Rituals of Survival: The Archetypal Landscape in Canadian Horror Cinema
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies, University of Regina. iv, 93 p.This thesis explores the narrative tropes and patterns which appear in many Canadian Horror films of past and present, as well as the Indigenous motifs they adopt with questionable levels of ethical responsibility. Building on Margaret Atwood’s critical evaluation of Canadian literature, Survival (1972), a connecting line is drawn between the literary Weird Fiction style and the “nature horror” films produced in Canada. This connection is pursued by drawing comparisons between Algernon Blackwood’s novella “The Wendigo” (1910), and Ghostkeeper (1981), a tax-shelter film directed by Jim Makichuk. Explorations of the cultural roots of the Wendigo legend, combined with a deep psychological study of the symbols and patterns in each story, allows for a rich reading of an otherwise unspectacular film from a critical aesthetic perspective. The ostensibly “Canadian” theme of survival in the wild – reflected in the concept of ritual in both its diegetic and non-diegetic forms – is reassessed as a universal quest for wholeness in the second part of the thesis. Through engaging Jungian concepts of Individuation and the Archetypal (Great) Mother, and more specifically the works of Erich Neumann and Marie-Louise von Franz, the labyrinthine horror films What Keeps You Alive (2018, Colin Minihan) and Backcountry (2014, Adam MacDonald) are examined.
In conclusion, the film Rituals (1977, Peter Carter), is analyzed in view of the preceding findings regarding Canadian Horror cinema, its penchant for labyrinthine and ritualistic narratives, and their meaning, by considering – among other things – the process of Individuation. The deeper meaning behind the highly symbolic ritual journey of the characters is discussed in light of the works of Mircea Eliade and Joseph Campbell on comparative religion and mythology. Ultimately, the transformative power of the ritual brings to the fore the long-neglected connection to the Archetypal Feminine.Studentye
De-Colonizing child well-being through Bills C-92 & C15, tipi teachings and calls to action: A study of the Cowessess First Nation Miyo Pimatisowin Act
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Public Policy, University of Regina. vi, 129 p.Recent reports show that First Nations children account for approximately 7.7% of all children in Canada but 52% of children in government care (Government of Canada 2021). For several years, Indigenous peoples and organizations have expressed deep concerns over the disturbing proportion of Indigenous children in care (Blackstock, 2011; Stevenson, 2013).
In 2020, the Cowessess First Nation Miyo Pimatisowin (Cree translation for “Striving for a better life”) Act was established within the parameters of An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children, youth, and families (Bill C-92) to ensure that the next generation of First Nations children are protected from government apprehensions, negative post-care outcomes, and other child well-being challenges (Delorme 2020). The following research question is explored to highlight the self-determination rights, governing strengths, and well-being principles of Cowessess First Nation: How did Cowessess First Nation develop and implement their own child wellbeing policies and programs in a de-colonized, culturally centered way that would yield the best quality of life for their children and families?
The Visiting Way (Keeoukaywin) was used as the method for data collection. Keeoukaywin is an informal and semi-structured method of information gathering where participants answer the researcher’s questions using their own style of narration, teaching, or other styles they are more comfortable with. The researcher followed Cowessess research protocols, OCAP principles, and the University of Regina ethics requirements, to visit with five participants who were integral to the development and/or implementation of the Miyo Pimatisowin Act. This research focused exclusively on Cowessess First Nation. The empirical analysis in this study used Marchildon, Lavoie and Harold’s (2021) decision space framework, Gaventa’s (2006) power framework, and British Columbia’s First Nations Health Authority’s (BC FNHA) governance system to assert that whenever an Indigenous group made more decisions and exerted more power over the health of their people, there were improved overall outcomes for that group. While the three frameworks apply to health, they can be extended to child welfare since both health and child welfare fall within the broader scope of wellness.
