From ELIZA to Conversational AI: Can a Chatbot Develop Emotions? Her as a Case Study
Get PDFThe rapid evolution of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked an ongoing debate regarding its ability to replicate, or even experience, human emotions. While early conversational chatbots such as Joseph Weizenbaum’s ELIZA (1966) relied on simple pattern recognition to create the illusion of understanding, modern AI systems like ChatGPT generate highly sophisticated, contextually appropriate responses that can convincingly mimic emotional engagement. This paper draws upon cinematic reflections, such as Spike Jonze’s Her (2013), to offer a critical examination of the question of whether AI is capable of genuine emotional experience or merely simulating such experiences through advanced language modelling. Utilising a theoretical framework grounded in philosophy, psychology and communication studies, this research critically assessesvAI’s capacity for emotional experience, positing that while chatbots may convincingly simulate humanvemotional expression, they lack the subjective element that is integral to genuine emotional experience. Thisvdistinction, nowadays, has profound implications for human-AI interaction, ethics, and our understanding of artificial intelligence’s humanity in contemporary society
Elderly labor supply, endogenous grandparental childcare, and fertility in an OLG model
Get PDFThis paper explores how grandparental childcare influences fertility decisions, elderly labor supply, and economic development. We model the time elderly individuals allocate between work and caring for grandchildren. In high-income countries, higher wages lead to increased investments in children’s education and human capital. Interestingly, the decision to work in old age does not depend on economic development but on wage dynamics. Specifically, when the effective wage grows rapidly, grandparents are more likely
to work, even while caring for grandchildren. These findings highlight the importance of intergenerational time transfers in shaping economic outcomes. Future research could explore the long-term effects of aging populations on labor markets and family dynamics

This article examines how various visual media were used to advance Italy's imperial agenda, drawing on both recent scholarship and original research. Introducing the concept of transmediality and its methodological importance for analyzing colonial cultural and visual practices, the article presents the case of Vittorio Tedesco Zammarano-an explorer, hunter, filmmaker, and writer active in Italian Somalia. Through a close examination of the technologies and cultural practices, this study reflects on how colonial fantasies, desires, and epistemes-particularly those related to hunting and safari-were intertwined with Fascist Italy's colonial ambitions, highlighting broader trans-imperial connections
Embodiment e cinestesie corporee: l’esperienza del Sé in movimento in contesti d’apprendimento.
Get PDFLa presente tesi di dottorato, dedicata allo studio delle attività di movimento cinestetico come strumento per migliorare le pratiche didattiche, è parte integrante del programma scientifico seguito nel corso triennale di dottorato in Formazione, Patrimonio culturale e Territori. La ricerca si concentra sullo sviluppo delle abilità motorie di base e sul ruolo della corporeità nel processo di crescita, con particolare attenzione al movimento espressivo e alla sua applicazione pratica nel contesto motorio, con un occhio di riguardo alla trasferibilità dei risultati anche in ottica inclusiva. La tesi si suddivide in due parti, la prima è dedicata al Framework storico normativo, e agli aspetti epistemologici e ontologici della ricerca, la seconda invece, alla ricerca. È stata avviata una ricerca multi-metodo, derivante da ambiti disciplinari differenti, basata su approcci multimodali con controlli incrociati e diversificate procedure di raccolta dati, circa l’esame delle medesime questioni. La ricerca ha tenuto conto solo delle differenze osservabili e degli effetti tendenziali della metodologia di insegnamento sperimentale. Si è trattato, dunque, di una ricerca relativa all’azione formativa che a partire dall’Evidence based non rinnegasse inferenze logiche, ma si supportasse con azioni didattiche dall’evidenza empirica. L’analisi dei dati e lo studio dei test effettuati ha evidenziato che l’attività cinestetica rappresenta un processo apprenditivo particolarmente valido nell’ambito educativo, per ridisegnare una moderna pedagogia del corpo e del movimento.This doctoral dissertation, dedicated to the study of kinaesthetic movement activities as a tool for improving teaching practices, is an integral part of the scientific program followed in the three-year doctoral course in Education, Cultural Heritage and Territories. The research focuses on the development of basic motor skills and the role of corporeity in the growth process, with a focus on expressive movement and its practical application in the motor context, with an eye on the transferability of the results also from an inclusive perspective. The thesis is divided into two parts, the first is focused to the normative historical framework, and the epistemological and ontological aspects of the research, and the second, to the research. A multi-method research was undertaken, derived from different disciplinary fields, based on multi-modal approaches with cross-checks and diverse data collection procedures, about the examination of the same issues. The research took into account only the observable differences and tendency effects of experimental teaching methodology. It was, therefore, a research related to educational action that from Evidence based did not disavow logical inferences, but supported itself with teaching actions from empirical evidence. The analysis of the data and the study of the tests carried out showed that kinaesthetic activity represents a particularly valid learning process in the educational sphere, to redesign a modern pedagogy of the body and movement

The volume, which brings together contributions from Asian and European scholars, emphasizes contextual understanding of environmental issues, where scientific knowledge, indigenous knowledge, and political actions interact and shape each other in complex ways. By exploring the global history of environmental awareness, scholars can discover how different societies have imagined and stabilized their relationships with the environment. This includes examining how scientific concepts, political actions, and cultural symbols have shaped environmental policies and public perceptions. The second key theme debated is the way in which different actors interact during the process of “world creation”: the essays here published highlight how scientists play a crucial role in generating and disseminating knowledge on environmental issues, providing the empirical basis to understand environmental changes and their impacts
God and Human Being. An Ellipse in Emmanuel Falque’s Work
No full textEmmanuel Falque’s work could be defined by the biblical episode of Jacob wrestling with the angel on the banks of the Jabbok. Falque himself confirms this interpretation when, in “Le combat amoureux”, he comments on Eugène Delacroix’s painting Jacob’s Struggle with the Angel and declares that his work is nothing other than this hand-to-hand combat. Falque’s work, in other words, sketches an ellipse in which two irreducibles, i.e., God and human beings, can recognize each other in mutual union, without one being assimilated into the other, and indeed still remaining in a loving struggle (combat amoureux). These two irreducibles, that are held together as the two foci of the ellipse are, also appear in a Cartesian expression that Falque likes to quote and which closes “Crossing the Rubicon: The Borderlands of Philosophy and Theology”, the well-known Larvatus prodeo, which he transforms into Larvatus pro Deo. If larvatus in Latin means covering one’s face with a mask, Falque instead removes this mask by doing philosophy bare-faced or with the face uncovered, an expression that opens his book “Le combat amoureux”. This texte means to show how this mask is definitely removed

No full textIn addressing the topic of “Metaphysics and Deconstruction”, the article begins
by asking, “How does deconstruction still remain relevant today?”, before exploring the concepts of deconstruction and “remain” in Derrida’s work. It then considers how metaphysics can be deconstructed by interpreting the complement of specification as both as objective and subjective genitive. According to the objective genitive, deconstruction destroyed metaphysics to take its place. However, the subjective genitive suggests that metaphysics has not ceased deconstructing itself by drawing on the irresolvable contradictions that gave rise to it. This enables metaphysics to both contradict and reformulate itself. This is the meaning the article proposes to understand the “remain of metaphysics”, suggesting to grasp this “remain” in the never-ending opening of metaphysics to the possibility of welcoming the contradiction
established by the event that gave rise to it – and to which deconstruction relentlessly opens its issues
