Phenotypic and genetic analysis of auction selling performances of young Simmental calves
Italian Simmental (IS) is a dual-purpose cattle breed that counts about 90,000 cows registered in its official Herdbook. The breeding scheme is based on a composite index in which meat production has a 20% weight. The sale of calves is a source of revenue for farmers; thus, the Italian Simmental Breeders Association is planning to include data coming from auctions in its breeding scheme. The aim of this study was to analyse phenotypic and genetic background of age at auction (AU), live body weight (LBW), price per kg of body weight (PKg) and total sale price (TSP) recorded during auctions. Records were available for 51,825 Simmental calves coming from 2180 herds and sold during 898 auctions in the period 2004–2023. The traits were analysed using herd, sex, age of the dam as cross-classified fixed effects; for the genetic analysis, animal and maternal genetic effects were included. All considered effects had a significant impact on the analysed traits. Heritability estimates were 0.16 ± 0.01, 0.35 ± 0.02, 0.24 ± 0.02 and 0.27 ± 0.02, for AU, LBW, PKg and TSP, respectively. The high phenotypic correlation found between LBW and TSP confirmed the weight as the main variable responsible for the selling price. The results corroborated the negative genetic correlations between AU and weight or TSP. The analysed traits were almost not correlated with the other traits already included in the breeding program. The efficacy of these traits for predicting future performances of calves at the end of the cycle of fattening should be further investigated
Progress and Prospects of Biomolecular Materials in Solar Photovoltaic Applications
This Review examines up-to-date advancements in the integration of biomolecules and
solar energy technologies, with a particular focus on biohybrid photovoltaic systems.
Biomolecules have recently garnered increasing interest as functional components in a wide
range of solar cell architectures, since they offer a huge variety of structural, optical, and
electronic properties, useful to fulfill multiple roles within photovoltaic devices. These roles
spanfromactingaslight-harvesting sensitizers and charge transport mediators to serving as
micro- and nanoscale structural scaffolds, rheological modifiers, and interfacial stabilizers.
In this Review, a comprehensive overview of the state of the art about the integration of
biomolecules across the various generations of photovoltaics is provided. The functional
roles of pigments, DNA,proteins, and polysaccharides are critically reported improvements
and limits associated with the use of biological molecules in optoelectronics. The molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between biomolecules and semiconductors are also discussed as essential for a functional integration of biomolecules in solar cells. Finally, this Review shows the current state of the art, and the most significant results achieved in the use of biomolecules in solar cells, with the main scope of outlining some guidelines for future further developments in the field of biohybrid photovoltaics

Active Breaks for Inclusive Mathematics: an Educational Design Research Approach to Developing the ABMOVE! Programme
The ABMove! programme is an educational intervention integrating active breaks into mathematics instruction for primary schools. Based on Universal Design for Learning principles and embodied cognition, this approach uses structured physical activities to enhance mathematical learning while promoting inclusivity. The 12-week program features three 10-minute active breaks weekly, designed to improve executive functions, reduce mathematics anxiety, and enhance student engagement. Developed through Educational Design Research, ABMove! provides teachers with comprehensive resources to implement active breaks based on the mathematics curriculum. This paper presents the theoretical framework, describes the program's structure and implementation, and discusses the expected outcomes for students' mathematical learning and classroom inclusivity

Emotional Responses in Clinical Ethics Consultation Decision-Making: An Exploratory Study
Integrating Clinical Ethics Consultants (CECs) into healthcare requires understanding how they apply bioethical knowledge while managing cognitive and emotional challenges in ethical deliberations. Ethical consultations often elicit strong emotions, yet their impact on decision-making remains underexplored. This study explores the emotional responses of 52 CECs from the United States and 10 European countries through a semi-structured survey. Participants selected a real ethical case they had encountered and described their emotional reactions during and after deliberation. Findings revealed that almost 77% of CECs experienced negative emotions such as frustration, sadness, or anger during deliberation, while 21% reported neutral or positive feelings. Although satisfaction and relief increased after deliberation, negative emotions often persisted. Additionally, 45% of participants reported feelings of inadequacy or remorse, 12% expressed uncertainty about their decision, and 5% stated they would change their decision in hindsight. The accumulation of negative emotions may affect CECs’ well-being and judgment, highlighting the need for structured support. Managing cognitive and emotional demands is essential to maintaining CECs’ effectiveness, underscoring the importance of targeted training programs and support strategies to enhance ethical decision-making and resilience in high-stakes medical contexts

