    Characterizing the effect of solar energy in thermal enhanced oil recovery - case study in Saskatoon

XVI, 92 p.Enhanced oil recovery methods are used in every region of the world to retrieve a portion of the reservoir. the steam injection method is considered one of the most successful methods of increasing enhanced oil recovery in heavy or viscous oil reservoirs. In the past, fossil fuels were the primary source of steam production which was required to be injected into the reservoir. The generation of steam using solar energy is an alternative, innovative, and environmentally friendly approach that can replace conventional methods. In this research, Meteonorm software was used to gather historical environmental data for Saskatoon in TMY2 (second edition of the typical meteorological year) format. TRNSYS software V16.0, created by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was then used to simulate a steam injection cycle in order to determine the required energy and gas consumption for each hour of the year. TRNSYS also simulates the flat-plate collector and Compound parabolic concentrator cycles (CPC). The outcomes of cycles are then compared throughout the course of a year, along with the three warmest months (June, July, and August). Additionally, information is given about how the collector slope affects Saskatoon's gas use. According to the findings, utilizing a Flat-plate collector (FP) resulted in an annual energy savings of 4.27 percent and a gas less consumption of 158207 cubic meters per year. Also, The use of a Compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) collector resulted in a yearly reduction in energy consumption of 9.69 percent and a reduction in gas consumption of 358524 cubic meters on an annual basis. During the months of June, July, and August about 10.06 percent gas savings which are equal to 21479 cubic meters for the FP collector was observed. In the same period, 17.00 percent gas savings which are equal to 39958 cubic meters for the CPC collector was calculated. At 40 degrees and subsequently 44 degrees, the boiler’s minimal energy requirement for CPC, while at 18 degrees is the boiler’s minimal energy requirement for Fa Flat-plate collector. Based on the collector slope, the efficiency is changed. When the collector slope is less than 85-degree, gas usage is less in CPC collector than FP.     A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. 41 p.Retrieval-Induced Forgetting (RIF) is a cognitive phenomenon in which successful remembering of a strengthened memory item (Rp+) results in suppression and forgetting of related memory items (Rp-) compared to unpracticed memory items (Nrp) (Anderson, Bjork, & Bjork, 1994). Current research suggests that RIF is associated to a positivity bias of memory, where greater retrieval-induced forgetting effects result in remembering the past and imagining the future more positively (Giebl et al., 2016; Storm & Jobe, 2012). This study used the Retrieval Practice Paradigm to examine the dimensions and boundaries of the positivity bias correlation. Using the Life Orientation Test Revised (LOT-R) scale and the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale (TSWLS), RIF effects were able to test positivity and optimism by focusing on a broader episodic memory perspective, while also targeting specific episodic memory through event expectancies and outcomes (i.e., GPA estimations and likelihood of future event outcomes). We focused our analyses on individuals who demonstrated RIF. Results found no significant main effects of RIF among all participants, however a small portion of participants displayed stronger individual RIF effects. Effect sizes found no relationships between the optimism and positivity measures. We conclude with a discussion on methodology, retrieval time responses, and characteristics of RIF with broad versus specific memory. As well, we examine coping mechanisms of memory, and the role present situation influences perspective of past and future.Studentn

    Application of artificial intelligence to variable rate technology in agriculture

