Relationship between Atherosclerosis and Cancer: An observational outcome study
Background and aims: It was investigated whether there is a relationship between advanced atherosclerosis of the carotid artery and cancer. Method: The carotid Total Plaque Area (TPA), the maximum plaque thickness, and the cardiovascular risk based on Framingham calculator using body-mass-index were determined in healthy subjects using ultrasound. We compared the outcome in subjects with advanced atherosclerosis of the carotid artery (type III-IV b finding) with and without statin treatment. The follow-up was collected as part of occupational health check-ups.Result: In 4207 healthy men aged 35-65 years (50±8 years) we found 578 subjects with advanced atherosclerosis of the carotid artery (type III-IV b finding). A follow-up was available for 566 (97.9%) subjects. The average follow-up time was 48 months (range 0 to 139 months). Ten subjects were excluded because of missing data on treatment. A total number of 230 subjects was treated with a statin, 326 received no statin. Within the group of these subjects (54±6 years), 33 men died (15 cancer, 4 strokes, 11 heart attacks, 1 COPD, 1 sepsis, 1 cirrhosis of the liver).In the group with CVD death, two subjects were treated with a statin, 13 were untreated. In the group with cancer death, two subjects were treated with a statin, 13 were untreated. The death rate because of cancer and CVD was 1.7% for the treated subjects and 8.0% for the untreated subjects.In the group with low risk (n= 1890), six men died (2 traffic accidents, 1aneurysm bleeding, 2 cancer, 1 unclear, a follow-up examination has been completed for 43.9% (n= 830) of the subjects, mean follow-up time of 65 months (0-137 months). One man died (Parkinson) within the group with intermediate risk. In this group (n= 482) a follow-up examination has been completed for 55% (n= 265) with a mean follow-up time of 55 months (total range: 0-130 months). In the reference group (no atherosclerosis; n= 1257) follow-up has been completed in 38.3% (n= 482) with a mean follow-up time of 60 (0-145) months and nobody died.In 3203 healthy women aged 35-65 years nobody died of cancer.Conclusion: The development of cancer in men with advanced atherosclerosis of the carotid artery appears to be noticeable. The question of whether there is a causal relationship requires further investigations.</p
Cerebral Palsy: A Mini-Review updating the briefings of role of physiotherapy
One of the most prevalent developmental disabilities is Cerebral Palsy (CP). CP is a term for a group of neurological disorders characterized by mobility and posture problems that limit activities and are caused by a static disruption in the growing brain, which is typically accompanied by other impairments and health problems. CP is not a single diseased entity; it comprises problems with body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, fine motor abilities, gross motor skills, oral motor functioning, posture, and balance, to name a few. Approach to promoting the functional and psychological independence of the child with a disability, as well as improving the child’s and family’s quality of life. Physiotherapists, who are known as “movement experts,” play an important part. The goal of this review is to clarify current thinking and physiotherapy practice in the treatment and management of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP).</p
Totally implantable venous access port infection with Listeria monocytogenes: 2 case reports at a tertiary center and literature review
Listeria monocytogenes infection in humans is mostly asymptomatic in immunocompetent patients. It rarely can cause self-limiting febrile gastroenteritis, bacteremia, meningoencephalitis, and maternal-neonatal infections. The latter three manifestations are the most common, especially among immunocompromised patients. We present two cases of Listeria monocytogenes bacteremia in cancer patients, a 79-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman in whom the source of bacteremia was identified to be the implantable venous access port (TIVAP). In both cases, the TIVAP has been removed after “positive control cultures the following readmission to the hospital despite targeted therapy with ampicillin and gentamicin”. Removal of TIVAP was warranted to control the infection. </p

Therapeutic implications in patients with subacute thyroiditis in the SARS-CoV-2 era
The purpose of this mini-review is to provide the latest information on the treatment of Subacute Thyroiditis (SAT) in the era of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). It is well documented that SAT has a significant impact on the quality of life of the patients, so early and proper diagnosis and treatment are necessary in order to reduce or even eliminate the severity of symptoms, frequency of relapses, and permanent hypothyroidism. This requires a multidisciplinary management approach in order to meet patients’ special needs. Solving train scheduling problems as a job shop: A brief review
An interesting practical problem is the single-track train scheduling problem which can be considered a job shop scheduling problem, namely since the sequence of sections is fixed for a train route, it corresponds to fixed machine routes (technological orders) in a job shop scheduling problem. However, for a train scheduling problem, typically some additional constraints such as blocking, sidings, stations with parallel tracks, deadlocks, train length, or headways, etc. have to be considered. The job shop problem has been well investigated in the literature and belongs to the hardest problems in scheduling theory. Regulation of enzymes with identical subunits on the example of Transketolase
The molecule of transketolase is a dimer with structurally and functionally identical subunits. Its active sites are located in the region of intersubunit contact, which has been shown also for other thiamine enzymes. This leads to the reciprocal influence of active sites in the binding of cofactors and during catalysis. In this review, it is shown that the functional non-equivalence of the active sites of transketolase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae is initially formed upon the binding of the first cofactor, a divalent cation, not thiamine diphosphate, as previously thought. An attempt was made to find the reason for the differences between catalytic measurements and crystallographic data on the possible part-of-the-sites reactivity of the functioning of transketolase. At the same time, the difference in the amplitudes of dichroic absorption during the binding of reversibly and irreversibly splitting substrates has nothing to do with the flip-flop mechanism. It was also shown that with an increase in the concentration of substrates, a sharp decrease in activity occurs, which is explained by a switch from the simultaneous binding of the substrate in two active sites to its alternate binding both in one-substrate and two-substrate reactions. This fact could also be the reason for the rejection of the flip-flop mechanism of catalysis by transketolase. The mechanism may be similar to human transketolase, which may have clinical application. </p
