    Enriched model categories and the Dold-Kan correspondence

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics , University of Regina. vi, 98 p.The work we present in this thesis is an application of the monoidal properties of the Dold–Kan correspondence and is constituted of two main parts. In the first one, we observe that by a theorem of Christensen and Hovey, the category of nonnegatively graded chain complexes of left R-modules has a model structure, called the Hurewicz model structure, where the weak equivalences are the chain homotopy equivalences. Hence, the Dold–Kan correspondence induces a model structure on the category of simplicial left R-modules and some properties, notably it is monoidal. In the second part, we observe that changing the enrichment of an enriched, tensored and cotensored category along the Dold–Kan correspondence does not preserve the tensoring nor the cotensoring. Thus, we generalize this observation to any weak monoidal Quillen adjunction and we give an insight of which properties are preserved and which are weakened after changing the enrichment of an enriched model category along a right weak monoidal Quillen adjoint.Studentye

    Machine Learning on simulated forward calorimeter upgrade for JEF

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Physics, University of Regina. xvi, 141 p.This thesis centers around using Machine Learning to distinguish true photons from hadronic split-offs detected by the JEF and GlueX experiments. The FCAL is an electromagnetic detector undergoing an upgrade to its inner region for improving neutral particle identification for the JEF project. Search for exotic η and η′ decays are the focal point JEF experiment as they test the limits of the current Standard Model and provide unique opportunities to search for Dark Matter candidates. The aim of this project is to develop of a shower classification scheme that can confidently separate between true photons and split-offs showers in the FCAL2 detector, as an extension of the study done on the original FCAL. Using simulated ω → π+π−π0 data, multiple Machine Learning models are trained and tested in their separation capabilities. The MLP and BDT models are found to provide robust classification. Their performance is tested in separate areas of the FCAL2, and validated on η → π+π−π0 to ensure application of these models to the JEF. They were both found to have consistently strong separation capabilities in all areas tested. This thesis outlines the motivation for JEF, details the ongoing detector upgrade, and explains the machine learning efforts on improve particle classification for the FCAL2.Studentye

    The quantile analysis of gene expression trajectory and quality control

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics, University of Regina. xvi, 166 p.In Chapter 2 of the thesis, Taguchi’s loss function in the multivariate case is reviewed and a straightforward and practical definition for the cost coefficient matrix is proposed. In order for the quality control process cost more realistic, the expected modified Taguchi’s loss function is applied on Hotelling’s T2 control chart based on a modified economic statistical design, and variable sampling interval (VSI) scheme is adopted. To obtain optimal design parameters, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is utilized. By comparing our approach with previous routine design, it is concluded that redefining the cost factor makes the control system more sensitive to the process mean shift and the cost positive proportional to the process deviation, which is an important characteristic of good economic model. Temporal gene expression data can be used to characterize gene function, and gene expression trajectories showing different trends under various biological conditions appeals great interest of scientists. Most literature analyzed the gene expression trajectory by using traditional mean regression model, which does not perform well in practice due to the presence of non-normal distribution, potential outliers and heteroscedasticity in the data. Chapter 3 proposes a likelihood-based EM algorithm to estimate marginal conditional quantile of multivariate response in linear quantile regression framework, which studies the association between multivariate response and the explanatory variables across different quantiles. We assume that the error term is multivariate asymmetric Laplace distributed and derive the MLE of parameters and implement EM algorithm. The proposed approach is validated through simulation studies, and a real dataset application of 18 genes in P. aeruginosa expressed under 24 biological conditions is analyzed. In Chapter 4, in order to identify the similarity among the 18 genes in P. aeruginosa, the clustering tree for all genes is built by utilizing the Sz´ekely and Rizzo’s hierarchical e-clustering algorithm which is actually an extension of Ward’s minimum variance method. It is based on the empirical cluster distance between population distributions and is able to describe the hierarchical structure of multivariate data and classify the observations into some disjoint clusters. Moreover, similar to the ANOVA F test, the DISCO analysis partitions the total dispersion of observed response into between and within components and determines the test statistic. We conduct the pairwise DISCO tests among all gene expressions for the hypothesis of multi-sample equal distributions. Both methods illustrate that some gene expressions are highly likely from the same population.Studentye

    Perceived intentionality

    A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. 49 p.The intentions we attribute to others effect on how we perceive ambiguous actions. Think of the polarized interpretations of police conduct in the news where the same actions are witnessed by all but how those actions are perceived differs because of varying attributions of intent. The present study explored relationships between social perspective taking and attributions of intent in an online survey administered to ninety-three undergraduate students. Social perspective taking and attributions of intent were assessed in relation to an ambiguous sentence task as a measure of intentionality bias and a series of vignettes as a measure of hostile attributions of intent. It was hypothesized that intentionality bias would be associated with social perspective taking, social perspective taking would be associated with reduced hostile attribution bias, and a relationship between intentionality bias and hostile attribution bias would be mediated by social perspective taking. No relationship was found between intentionality bias and social perspective taking, but an inverse relationship was found between social perspective taking and hostile attribution bias as was found a relationship between intentionality bias and hostile attribution bias albeit not mediated by social perspective taking. These findings provide support for the assumption that intentionality bias and hostile attribution bias are related, and that social perspective taking and hostile attributions of intent are related, albeit negatively

    Provincial and territorial correctional service workers: A Canadian national and jurisdictional assessment of mental health