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Electronic Systems Engineering, University of Regina. xvii, 192 p.Variable Rate Application (VRA) plays a pivotal role in enhancing agricultural profitability by optimizing the use of resources and promoting consistent crop growth. This also helps mitigate the negative environmental impact of farming practices. However, the implementation of VRA is heavily reliant on data. An effective VRA prescription involves an agronomist’s in-depth knowledge of the soil and crop conditions within Homogenized Management Zones (HMZs). Certain soil attributes like electrical conductivity, elevation, and soil moisture are measured using proximal sensors installed on farm machinery. However, other soil properties like soil texture and Soil Organic Matter (SOM) measurements require soil sampling and laboratorybased testing. Similarly, crop and weed information is gathered via manual scouting. The collected SOM, soil texture, and crop information based on limited sampling may not be representative of whole field conditions resulting in low spatio-temporal resolution of information. Our research seeks to bridge these gaps by proposing costeffective and scalable solutions that improve spatio-temporal resolution. We suggest installing RGB sensors on farm machinery to monitor crop and weed growth, categorize soil texture, and estimate SOM. This high spatio-temporal information gathered is subsequently processed to investigate if improved HMZs can be identified. We develop crop and weed-specific semantic segmentation methods to detect, localize and quantify crops/weeds, yielding a mean Intersection Over Union (mIOU) up to 83%. These semantic segmentation models are customized to handle agricultural image data, minimizing memory usage and computational costs during training and inference. Through this adaptation, we observe a 6% performance improvement in crop and weed semantic segmentation. The efficiency of binary semantic segmentation models is further enhanced by up to 12% using ensemble learning methods. We recognize the strong correlation between soil properties and crop/weed densities and thus use this relationship to our advantage. We train machine learning models to predict crop and weed densities based on soil properties and satellite data. To accurately predict SOM and soil texture from RGB images, we employ a hybrid approach that combines deep learning and conventional image-processing techniques to overcome the challenges posed by uncontrolled field conditions data. Lastly, we explore the potential for identifying HMZs based on resultant high-resolution crop and soil information.     Knowledge translation pain management initiatives for older adults and other relevant knowledge users: a systematic review

Initiatives to increase knowledge about pain assessment and subsequent management are crucial to improving quality of life. Knowledge translation (KT) studies focused on delivering pain management education to older adults and relevant knowledge users are available in the literature. However, KT program formats and outcomes vary greatly, presenting a need to assess and comprehensively report on the current literature for older adult pain management. KT programs targeted towards older adults, healthcare professionals, and informal caregivers were examined in this systematic review. CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, and Web of Science were searched from inception to July 2022. Search results were organized in Covidence (2022). From an initial 18,143 search results, 146 studies were retained for inclusion. Studies varied widely in focus and format deliveries, and a majority presented with significant risk of bias. Most programs were classified as knowledge mobilization studies without an implementation component. Across all studies, satisfaction and suitability of education were most commonly assessed. Patient outcomes, however, were underemphasized in the literature. Patient and clinical outcomes must be a focus of future research to fully conceptualize success of KT for older adult patients. Without implementation plans, disseminated knowledge does not effectively translate to practice. Knowledge mobilization without implementation is discouraged in future studies.Studentn

    Carbon capture, utlization, and storage supply chain risk management framework development

Because everyone wants to stop global warming by reducing CO2 emissions, CCUS is an important and emerging technology that can help slow down climate change, lower emissions in many areas, and support the move to a sustainable and carbon-neutral future. As CCUS technology and its adaptation increases, it is very important to pay attention to the CCUS risks from the supply chain (SC) point of view. The ultimate goal of this study is to is to identify CCUS supply chain risks and develop a framework that provides a structured approach to ensure safe and reliable CCUS supply chain. This study develops a complete CCUS SC risk management framework including CCUS SC functions, risks and risk management strategies. Therefore, this study analyzes the literature related to SC of different sectors and identifies the SC risks which is the foundation for CCUS SC risks identification. This study depicts that there is no research article that provides a comprehensive CCUS SC risks as well as risk management framework that connects with risk management strategies. Moreover, the framework provides a guideline for future research which enrich the CCUS supply chain risk management system as well as fight against the climate change. This study has deployed Delphi technique to validate the risks that have been identified from the literature. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) has been used to identify the communalities of the risks related to the CCUS SC functions. At the same time, 44 risk management strategies have been developed from the supply chain risk management literature in relation with the CCUS SC risks. Finally, the risk management framework has been developed in CCUS SC context which is the main objective of this study. This is the first risk management framework in CCUS SC context which connects the CCUS SC functions, risks, and strategies. This framework provides a comprehensive guideline for the management to develop sustainable roadmaps in CCUS SC management systems. Moreover, this framework helps to prevent the environment and promotes further research in CCUS risk management systems.     An exploration of school-based sexual abuse prevention programming: No Is a Full Sentence program evaluation