Highlighting how a decolonized form of child well-being governance leads to desired well-being outcomes could motivate more experts in fields such as policy development, policy analysis and governance to work with Cowessess towards achieving their child well-being goals. Policy implications from this study include the potential for Cowessess to develop other jurisdictional policies. (E.g. Educational policies, membership policies, business development policies). Highlighting the strengths and opportunities within the Miyo Pimatisowin Act can inspire governments, schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals to partner with Cowessess on various initiatives related to the Act and ultimately improve the well-being of Cowessess children. Policy implications also extend to other First Nations in Canada. First Nations could use knowledge from the development and implementation of the Cowessess Miyo Pimatisowin Act to develop and implement their own child wellbeing Acts.Studentye

Candida albicans Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)-Dependent Lethality and ROS-Independent Hyphal and Biofilm Inhibition by Eugenol and Citral.
Candida albicans is part of the normal human flora but is most frequently isolated as the causative opportunistic pathogen of candidiasis. Plant-based essential oils and their components have been extensively studied as antimicrobials, but their antimicrobial impacts are poorly understood. Phenylpropenoids and monoterpenes, for example, eugenol from clove and citral from lemon grass, are potent antifungals against a wide range of pathogens. We report the cellular response of C. albicans to eugenol and citral, alone and combined, using biochemical and microscopic assays. The MICs of eugenol and citral were 1,000 and 256 μg/mL, respectively, with the two exhibiting additive effects based on a fractional inhibitory concentration index of 0.83 ± 0.14. High concentrations of eugenol caused membrane damage, oxidative stress, vacuole segregation, microtubule dysfunction and cell cycle arrest at the G1/S phase, and while citral had similar impacts, they were reactive oxygen species (ROS) independent. At sublethal concentrations (1/2 to 1/4 MIC), both oils disrupted microtubules and hyphal and biofilm formation in an ROS-independent manner. While both compounds disrupt the cell membrane, eugenol had a greater impact on membrane dysfunction. This study shows that eugenol and citral can induce vacuole and microtubule dysfunction, along with the inhibition of hyphal and biofilm formation.This study was supported by Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC; 06649-2018) and Canada Foundation for Innovation grants to T.E.S.D. Developing Canadian solid waste management system at a regional level with the integration of remote sensing satellite imagery, machine learning tools, and GIS network analysis
A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in *, University of Regina. xviii, 237 p.Current thesis indicates the outcomes of developing a series of data-driven researches aggregating remote sensing satellite imagery, machine learning tools, and GIS network analysis. In the first part of this study, a GIS-Based method is developed that considers spatial, environmental, and economic constraints using study regions derived from NTL imagery for a 40-km buffer around Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Results showed that road network stands as the most decisive factor for detecting suitable sites for landfills followed by protected areas. LST and NDVI fluctuations in the vicinity of 8 Canadian engineered landfills were evaluated to identify biothermal zones and environmental footprints of landfills in the second part of the study. Decreasing LST trend is found for forest lands near the landfills in 5 out of 7 landfills. In addition, monitoring LST changes were appeared more appropriate for identifying bio-thermal zones in landfills. Third part of the study were dedicated to develop a RF algorithm as a machine learning tool to identify landfill emission hotspots. It is believed that the incorporation of RF algorithm with remote sensing imagery can increase the spatial and temporal resolution for monitoring purposes. Results showed that the predicted LST, as a proxy for methane hotspots, agrees well with LST estimated from the conventional approach using Landsat-8 imagery, with R> 0.96. NTL imagery, vectors files, and MCDM tools for identification of the potential IDS in vulnerability due to IDS. Highway length is found as the most decisive factor on IDS probability among all classes, with membership grades ranging from 0.99 to 0.55. Fifth part of the study were dedicated to develop an analytical framework to optimize population coverage by landfills using network analysis and satellite imagery. Results showed that landfill regionalization index, (an indicator for covered population centers), is generally increased in proposed method compared to the status quo using two different truck travel time. The separation distance between the generation and disposal sites and truck capacity appears not a decisive factor in the optimization process. Sixth part of the study is developed as a continuation of the previous part with different optimization objectives focusing on maximizing accessibility of landfills (ACC) and minimizing the number of landfills (LMI). The results suggest that the accessibility was able to be improved between 15.4 and 794.7%, and the optimization methods were always effective in providing higher accessibility to residents. Improvements in the LMI yielded less improvement, ranging from -13.9% to 422.2%. Furthermore, correlation analysis showed that road length is one of the most important optimization parameters, and an intensified road network is more efficient. This finding may impact Indigenous communities who suffer from a lack of road network.
