Alfredo Oriani and the Challenges of the Human Body from Lay Asceticism to Personal Free Time (1871-1909)
This essay return to the originality of Alfredo Oriani (1852-1909), writer and political polemist, putting the human body at the center of analysis: The body represented in his literary work, the genius misunderstood, and human attempts with the bicycle. From the beginning of the twentieth century, Oriani was conscious that the “cult of the body” was becoming a new phenomenon. In this way, the marxist ideology of the division of social class was less important. Indeed, for various reasons, the “radical” left and the “clerical” right felt threatened by the emerging cult of physicality
Plant extracts and essential oils for modern sustainable crop protection and their biomonitoring effects using free-living nematodes
In agriculture, increasing attention has been paid to limiting the amount of synthetic chemical products employed, preserving the ecosystem’s biodiversity and human health. Potential alternative solutions have been found in plant extracts and essential oils, which appear as promising candidates for their properties (bioactive, highly biodegradable products) in managing plant diseases in agriculture. Indeed, many studies have reported their relevant antimicrobial, nematocidal, insecticidal, larvicidal, and fungicidal properties. However, information on the potential lethal or sublethal effects caused by these compounds is limited to in vitro studies and is completely absent on free-living soil fauna. Nematodes are regarded as model organisms in many branches of biology, from developmental biology to ecotoxicology and biomonitoring assessment. Therefore, to assess the possible effects of one of the best essential oil (EO) candidates for application in crop protection, a pilot experiment in the field was carried out. In particular, chickpea seeds (Cicerarietinum) were treated before sowing by applying a high concentration of basil (Ocimum basilicum) EO (25% v/v, methyl chavicol chemotype). The coating was obtained with chitosan (CHI), a natural aminopolysaccharide commonly used in combination with EOs to limit their volatility. The experiment was designed to assess the possible changes in nematode taxonomic composition and biodiversity from control soil plots with untreated seeds, soil plots with seeds coated only with CHI, and others with seeds coated with EO + CHI as well as before and after the sowing. The preliminary data seem to support the idea that the coating with basil EO is potentially eco-friendly
The Questionnaire for Psychotic Experiences: Preliminary validation of the Italian version (QPE-I) in a general population sample
Mobility through sound. Methodological notes on the use of sound in mobility studies
This multimedia article emerges from the interplay of sight and listening during my fieldwork in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), and aims to establish both theoretical and empirical connections between sonic ethnography and mobility studies. It raises methodological questions about the incorporation of field recordings into ethnography and the interpretation of non-linguistic and non-musical sounds in research focused on studying migrants’ mobility and its support. This article proposes exploratory responses by dwelling on the role of listening in social research and – through the inclusion of soundscapes within the text – on the interpretation of sound as qualitative data. The textual component traces the theoretical, descriptive and interpretive coordinates that informed the operations of recording and assembling the sound composition. In conclusion, the article suggests broadening the focus to include the sonic environments of other spaces of solidarity along migration routes, thus opening up the use of this methodology to other contexts
Simultaneous detection of respiratory virus RNA on environmental surfaces in a university setting by a sensitive Surface 3-Step PCR platform
: Most respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2 spread through aerosols and fomites, remaining viable in the air and on surfaces. The present study aims to detect simultaneously by a multiplex molecular approach (Surface 3-step PCR platform), the presence of the three major co-circulating respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2, Flu A/B and RSV A/B) from inert surface samples in non-healthcare environments on a university setting in Central Italy. In total, 400 environmental surface swabs were collected during the study period in a three time point longitudinal program (T1, the end of the first semester: November-December 2023, weeks 48-49; T2, the extraordinary exam session: January 2024, weeks 2-4; T3, the start of the 2nd semester: February 2024, weeks 8-9) among which 62 (16%) were positive for viral RNA and with the positive rate that dropped from 20% (25/125) to 8% (10/130). The frequency of environmental contamination was higher in small classrooms (30/135, 22%) than in medium (15/105, 14%) and large (13/115, 11%) ones. Here, we describe the use of a novel rapid and sensitive combined multistep molecular platform involving two process controls, one synthetic RNA added directly to the sample and one endogenous human, able to detect low copy numbers of viral RNA targets in high-touch surfaces, with high sensitivity (98% of valid results). This study shows the potential as an effective solution to apply targeted interventions to prevent the spread of the airborne infections within the university community
The Integration of Mental Health and Social Care Services in Emergency Situations. The Case of the 2016 Earthquake in the Marche Region
In the field of healthcare, the tendency to seek organizational models based on the integration of all social and healthcare services emerges, as demonstrated by the WHO guidelines. In the Italian healthcare system, this has led to the creation of local integration systems that involve the definition of protocols and formal relationships between centers that provide social and healthcare services. Catastrophic events, such as earthquakes or floods, cause rapid and unexpected changes that undermine the planned structure of the inter-organizational structure. Existing network configurations must quickly adapt to the new situation. Our work presents the results of a study involving ASUR (Azienda Sanitaria Unica Regionale) Marche in the province of Ascoli Piceno, which was hit by the 2016 earthquake, and the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, aimed at studying the evolution of the structure of the inter-organisational network linking the centres involved in providing social welfare services in the field of mental health, as a consequence of the seismic event