    A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Social Work in Social Work, University of Regina. x, 121 p.Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global issue with potentially long-lasting and severe consequences. In response, school-based prevention programs have been developed and proven to be effective at enhancing child knowledge of CSA concepts. The Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre’s (SSAIC) new program, “No Is a Full Sentence” (NIAFS), provides grade eight students in both Greater Catholic and Public-School Divisions in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with foundational and complementary education about CSA concepts, healthy relationships, boundaries, bodily autonomy, understanding sexual violence, and more. This thesis research used a program evaluation framework and program fidelity principles to conduct an evaluation of NIAFS implementation. Semi-structed interviews were conducted with seven participants considered key figures in program development and/or delivery: five SSAIC staff members responsible for program development, implementation, and facilitation; and two teachers who assisted in program facilitation. Thematic analysis led to the construction of four main themes: (1) compromise is required in a number of ways for successful program delivery; (2) facilitators must be attuned to the knowledge, needs, and energy of the classroom organism; (3) facilitators must resonate with the content being shared for its effective delivery; and (4) sexual education isn’t 'just about sex' – it is about planting the seeds required to make change through education. This research looked deeper into the nuances of program delivery in the youth sexual education arena, triangulating findings from SSAIC's post-program satisfaction survey findings, which revealed very positive feedback. Recommendations for future NIAFS delivery, social work practice, and research are provided.Studentye

    Effects of physical and non-physical extracurricular activities on the self-concept of adolescents

    A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. 22 p.Extracurricular activities (ECAs) are an integral part of adolescent development and have been linked to positive outcomes such as increased self-concept, academic performance, and social well-being. Although much research has been conducted in this area, few studies have explored the nuances of different types of ECAs, and even fewer have explored these effects in a Canadian population. Furthermore, very little is known about how immigrants are impacted by these activities and what benefits they may gain from them. To address this gap in the literature, this study uses data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (2019) to analyze the impact that different extracurricular activities have on self-concept among adolescents (12 - 17 years) in Canada and how these effects differ between immigrant and non-immigrant populations. Our results demonstrate a positive relationship between participation in ECAs and self-concept, while also revealing disparities in ECA participation between immigrant and non-immigrant youth. Despite some limitations, such as the lack of a concrete self-concept measure within the CHSCY dataset and small effect sizes, this research provides valuable insights into the impact of ECAs on adolescent self-concept in the general Canadian population and has implications for educators, community organizers, and policymakers in devising strategies to promote inclusive and accessible extracurricular opportunities for all young Canadians.Studentn

    Oblivious and uninformed: the role of overconfidence in personal health decision-making

    A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, University of Regina. vii, 44 p.There is considerable variability in how individuals choose to manage their health, with much of society failing to engage in protective behaviours and depending upon unreliable sources of health information, plausibly due to overconfidence in one’s knowledge and abilities. Previous research suggests that overconfidence may be associated with poor decision-making and epistemically suspect belief systems, as it facilitates overreliance on personal beliefs and failure to assess new information objectively; however, little empirical research has assessed how this impacts health decisions. In the present study, participants (n = 252) completed questionnaires and tasks assessing intellectual humility, generalized overconfidence, overclaiming, and health-related behaviours and attitudes. As secondary analyses, participants completed a complementary and alternative medicine and health anxiety scale. Pearson correlations and multiple linear regressions revealed that generalized overconfidence and overclaiming were not significantly related to the primary health-related measures. Participants low in intellectual humility displayed low expert trust and were more likely to self-diagnose; however, no overconfidence measures were significantly related to healthy lifestyle behaviours. Participants who preferred alternative medicine over conventional medicine were more likely to overclaim, less likely to trust experts, and possessed more self-diagnosis attitudes, but this was not associated with healthy lifestyle behaviours. Similarly, we found that participants high in health anxiety exhibited low intellectual humility, low expert trust and low healthy behaviour engagement, and held more positive attitudes towards self-diagnosis. These findings suggest that intellectual humility informs attitudes towards medical professionals and self-diagnosis and thus may influence subsequent behaviours and beliefs regarding personal health.Studentn
