Development and application of an analytical framework for mapping probable illegal dumping sites using nighttime light imagery and various remote sensing indices
Illegal dump sites (IDS) pose significant risks to human and the environment and are a pressing issue worldwide. Due to their secretive nature, the detection of IDS is costly and ineffective. In this study, an analytical framework was developed to detect probable IDSs in rural and remote areas using nighttime light (NTL) as a proxy for populated areas. An IDS probability map is produced by aggregation of Landsat-8 and Suomi NPP satellite imagery, multiple-criteria decision-making analysis, and classification tools. Six variables are considered, including modified soil adjusted index, land surface temperature, NTL, highway length, railway length, and the number of landfills. Vulnerability of the inhabitants on reserve lands was assessed using three sample regions. The method appears effective in reducing potential IDSs. Only about 7% of the 31,285 km2 study area are identified as probable IDS, being classified as “very high” and “high”. Landfills without permit are found more effective in lowering IDS occurrence. Spatial distributions of reserve lands and the maturity of highways network nearby may be more important than the length of railways when assessing the inhabitant vulnerability due to IDS. Highway length is the most decisive factor on IDS probability among all classes, with membership grades ranging from 0.99 to 0.55. Land surface temperature appears less effective for the identification of smaller scale IDS. NTL is more prominent on IDS probability in the “very high” class, with a membership grade of 0.80. Entre la precarización de los derechos y la producción de subjetividad política en experiencias de jóvenes trans en México
El objetivo de esta investigación cualitativa fue comprender cómo operan las diferentes prácticas y los discursos que atentan contra la dignidad e integridad de jóvenes trans. Se realizaron grupos focales y entrevistas semiestructuradas a 23 jóvenes trans entre 16 y 29 años en México. A través de un análisis de contenido, se identificaron las prácticas y discursos desde los cuales se atentó contra sus derechos en diferentes dimensiones (identitaria, laboral, educativa, de salud, espacial). Además, se identificaron los actos y recursos que ejercieron para hacer frente a las diversas formas de vulneración, tales como las emociones, las tecnologías de información y comunicación, y el arte. Concluimos que las relaciones de desigualdad social se traducen en precarización de los derechos humanos y, al mismo tiempo, en la base que contribuye a resistir la precarización de los derechos y a la construcción de una subjetividad política trans.Facultyye
Intrusion detection utilizing latent representations & machine learning for network security
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Applied Science in Electronic Systems Engineering, University of Regina. vii, 74 p.Digital devices continue to join our networks. As more devices become connected, and systems grow larger, there is a need for security mechanisms. One method of providing security is to use intrusion detection systems. Intrusion detection systems provide a method of security by utilizing the logs from connected devices to inspect traffic. However, as networks grow, the need for scalable and highly automated systems grows as well. The current state of intrusion detection systems relies on linear and non-linear methods to classify traffic. This traffic is routinely compared as either normal traffic or a variant of an attack. Two of the most popular datasets used in state of the art research in this domain include the NSL-KDD and the UNB15 datasets. Both datasets provide a benchmark in which researchers use intrusion detection methods to classify the traffic. The current state of the art for intrusion detection methods fall short on aspects related to scaling datasets that require labelled data, large complex systems that require powerful compute, and privacy concerns for the data being used when training.
In this Thesis, we present two main non-linear models that address two aspects of the intrusion detection problem. First, we introduce a model that can utilize unlabelled data for training, and compare this to other works. We show that our model is more accurate when taking into account true and false classifications across a multi-classification model. Secondly, we introduce a secondary model that is capable of generating training data, in the case that limited data is available or privacy is a concern. Both models rely on dimensionality reduction as a main tenant, where the input data is reduced to a small latent representation before being trained on. We evaluated the results of our models by comparing our results to existing state of the art research as well as performing benchmark studies with multiple models. We also worked with two different datasets in order to ensure the models developed abstract across different traffic in intrusion detection. The results show that our Conditional Latent Representation Autoencoder (CLRA) model addresses intrusion detection where training data is limited, data is unlabelled, and when the need for generation of new data is required for privacy or other concerns.Studentye
Rated “E” for everyone: are eye trackers accessible for both gamers and non-gamers?
A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. 62 p.Video games are a form of entertainment largely dependent on fine motor skills which are required to use most video game controllers. For individuals with limited mobility, a potential solution is the use of an eye tracker as a video game controller. However, prior gaming experience with traditional game controllers, which individuals with limited mobility might not have, is related to better performance on measures of perception and attention. The present study investigates whether gamers are better at playing an eye tracker video game and rate the usability and enjoyability of an eye tracker as a controller more favourably than non-gamers. Participants (n = 54) played a Super Mario-style video game using an eye tracker as the controller and then completed a Usability and an Enjoyability questionnaire. No differences in performance, usability, or enjoyment were found between gamers and non-gamers. A number of additional finer-grained analyses were performed on aspects of video game experience and performance, usability ratings, and enjoyability ratings. Results of these analyses found that participant motivations for playing video games led to a difference in usability and enjoyability scores, and that playing video games weekly was correlated with lower performance and higher enjoyment. In conclusion, gamers do not have an advantage over non-gamers when using an eye tracker to play video games. These results support eye trackers as an accessible alternative for video game controllers as they are not reliant on gaming experience. However, these results also indicate that eye tracker controllers need further development before they can fully replace a standard video game controller.Studentn

In this thesis, we use various algebraic techniques to prove EKR-type results for finite
transitive groups. In particular, we prove that the action of the symmetric group on the
2-tuples with distinct entries and 2-subsets of have the EKR property, and construct
families of transitive groups that are as far away as possible from having the EKR property.
Then, we show that any transitive subgroup of acting on the non-zero vectors of
has the EKR property.
We also prove that for any odd primes , the size of the largest intersecting set in a
transitive group of degree is at most twice the order of a point stabilizer. In addition,
we show that if is transitive of degree a product of two odd primes, then has the EKR

The power of the therapeutic relationship
A Practicum Report Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Social Work, University of Regina. 57 p.This practicum report outlines my field practicum experience as a counselor with the University of Saskatchewan’s Student Wellness Centre. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my field practicum was completed virtually including all counselling sessions, clinical supervision, professional development, and team meetings. I completed this field practicum in a part time capacity over a period of six months. During my practicum, I provided clinical counselling to 20 students, participated in monthly team meetings, engaged in regular clinical supervision, co-presented two mental health presentations to the U of S community, co-facilitated monthly mental health labs with U of S Peer Support, and engaged in professional development with my colleagues. This report will highlight a number of therapeutic approaches used during my practicum including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and narrative therapy. Case examples will be used to highlight the integration of theory into practice. Notable themes, ethical concerns, and a discussion on the nuances of virtual and telephone counselling will also be included. This report will conclude with some thoughts on both my personal and professional growth and development.Studentye