Among the vault construction techniques developed in different areas in the Mediterranean basin, the realine vaults technique presents characteristics of particular interest. The term realine identifies thin vaults, built in Sicily until the 1950s, whose thickness is less than 10 cm. For their construction, there is evidence that the materials used were clay bricks (1 cm thick) connected with gypsum paste to form no more than three superimposed layers. Such structures, in which the materials used can no longer be separated once laid, are called “cohesive” and their strength depends on their shape.
Based on these assumptions, the main purpose of this paper is to highlight the identifying principles of this technique. An example is the limited use of formworks, as well as the great lightness and ease of laying. Therefore, this leads to the definition and design of new shell vaulted systems, which follow the principles of cost-effectiveness and eco-compatibility increasingly indispensable in construction

Starting from the idea according to which there is a process of humanization international law, this work aims to dismantle the dichotomy between justice and humanity present in certain assumptions of our legal culture. After that, attention is focused on the evolution of the international law of human rights and humanitarian law, where different meanings of humanity are identified: humanity as a universal title of rights, as the identification criterion of the bearer of the duties to protect rights, as the principle that commands the protection of human dignity of the enemies of humanity in international criminal justice, as the project to alleviate suffering during wars. It is argued that in the international context a way of understanding the relationship between justice and humanity that surpasses their dichotomous relationship emerges. Convergence through sustainable development: can EU developing regions make it happen? firm-level counterfactual evidence via Machine Learning
This work investigates whether EU cohesion policies aiming at environmental improvement and carbon reduction have an economic impact on adopters. By merging data from Opencoesione, with firms’ information from AIDA, we look at the changes in firms’ performance due to the sustain-ability-oriented technologies financed by the European cohesion funds during the 2007–13programming period. We include firms that participated in pilot programs and received public incentives to upgrade their production plants with sustainable technologies, and we use MachineLearning (ML) techniques to identify the most appropriate counterfactuals for a multilevel DiD setting. Our results indicate a strong and positive policy effect on firms’ profitability, with dissimilar dynamics for different levels of public support. Additionally, over time, the policy effect on treated firms tends to diminish, suggesting the possibility of a rebound effect where the gains in production efficiency and energy savings may be, at least partially, repurposed by firms to increase production (and profits) instead of reducing absolute emissions. This perfectly aligns with what one can expect from economic agents at the micro-level: firms’ actions are guided by the search for ways to obtain profit increases. However, at the macro-level, policymakers should question if the policy design could be improved through the adoption of conditional subsidies or regulatory mechanisms that, by limiting emissions, could foster more environmental benefits

Il saggio ripercorre le tappe attraverso le quali Giovanni Gentile ha elaborato il suo sistema filosofico come "filosofia dell'atto puro" e ha concepito il suo "sistema di logica". Tale ricostruzione è stata possibile ripercorrendo la sua produzione. Dal volume su La Riforma della dialettica hegeliana pubblicato nel 1913 si giunge al volume sulla Teoria generale dello spirito come atto puro del 1915, opera propedeutica al Sistema di logica come teoria del conoscere. Il primo volume del Sistema di logica come teoria del conoscere è stato pubblicato nel 1917, mentre il secondo nel 1923, anche se Gentile aveva terminato di scriverlo già nel 1921, quindi prima che si insediasse il Governo Mussolini, nell’ottobre del 1922
