    Hidden Patterns of Corporate Reputation in Sustainable Supply Chains: A Switching Perspective

    The assessment of sustainability within supply chains has become essential for performance measurement and risk mitigation. While prior research emphasizes transparency in social and environmental impacts, a more comprehensive approach is needed to balance economic, social, and environmental objectives. This study examines corporate reputation within supply chains as an outcome of sustainability performance, assessed through Triple Bottom Line (TBL) indicators. Using a hidden Markov switching decision tree model, we identify latent states that serve as proxies for corporate reputation, modeled through state-dependent tree structures. Our findings reveal two distinct reputation states: one prioritizing environmental and financial factors, and another emphasizing technological innovation and sustainability

    Sustainable and innovative biological control strategies against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola and Xanthomonas spp. affecting vegetable crops: a review

    Genera Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas include bacterial species that are etiological agents of several diseases of major vegetable crops, such as tomato, pepper, bean, cabbage and cauliflower. The bacterial pathogens of those genera may cause severe crop damage, leading to symptoms like leaf spots, wilting, blights, and rotting. These plant pathogens can affect propagation materials and spread rapidly through plant tissues, contaminated soils, or water sources, making them challenging to control using conventional chemical products alone. Biopesticides, such as essential oils (EOs), are nowadays studied, tested and formulated by employing nano- and micro-technologies as innovative biological control strategies to obtain more sustainable products using less heavy metal ions. Moreover, there is a growing interest in exploring new biological control agents (BCAs), such as antagonistic bacterial and fungal species or bacteriophages and understanding their ecology and biological mechanisms to control bacterial phytopathogens. These include direct competition for nutrients, production of antimicrobial compounds, quorum quenching and indirect induction of systemic resistance. Optimisation of the biocontrol potential goes through the development of nanoparticle-based formulations and new methods for field application, from foliar sprays to seed coatings and root inoculation, aimed to improve microbial stability, shelf life, controlled release and field performance. Overall, the use of biological control in horticultural crops is an area of research that continues to advance and shows promising potential. This review aims to provide an in-depth exploration of commercially accessible biocontrol solutions and innovative biocontrol strategies, with a specific focus on the management of bacterial diseases in vegetable crops caused by Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas species. In this article, we highlighted the advancements in the development and use of EOs and other BCAs, emphasizing their potential or shortcomings for sustainable disease management. Indeed, despite the reduced dependence on synthetic pesticides and enhanced crop productivity, variable regulatory frameworks, compatibility among different BCAs, and consistent performance under field conditions are among the current challenges to their commercialization and use. The review seeks to contribute valuable insights into the evolving landscape of biocontrol in vegetable crops and to provide guidance for more effective and eco-friendly solutions against plant bacterial diseases

    “Branch retinal artery occlusion in a sixteen-year-old girl with patent foramen ovale”

    Introduction: The etiology and risk factors of the extremely rare retinal artery occlusion (RAO) in pediatric patients are poorly understood. We report a case of transient branch RAO (BRAO) patent foramen ovale (PFO)-related left circulation thromboembolism. Observations: A healthy sixteen-year-old female presented with painless decreased vision in her left eye. Examinations revealed ischemic edema of a localized sector of the macular area and delayed artero-venous blood transit. Following neurological, cardiological and genetic examinations, a diagnosis and subsequent treatment for PFO were undertaken. Conclusions and importance: This rare case shows that a PFO should be always considered as a potential etiology of RAO in young patients, thus highlighting the importance of investigating all potential sources of embolisms to prevent further ischemic events

    Deep disagreements and the genealogical challenge

    This paper looks at the so-called "genealogical challenge", encapsulated in the "you just believe that because & mldr;" (YJBTB) schema, through the lens of hinge epistemology. It is claimed that hinges are typically believed just because one has been brought up to believe them (1). Yet, due to their extreme variability, it is not always the case that hinges are not rationally held, while fitting into the YJBTB schema. In particular, they are rationally held when either different (de facto empirical) hinges are taken for granted merely because of one's position in history, or else when (de jure) hinges, constitutive of epistemic rationality, are plugged into the YJBTB schema. By contrast, they are not rationally held when different hinges are taken for granted while aware of the fact that one's reasons for them are either question-begging or no stronger than the ones in favor of incompatible ones ( 3-4). These would all be cases of "deep disagreement" - that is, disagreement that depends on different and incompatible hinges, which prevent parties from utilizing a common epistemic method or practice to rationally resolve the disagreement. Finally, we look at the possible extension of this framework to what may be regarded as religious and moral hinges. It is claimed that, depending on the hinge in question, these disagreements may (or may not) be "deep" (5). Hence, looking at the genealogical challenge through the lens of hinge epistemology helps elucidate its nature, its epistemic significance and its scope

    Reconstructing life history and ancestry from poorly preserved skeletal remains: A bioanthropological study of a Copper Age infant from Faenza (RA, Italy)

    The poor preservation of archaeological skeletal remains, particularly those of infants, can result in partial representations of populations and significantly limit our understanding of the development and life of their infant segment. This study investigates the potential of combining dental histology, high spatial resolution biogeochemistry, radiocarbon dating, palaeoproteomic and ancient DNA (aDNA) analyses alongside traditional osteological methods to reconstruct the biological profile and life history of the heavily degraded skeletal remains of an infant from Faenza, Italy. Severe skeletal degradation left only dental crowns and small osseous fragments, restricting traditional osteological analysis to an estimation of the age at death. Histological analysis of two dental specimens, a deciduous upper right first molar and a permanent lower right first molar, provided detailed insights into the infant's development, ultimately refining the age at death at approximately 17 months. Biogeochemical analysis using Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) revealed pronounced diagenetic alterations masking the original biogenic signal. Proteomic analysis of enamel peptides and genomic analysis of the osseous fragments identified the infant's sex as male. Genomic analysis, facilitated by a sufficient quantity of endogenous aDNA, enabled the reconstruction of the mitochondrial genome, providing valuable insights into the matrilineal ancestry of the individual and identifying an uncommon mtDNA haplogroup for the Eneolithic period in the Italian peninsula. Despite the limited preservation of the skeletal elements, the combined application of advanced bioanthropological techniques demonstrated the substantial informative potential inherent in even a few preserved anatomical elements. This study underscores the critical value of multidisciplinary approaches in overcoming the challenges posed by highly degraded remains, revealing insights that would otherwise remain inaccessible

    Correlating Optical Coherence Tomography and Other Noninvasive Imaging Features With Atrophic and Hypertrophic Skin Photoaging

    Background: According to morphological and clinical differences, atrophic (AP) and hypertrophic (HP) skin photoaging types have been reported. The current study examines the correlation between optical coherence tomography (OCT) and dynamic-OCT (D-OCT) features in subjects with skin photoaging types classified as AP, HP, or controls. Furthermore, we aim to define the correlations between OCT/D-OCT and other noninvasive skin imaging features (standardized clinical photography and reflectance confocal microscopy [RCM]). Methods: We explored the correlations between skin photoaging types, OCT/D-OCT, and noninvasive skin imaging features. A total of 58 patients were clinically classified as AP (n = 17), HP (n = 24), or controls (n = 17). Results: AP subjects showed higher D-OCT vessel assets and vessel densities (p < 0.05) compared to HP and control subjects. A significant correlation was established between standardized clinical evidence of wrinkles and RCM collagen scores. Dermal variations in HP subjects represent the underlying substrate of wrinkles. Conclusions: Despite the limited cohort, these results contribute to the current knowledge of morphologic differences between AP and HP subjects. Treatment should consider morphologic changes according to skin photoaging phenotypes for optimal personalized medicine
