The effect of adsorbent-antioxidant vaginal gel on high-risk HPV clearance

No full text
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of an adsorbent-antioxidant vaginal gel, which contains micronized silicon dioxide and antioxidant deflamin, on high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) clearance within the follow-up periods specified in the guidelines. Methods: In the study, the data of 52 patients infected with hr-HPV using vaginal gel for 3 months and 115 patients who were not using vaginal gel were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic characteristics, Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) at the time of presentation, colposcopy findings, and cervical biopsy results of both groups were investigated. After the LBC and hr-HPV results were evaluated at the end of the control period, both groups were compared in terms of hr-HPV clearance. The level of statistical significance was taken as 0.05 in all tests. Results: The two groups had similar demographic data, cytological findings, colposcopy findings, and cervical biopsy results (p > 0.05). During similar follow-up periods (13.6 ± 3.2 vs. 14.1 ± 3.4 months; p > 0.05), there was no significant difference in terms of hr-HPV clearance (46.2% vs. 51.3%; p > 0.05). Furthermore, the initial and follow-up cytology results of the patients were similar (p > 0.05).Conclusions: A significant effect of the absorbent antioxidant vaginal gel on hr-HPV clearance at approximately 1-year follow-up could not be demonstrated.</p

Claudius Amyand’s hernia: An uncommon form of appendicitis

No full text
Claudius Amyand's hernia is defined by the incarceration of the vermicular appendix through the hernial sac. The first appendectomy was performed in 1735. It is a very rare pathology. Therefore, the frequency of this pathology is not yet established. We report the observation of a 54-year-old patient with an estimated BMI of 25.5 kg: height2 with a simple inguinal hernia that was not followed up and admitted to the emergency room with a painless and impulsive inguinal swelling when coughing. The management consisted of a conditioning and a pre-anesthetic assessment. The intraoperative exploration revealed a right inguinal hernia with caecal and appendicular contents of viable appearance. The procedure included an appendectomy and cure of the hernia using the Lichtenstein technique. The evolution was marked by a resumption of transit 24 hours postoperatively, Appendicitis complicating an Amyand's hernia is a rare pathology that often presents in an atypical clinical picture of an inguinal painful mass without the occlusive syndrome. Its preoperative radiological diagnosis, although exceptional, is of interest given the atypical presentation allowing the elimination of local pathologies that sometimes do not require emergency surgery.</p

Herbo-dentistry- A review

No full text
Phytotherapy is the study of the use of extracts from the natural origin as medicines or health-promoting agents. Plant products have long been used in dentistry as part of various dental materials right from impression materials to eugenol, which forms an integral part of the dental clinic. The use of herbs in dental practice is not limited to only material sciences. A single herb shows a variety of effects like anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal activity, and many more. Hence the incorporation of these herbs in dental practice will prove to be a valuable adjunct to dental treatment.</p

No full text
Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of bibrocathol 2% eye ointment in patients with chronic blepharoconjunctivitis. Materials and methods: This was a multi-center, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, phase III study. Patients with chronic blepharoconjunctivitis were randomized to apply either bibrocathol 2% (n = 100) or placebo (n = 100) three times a day for 14 days. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change from baseline to Day 15(+1 day) in the total score of signs summarizing the investigators’ assessment of the severity of lid oedema, lid erythema, debris, hyperemia, and pouting of Meibomian glands based on slit-lamp examination (modified Intention-to-treat (mITT) set). Safety endpoints included visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and adverse events. Investigators and patients performed an overall assessment of treatment tolerability. Results: On Day 15(+1 day) the least square (LS) mean change from baseline in the total sum score of signs was -8.62 (95% CI: -9.16; -8.08) in the bibrocathol group and -6.00 (95%CI: -6.54; -5.45) in the placebo group. The LS means the difference between treatment groups was statistically significant in favor of bibrocathol (-2.63 [95% CI: -3.36, -1.89], p < 0.001). Bibrocathol was statistically significantly superior to placebo in reduction of the individual ocular signs scores and the patient’s-assessed ocular discomfort severity (p < 0.001). No safety issues were observed concerning visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and the occurrence of adverse events. Conclusions: The study showed superior efficacy of two weeks of treatment with bibrocathol versus placebo in reducing signs and symptoms of chronic blepharoconjunctivitis. Treatment with bibrocathol 2% eye ointment was safe and well-tolerated.</p

