porosity and porous distribution, bulk density, apparent density) and then, each lithology was examined in double samples, respectively with polished and satin finish and appropriately treated with solutions based on nanoparticles of titanium dioxide in different aqueous/alcoholic solutions or in alcohol doped with silver chloride. The samples, untreated and treated surfaces with the three different protective TiO2-based nano-coating solutions were subjected to tests of: (i) water absorption by capillarity; (ii) roughness through profilometry to characterize the surface morphology of each lithology (pre-and post titanium bioxide treatment) and finally (iii) colorimetry with rodamine B dye method to determine photocatalytic self-cleaning activities in the surfaces of the marbles through the exposure to ultraviolet rays up to 26 hours. It was possible to evaluate the effects and changes in the natural aesthetic characteristics of the nine lithologies after the application of the different TiO2 nanoparticle coating-solutions and the relative self-cleaning photocatalytic activities