    Purpose: Canadian correctional workers (CWs) experience substantial challenges with mental health, but prev- alence estimates have been limited across provincial and territorial services. Methods: Participating CWs from all 13 provincial and territorial services (n = 3740) self-selected to complete an online mental health and well-being survey assessing sociodemographic characteristics and symptoms of several mental disorders. Participants worked as correctional officers, community operations (e.g., probation officers), institutional operations (e.g., program officers), community administrators (e.g., managers), institutional or regional headquarters administrators, or institutional management (e.g., superintendents). Results: Across Canada, participants screened positive for one or more mental disorders (57.9%), with several regional differences (ps < 0.05). Correctional officers reported more positive screens than other CWs (ps < 0.05). Years of service and being married were inversely related with mental health (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: The current results suggest provincial and territorial CWs report mental health challenges much more frequently than the diagnostic prevalence for the general public (10.1%) and need additional supports.     Optimize performance of second life batteries in an electric vehicle charging network

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Applied Science in Electronic Systems Engineering, University of Regina. xxiii, 165 p.The ever-increasing concerns of climate change has led to an exponential growth of electric vehicles (EVs) as a way to decarbonize the transportation sector. Although this solution appears promising, this method to reduce transportation emissions does comes with its challenges. Two main criticisms of EVs are the increased electricity demand due to EV charging participation and the accumulation of retired EV batteries. This study aims to provide a solution to both of these concerns. The EV battery can only sustain the vehicle's needs for a limited time. Once the battery reaches a state of health (SOH) that can no longer support the driving requirements of the car, acceleration and duration, it must be retired from the EV. However, these batteries still have much remaining capacity and can be used in less demanding applications where they are referred to as second life batteries (SLBs). This study investigates utilizing SLBs to reduce the peak demand of an EV charging network. A hypothetical charging station in Saskatchewan will be under study as this province operates in a unique, xed-price market which is uncommonly found in previous literature. Since battery degradation is the premise of SLBs, further battery degradation in the form of both calendar and cycle aging will be included in the model. A multi-objective problem is formulated to minimize operational costs of the charging station by balancing battery degradation with the cost of demand, and to achieve optimal performance of the SLB by extending its remaining useful life (RUL). The algorithm updates the battery's SOH daily, and continues to run until the end of life condition of 70% SOH has been reached. The algorithm rst investigated considering only demand in the objective function, followed by the aforementioned multi-objective approach. It was found that considering battery degradation in the objective function allowed for optimal control of the charge and discharge scheduling of the ESS, and by doing so, the RUL of the SLB was signi cantly extended. Next, a new ESS was investigated using the same algorithm. The new ESS was able to generate marginally lower costs and higher savings compared to the SLB, however the SLB still provided signi cantly lower costs, compared to not incorporating ESS at all, at half the investment cost. Various economic metrics, such as total cost of operation, total savings, return on investment, net present value, payback period, and internal rate of return, are used in this study to draw conclusions on SLB use compared to new ESS. The data used in this study was to demonstrate the algorithm and to assess the use of SLBs to new ESS. Further, this study aims to o er a framework for charging station owners to use in assessing the feasibility of SLBs in their respective charging stations.Studentye

    The Bures metric: from positive linear functionals to completely positive maps

Bures in 1969 for normal states of von Neumann algebras to its extension to completely positive maps of C∗-algebras by D. Kretschmann, D. Schlingemann, and R. Werner in 2008. While Bures’ work is rooted in von Neumann algebras, our primary focus will be on unital C∗-algebras. We will explore the definitions and main properties of the Bures metric for positive linear functionals, providing bounds and additional insights into fidelity — a measure closely related to the Bures metric. The thesis extends these concepts to completely bounded maps and completely positive maps, introducing the Bures metric for such mappings and characterizing them in terms of their Stinespring representations. We show that the Bures metric forms a true metric space on the set of positive linear functionals, as well as on the set of completely positive maps that take values on injective C∗-algebras. This offers both theoretical bounds and practical methods to compute distances in these sets.Studentye

    Examining gender bias in juror decision-making on a sexual assault case

    A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. 45 p.To examine gender bias in juror decision-making on a sexual assault case, we had 134 participants read a 216-word vignette depicting an ambiguous sexual assault scenario. Participants were asked to render a dichotomous verdict, rate their confidence in their verdict, and answer a series of questions regarding the situation they read. In addition, participants completed the Gender-Inclusive Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (Urban & Porras Pyland, 2022) and the Punishment Orientation Questionnaire (Yamamoto & Maeder, 2019). What participants did not know was that we manipulated the pronouns of both the defendant and complainant in a 3 (defendant: she, he, they) x 3 (complainant: she, he, they) design. We predicted that there would be a main effect for both defendant and complainant gender on continuous verdict confidence, yet neither effect was supported with a statistically significant result. We also predicted that there would be an interaction effect between defendant and complainant gender on continuous verdict confidence, but this was also not supported. A key issue in this study was the small sample size which significantly reduced power. It is encouraged that future research continues to investigate how non-binary actors are perceived by mock jurors in the context of sexual assault since it is a significant gap in the literature. Finally, future research should also examine different gender combinations when looking at mock juror decision-making in sexual assault cases to ensure all possible gender combinations within a sexual assault case are researched thoroughly to avoid a gender bias in a real courtroom
