Secure Satellite Downlink with Hybrid RIS and AI-Based Optimization
In this paper, we explore a secure multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) satellite
downlink communication system, enhanced by the integration of a hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface
(RIS). The study formulates a robust joint design for satellite and RIS beamforming, aimed at maximizing
the secrecy rate of the overall system. Both the active and passive elements of the RIS are optimized,
taking into account practical models that reflect real-world constraints, such as outdated channel state
information (CSI) and the power consumption of the system. To address the highly complex, dynamic,
and multidimensional nature of the beamforming design problem, deep reinforcement learning (DRL)
techniques are employed. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beamforming
strategy, highlighting significant performance improvements when utilizing hybrid-RIS compared to traditional passive RIS solutions in wireless communication systems

Integration of ion-exchange and crystallisation processes to recover boric acid and magnesium hydroxide from saltworks bitterns
The lack of primary sources of the so-called Critical Raw Materials within the European Union is directing research towards alternative mining to extract them. Among the different potential alternative sources, the brines generated in traditional saltworks (denominated bitterns) can be a very promising option. In fact, several elements can be up to 50 times more concentrated in bitterns than in seawater. Magnesium, for example, can present concentrations above 50 g/L, and its recovery can be pursued as hydroxide by using crystallization processes. However, the presence of boron even at relatively low concentrations (100 to 150 mg/L) can contaminate the final magnesium hydroxide, thus making it not suitable for certain applications, such as the refractory industry (target <∼ 0.11 mg B/g of magnesium hydroxide). Because of boron speciation (as boric acid), only chelating ion-exchange resins based on N-methylglucamine functional groups can selectively remove boron from aqueous solutions. In this work, the integration of ion-exchange and crystallization processes is carried out to produce pure magnesium hydroxide from real bitterns collected in Trapani (Sicily). Two different bitterns were treated with two commercial B-selective chelating ion-exchange resins (S108 and CRB05), and the boron-free bittern was later used for Mg(OH)2(s) crystallization. The effect of pH on Mg(OH)2(s) crystallization was studied and data was compared (in terms of purity) in the cases with or without B-removal pre-treatment. Moreover, once the resin was saturated, elution with HCl allowed to recover H3BO3 via evaporative crystallization. Results showed the possibility of recovering pure Mg(OH)2(s) (>98 %) with low B-content (<0.10 mg B/g), matching the specifications for refractory industry, and H3BO3(s) with 95 % purity
New record of Encarsia protransvena and confirmed occurrence of Encarsia hispida (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) as parasitoids of Singhiella simplex (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Italy
Encarsia protransvena (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is recorded here for the first time in Italy as a parasitoid of the whitefly Singhiella simplex (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), one of the most invasive alien pests of exotic Ficus species. Singhiella simplex, originating from the Oriental region, has established a global presence. Monitoring of the whitefly and its parasitoids was conducted in the southern areas of Italy, providing crucial insights into their distribution and interactions. The taxonomic identity of E. protransvena, was confirmed by scrutiny of morphological and molecular taxonomic characters. At the time
of writing, we also obtained some specimens of Encarsia hispida from the host collected in Campania. We reserve the right to provide bio-ethological information on the species in the future. Comprehensive illustrations and diagnostic features are provided for the host and the parasitoids. An identification key is included for all Encarsia species associated with
S. simplex, which provides a valuable tool to distinguish these aphelinid wasps for future research and applications in biological control program
ANALYSIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SICILIAN OLD LANDRACES OF CEREALS TO ADDRESS AT MALTING INDUSTRY
Clinical Efficacy of Isatuximab Plus Carfilzomib and Dexamethasone in Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma Patients
Isatuximab, a novel anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody, is approved in combination with carfilzomib and dexamethasone (Isa-Kd) in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) patients. Because of its recent introduction, real-world efficacy and safety are poorly reported. In this Italian multicenter real-life observational retrospective study, efficacy and safety of the Isa-Kd regimen were evaluated in a cohort of 103 RRMM patients. Overall response rate (ORR) was 85%, with stringent (sCR) or complete response (CR) in 18% of cases and very good partial response (VGPR) in 39%. Median PFS and OS were not reached within the study period, while 1-year PFS and OS were 72% and 77%, respectively. Hematological toxicities were observed in 42% of subjects, and cardiac toxicities occurred in 24% of cases. Moreover, we conducted a subanalysis on patients (N = 69) treated with Isa-Kd after one prior line of therapy, showing an ORR of 88%, with sCR + CR in 20% of subjects, VGPR in 46%, and PR in 22% of patients. In this group, median PFS and OS were not reached, while 1-year PFS and OS were 92% and 95%, respectively. In conclusions, our study confirmed Isa-Kd as an effective treatment option for RRMM with a manageable safety profile even in real-life settings
An organogold compound impairs Leishmania amazonensis amastigotes survival and delays lesion progression in murine cutaneous leishmaniasis: Mechanistic insights
Leishmaniasis is one of the most important neglected diseases, classically characterized by three clinical forms that if left untreated can lead to skin lesions, lifelong scarring, or death depending on the parasite species. Unfortunately, treatment is unsatisfactory and the search for an improved therapy has been a priority. Gold compounds have emerged as promising candidates and among them, Au(I)bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (Au(BzTMX)2) has stood out. We have shown that it alters the plasma membrane permeability of Leishmania amazonensis and L. braziliensis, with superior activity for L. amazonensis. Herein, we moved a step forward towards the elucidation of its mechanism of action in L. amazonensis axenic amastigotes in vitro and in vivo. After 24 h incubation, Au(BzTMX)2 induced changes in safranin O uptake, reflecting the ultrastructural changes observed in mitochondria, especially cristae swelling, and oxygen consumption rates. Besides mitochondrial alterations, plasma membrane blebbing and the formation of multilamellar structures were also observed suggesting an autophagy-like process induction. In vivo, Au(BzTMX)2 was capable of delaying lesion progression, decreasing the total ulcerated area and leading to a marked reduction in the parasite burden of infected BALB/c mice. Taking all into consideration, our results give support to the current knowledge of the importance of gold compounds in therapeutics and open new possibilities for leishmaniasis treatment