Background: Poor oral health among the elderly has been measured in terms of tooth loss, dental caries, high prevalence rates of periodontal disease, xerostomia, and oral precancer/cancer around the world. Aim: The study's goal is to see how posterior occluding pairs and the total number of natural teeth in the mouth affect everyday activity in the elderly. Materials and methods: It was cross-sectional research with 300 participants drawn from a physiotherapy hospital by convenience sampling. The participants were asked about their age, gender, cigarette usage, oral hygiene practices, regularity of use, type of materials utilized, quality of life dental health and other xerostomia symptoms. The oral influences on the daily performance index were used to measure the effects on daily performance. The number of NT and POPs was counted during a clinical evaluation. Results: The studied population's general average age was 63.81 4.50, with no statistically significant differences between men and women. Overall, the research sample had a mean number of NT of 24.76 7.21, with men having 25.90 6.29 and women having 23.32 8.03.Conclusion: The number of NT and POPs was discovered to be important determinants of daily performance among the geriatric population.</p

Inferior dental nerve symptomatology in dental practice needs exclusion of sickle cell disease

No full text
Sickle cell disease is defined as two abnormal beta-globin genes at least one of which is the sickle cell gene denoted by the capital letter S [1]. Other Abnormal beta-globin-genes are denoted either by capital letters of the alphabet C D E G K … [2] or by the name of the place where the abnormal haemoglobin was found, for example, Haemoglobins Korle Bu [3], Osu-Christiansborg [4], K Woolwich [5] all of which are qualitative beta-globin gene abnormalities. There can, however, be a quantitative beta-globin gene abnormality which then is called beta-thalassemia and which I denote as beta-thal. </p

Chemical surface modification of lithium disilicate needles of a silica-based ceramic after HF-etching and ultrasonic bath cleaning: impact on the chemical bonding with silane

No full text
Recommendations to obtain the best bonding to silica-based ceramics are to prepare its surface by hydrofluoric-acid HF etching and regular application of a silane. This study investigated how the HF-etching followed by ultrasonic water bath cleaning or by an additional phosphoric acid treatment impacts the adhesion properties of a resin (G-CEM LinkForce®) with a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS Emax Press, Ivoclar Vivadent). Comparison is based on results obtained with HF etching and direct silane application. After HF-etching, a water ultrasonic bath (4 minutes), and a final air drying, the scratch test critical load increases (+ 46%) thanks to chemical bonding. Additional tests are presented including heat treatments (at 85 °C before and after silanization). If HF-etching is followed by phosphoric acid treatment and drying of silane at 85 °C, scratch test critical load increases (+ 42%) due to mechanical bonding. Similar adhesion properties are obtained with two opposite protocols. </p

Minimal-invasive explantation of sulcus-fixated toric-multifocal additional intraocular lenses despite excellent visual measurements: A case report

No full text
A 40-year-old male patient was referred to our hospital for cataract surgery in both eyes with the explicit wish to get simultaneously rid of his eyeglasses. To allow for postoperative flexibility, we performed a bilateral implantation of a monofocal intraocular ‘standard’ lens in combination with an additional toric-multifocal lens. During the postoperative examinations the patient complained about pronounced halos in twilight and darkness.Visual acuity was excellent for distance, intermediate and near distances. Both IOLs were well centered and showed no tilt or other morphological discrepancies. Despite our extensive treatment efforts, including supportive training for neural adaptation, the patient perceived no signs of improvement. Finally, we had to explant both additional IOLs.The primary corneal incisions were bluntly reopened and the additional IOLs were removed in a minimal traumatic procedure. With the retained IOL in the capsular bag and subsequently ordained progressive eyeglasses the patient obtained full vision at all distances. Our preoperative planning to compensate for presbyopia with a separate IOL, proved to be a good decision. Otherwise, the explantation of a multifocal IOL, ingrown in the capsular bag, could have entailed a number of complications. In such delicate cases, additional IOL may offer a very save and simple alternative.</p

Prospective geo-modeling in cardiac surgery with extra-corporeal circulation-partial assessment at the Lille University Hospital

No full text
Faced with the imminent opening of the new competing “Lens/Bois-Bernard” care unit in the Nord - Pas-de-Calais region (4 million inhabitants), a prospective modeling study was carried out in 1999 in response to a request from the Lille University Hospital (LUH), which sought to estimate the positive or negative impact on its recruitment catchment areas and consequently on its 1996 cardiac surgery activity (comprising 2 care units, i.e., 84 beds). In 1996, only 3 care units with the “Clinique du Bois” in Lille showed our regional undersupply of cardiac surgery compared to the national average of 5.96 [1,2]. </p
