Landolfo Rufolo in the Age of Social Media: Sailing Different Seas Between Chaos and Compassion

    No full text
This proposal offers a contemporary reinterpretation of Boccaccio's tale of Landolfo Rufolo (Decameron II.4), transposing the original's metaphorical sea of the Mediterranean into the chaotic, unpredictable expanse of the digital era. Landolfo’s tale, marked by loss, survival, and redemption, resonates with the digital age’s potential to turn setbacks into opportunities, highlighting the enduring human capacity for resilience. Central to this narrative of recovery is the figure of the compassionate woman who rescues Landolfo. Her quiet, selfless act underscores the potential for humanity and virtue within systems rife with instability and competition. In the context of social media, she symbolizes the pivotal role of empathy and solidarity, offering a counterbalance to the chaos of online spaces. Her intervention reminds us of the importance of individual agency in fostering meaningful connections and mitigating the isolating effects of modern digital life. By employing the sea as a metaphor, this proposal aims to explore how unpleasant events—both in Boccaccio's time and in our own—can lead to growth, transformation, and unexpected bonds. The guiding question is: in an age of digital tumult, what lessons can Boccaccio's tale teach us about navigating chaos and embracing the redemptive power of compassion

Theories of Justice, Respect, and Fraternity

Philosophical reflection on theories of justice, especially liberal-egalitarian ones, is often accused of dwelling exclusively on the distributive and procedural aspects of justice and on resting upon an overly abstract and disembedded idea of the individual. In my contribution I will argue that this critique is unfounded and will show – by highlighting elements of John Rawls’s thought that are frequently overlooked – that a socio-relational and even communitarian dimension can be discerned, which is fully consistent with the original spirit of egalitarian liberalism. In order to support my claim, I will show that respect for persons, both as moral equals and as particular individuals, is central to this dimension and finds a central ground in fraternity

Italiano L2 e digital literacy: uno studio di caso con migranti adulti debolmente scolarizzati

    No full text
Digital skills are a fundamental part of literacy and social inclusion processes, especially for those adult migrants with emergent literacy (LESLLA learners) for whom the integrated development of L2 literacy and basic digital skills are crucial. Migrant learners often rely on their smartphones to compensate for limited L2 comprehension and/or reading-writing skills, even though they are not always aware of how to make it an effective aid for L2 learning. The paper proposes a reflection on this issue by discussing the data collected in some Italian L2 pilot courses, in which digital tools were used to enhance adult migrants’ learning strategies, social autonomy and more motivating and collaborative learning of the target language. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data. The findings highlight that the integration of digital literacy into L2 learning may prove to be particularly effective in fostering a sense of well-being and participation among LESLLA learners, while also supporting the development of both direct and indirect language learning strategies
