    BIBI è un programma di ricerca e di intervento educativo volto a promuovere il rispetto di genere e a decostruire stereotipi attraverso la conoscenza e l’analisi di biografie d’infanzia. L’articolo illustra la prospettiva storico-pedagogica e critico-culturale del progetto, che intreccia la storia dell’immaginario femminile con la riflessione sull’educazione alla parità e sull’empowerment delle bambine e delle giovani lettrici. Il programma si fonda sull’esame di un corpus ampio e articolato di biografie individuali e collettive di figure femminili pubblicate nell’editoria italiana per l’infanzia negli ultimi venticinque anni, mettendo in luce come queste narrazioni contribuiscano alla costruzione di modelli positivi e alla trasmissione di una memoria culturale di genere. L'intervento si inserisce nel quadro della ricerca storico-pedagogica sull’educazione di genere e sulla funzione formativa della letteratura per l’infanzia, intesa come strumento di consapevolezza e di trasformazione sociale

    Two similar permafrost degradation landslides at Paatuut, West Greenland, caused tsunamis of substantially different magnitudes

    On November 21, 2000 CE, the c. 48 × 106 m3 Paatuut landslide in West Greenland triggered a tsunami with a maximum runup height of c. 45 m. Although a field team examined the landslide in the immediate aftermath, prior events and processes, in addition to the cause of the landslide, were never studied. We combined field data, satellite images, and historical photos to bridge this knowledge gap. Our investigation unveiled that a hitherto unknown c. 55 × 106 m3 landslide occurred at the same slope in May or June of 1996. This landslide was a frozen debris avalanche, and we suggest a result of permafrost degradation since c. 1949. The subsequent 2000 landslide and tsunami removed and obscured the traces of the 1996 landslide. Interestingly, the 1996 landslide caused a tsunami with a runup height of only 15 m near the landslide impact area, one-third of the 2000 tsunami. We applied tsunami modelling and interpretation of morphological field evidence to explore why these volumetrically similar landslides on the same slope could produce markedly different tsunami runup heights. The deposit of the 1996 landslide on the coastal slope produced a large, unconsolidated, wet sediment volume that could be entrained in the 2000 landslide, and in addition, reducing the basal friction of this later event. Furthermore, differences in drop height and rheology between the two landslides may explain the different tsunamigenic potential. We see evidence of much older post-glacial landslide activity on the slope, constituting a static preconditioning factor for the landslides. The 1996 and 2000 landslides demonstrate the incomplete record of large landslides in the Arctic and the importance of considering the runout path, substrate, and entrainment in determining the tsunamigenic potential of landslides. Above all, they also demonstrate the sensitivity of these Arctic slopes to global warming and associated permafrost degradation

    Nel corso degli ultimi anni, due temi si sono ambiguamente intrecciati nelle città italiane: la questione della rigenerazione urbana e l’emergenza abitativa studentesca. Con una sollecitudine ignota a molti dei processi di trasformazione urbana, le due problematiche sembrano trovare presto una sintesi sinergica quasi immediata. Se il mercato immobiliare ha risposto con prontezza - e molto velocemente si è visto emergere sulla scena immobiliare il settore delle PBSA (che già da qualche tempo aveva iniziato ad affermarsi, almeno in alcune città) - anche il settore pubblico dopo poco ha reagito energicamente. Il contributo avanza alcune riflessioni critiche sui processi di trasformazione della città nei quali si manifesta una particolare "emergenza alloggi" degli studenti universitari e nuove dinamiche del mercato immobiliare che se sembrano rispondere a nuovi specifici fabbisogni ma in realtà condizionano i processi di rigenerazione urbana e le politiche pubbliche di pianificazione... ma l'emergenza abitiva resta

