Exploring the Functional Properties of Leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam. Cultivated in Sicily Using Precision Agriculture Technologies for Potential Use as a Food Ingredient
This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological quality and functional properties of
Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves from plants cultivated in Sicily, with the objective of exploring
their potential use in functional food production. Precision agriculture techniques,
including unmanned aerial vehicle-based multispectral remote sensing, were used to
determine the optimal harvesting time for M. oleifera. After harvesting, leaves were dried
using a smart solar dryer system based on a wireless sensor network and milled with a
laboratory centrifugal mill to produce powdered M. oleifera leaves (PMOLs). Plate counts
showed no colonies of undesired microorganisms in PMOLs. The MiSeq Illumina analysis
revealed that the class Alphaproteobacteria was dominant (83.20% of Relative
Abundance) among bacterial groups found in PMOLs. The hydroalcoholic extract from
PMOLs exhibited strong redox-active properties in solution assays and provided
antioxidant protection in a cell-based lipid peroxidation model (CAA50: 5.42 μg/mL).
Additionally, it showed antiproliferative activity against three human tumour epithelial
cell lines (HepG2, Caco-2, and MCF-7), with GI50 values ranging from 121.03 to 237.75
μg/mL. The aromatic profile of PMOLs includes seven phytochemical groups: alcohols,
aldehydes, ketones, esters, acids, terpenes, and hydrocarbons. The most representative
compounds were terpenes (27.5%), ketones (25.3%), and alcohols (14.5%). Results suggest
that PMOLs can serve as a natural additive for functional foods
Amber resins provenance and datation by non invasive FTIR and chemometric analysis
In this study, 28 fossil resins of amber samples from various localities in Europe, Asia and America. Infrared spectroscopy was used to identify the molecular features that characterize these ambers. Through the development of a tailored chemometric approach, we reduced the impact of non-significant spectral contributions and highlighted the most relevant features for classifying amber samples. This was achieved by applying second-derivative processing to the spectra and segmenting them into specific wavenumber ranges. Our novel approach successfully groups ambers based on both age and geographical provenance using their FTIR spectral profiles. Additionally, it isolates the molecular vibrations that have the greatest influence on this classification, particularly the contributions from functional groups that differentiate these samples. This method offers a valuable tool for researchers engaged in amber provenance studies, especially for succinites originated from Eastern Europe, providing a new approach to identify and classify unknown resin samples based on their unique molecular signatures

Carnivores from Arena Cave: Pleistocene predators’ tales from Sicily
The Pleistocene site of Arena Cave (Baida, Palermo) represents one of the least studied
mammal assemblages from Sicily. It is a fissure-filling deposit, currently threatened by the
instability of an abandoned quarry front. Preliminary descriptions of its faunal content,
provided by Fabiani (1928) and confirmed by Vaufrey (1929), report the presence of four
iconic European Pleistocene carnivorous taxa: Canis lupus, Crocuta crocuta spelaea,
Panthera spelaea spelaea, and Ursus arctos. Although no stratigraphic data are available,
the biostratigraphic framework suggests a wide chronological range: from the Early-Middle
Pleistocene (Palaeoloxodon falconeri F.C.) and Late-Middle Pleistocene (Palaeoloxodon
mnaidriensis F.C.) to the Late Pleistocene (San Teodoro-Pianetti F.C.), Late Glacial
(Castello F.C.), and even the Holocene. It is therefore plausible that the assemblage
represents a mixed accumulation of faunal remains from different phases, which makes the
site particularly valuable for understanding the evolutionary pathways of Sicilian mammal
communities across the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. This study aims to fill a gap in our
knowledge of the palaeobiology of Pleistocene Sicilian carnivores, which has never been
systematically investigated at Arena Cave. Specifically, we estimated the body mass of each
predator (C. lupus, C. crocuta spelaea, Panthera s. spelaea) and assessed potential
ecological interactions within the carnivore guild. Our methodological framework combines
morphometric analyses with theoretical ecological models - Prey Focus Mass (PFM) and
Prey Mass Spectrum (PMS) - and incorporates the calculation of competition indices (CIs)
to assess niche overlap and infer predator guild structure (Hemmer, 2004; Hertler & Volmer,
2008). Our results offer new insights into the palaeobiology and trophic ecology of Sicilian
Pleistocene carnivores, contributing to a broader understanding of predator guild dynamics
in island ecosystems

The sphere of moral action is plagued by paradoxes. Bruno Celano considers some traditional moral paradoxes related to recursive moral norms and tragic choices. This article extends Cel-ano's analysis to other paradoxes discussed in recent decades in the context of the debates on population ethics and the Trolley Problem. The prospect that there is no moral theory capable of respecting our moral intuitions can be seen as a threat to moral realism. This idea was recently developed by Christopher Cowie in his original defence of the moral error theory. A distinctive feature of Cowie's view is the connection between normative ethics and metaethics. This article proposes a second way of using the problem of moral paradoxes to connect normative enquiry and metaethics, the structure of which is opposite to Cowie's: not “from ethics to metaethics”, but “from metaethics to ethics”