    The Gini Index as a Coefficient of Variation

    The coefficient of variation, which measures the variability of a distribution from its mean, is not uniquely defined in the multidimensional case, and so is the multidimensional Gini index, which measures the inequality of a distribution in terms of the mean differences among its observations. In this paper, we connect these two notions of sparsity, and propose a multidimensional coefficient of variation based on a multidimensional Gini index. We demonstrate that the proposed coefficient possesses the properties of the univariate coefficient of variation. We also show its connection with the Voinov-Nikulin coefficient of variation, and compare it with the other multivariate coefficients available in the literature

    Automated AI-based segmentation of canine hepatic focal lesions from CT studies

    Introduction Hepatic masses are a common occurrence in veterinary medicine, with treatment options largely dependent on the nature and location of the mass. The gold standard treatment involves surgical removal of the mass, often followed by chemotherapy if necessary. However, in cases where mass removal is not feasible, chemotherapy becomes the primary treatment option. Accurate lesion segmentation is crucial in such scenarios to ensure precise treatment planning.Methods This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning-based algorithm for the automatic segmentation of hepatic masses in dogs. To achieve this, 200 canine CT cases with hepatic masses were collected from two clinics and the Antech Imaging Solutions database. Experienced veterinarians manually segmented the lesions to provide ground truth data. 25/200 CTs were excluded because they did not met the inclusion criteria. Finally, the algorithm was built using the nnUNet v2 framework and trained on 130 cases with a 5-fold training scheme. It was subsequently tested on 45 cases.Results The algorithm demonstrated high accuracy, achieving an average Dice score of 0.86 and an Average Symmetric Surface Distance (ASSD) of 2.70 mm.Conclusions This represents the first report of a deep learning-based algorithm for the automatic segmentation of hepatic masses in dogs using CT imaging, highlighting its potential utility in clinical practice for improved treatment planning

    Design and optimisation of radiation resistant AC- and DC-coupled resistive LGADs

    Future high-energy physics experiments require a paradigm shift in radiation detector design. In response to this challenge, resistive LGADs that combine Low Gain Avalanche Diode technology with resistive readout have been developed. The prototypes created so far, employing AC-coupled contacts, have demonstrated impressive performance, achieving a temporal resolution of 38 ps and a spatial resolution of 15 μm with a pixel pitch of 450 μm. To tackle some of the issues encountered up to this point, particularly the non-uniform response across the entire surface of the detector, a new version with DC-coupled contacts has recently been developed. The Synopsys® Sentaurus TCAD simulations that have guided the design of their first production, released by the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in November 2024, will be presented below along with a concise summary of the history of the prototypes with AC-coupled contacts

    Optimization considerations in the design of shell and tube condensers implementing enhanced tubes: Experimental and theoretical analysis

    Passive heat transfer enhancement technique, which includes modification of surfaces by various shapes and structures, has been a topic of research during the last decade. The helical microfin tubes, which are deemed promising in improvements of heat transfer, are often implemented in the context of flow condensation. While research regarding their impact on the two-phase flow of refrigerants is accruing, a systematic assessment is required to ensure their promised claims to increase the efficacy of thermal systems. To further expand the database within the literature, two performance criteria, Performance Index (PI) and Penalty Factor (PF), are evaluated for a database comprised of 1192 data during flow condensation of low global warming potential HydroFluoroOlefins (HFOs) inside microfin tubes ranging from 3 to 7 mm outer diameter (OD). The tube of 5 mm OD demonstrated the highest efficacy by the method of PI, while also demonstrating undesirable high PF values. In microfin tubes, despite enhanced heat transfer due to augmentation of turbulence and shear-stress forces, higher frictional pressure drops could nullify the positive effects depending on the circumstances. In a shell and tube condenser with condensation on the tube side, for fixed input and output temperatures on the coolant-side, the pressure drops could cause a noticeable drop in logarithmic mean temperature difference (LMTD). Therefore, an optimal design mass flux must exist to maximize heat transfer coefficients while avoiding adverse effects on LMTD. In some cases, due to lower frictional pressure losses for a smooth tube, it is better to avoid using a microfin structure all together.
