No full textThe relational dimension of schooling has been identified as an important aspect of educational professionals’ everyday practices, yet little is known about how mainstream schools go about the day-to-day act of fostering positive and trusting relationships with children and parents. This paper draws on data generated from a case study involving two schools in Wales which sought to understand how schools foster positive relationships with parents and children. Interviews and focus groups with staff, parents and pupils at two community focused schools in Wales revealed that an ethic of care was crucial to the formation of quality trusting relationships between staff, parents and pupils. It will be argued that the caring relationships which school staff grafted with parents and pupils through day-to-day acts were inextricably bound with their wider social contexts and location in areas of significant socio-economic disadvantage. In this sense, these schools’ wider social contexts informed how they interpreted and enacted policy agendas around both academic performance and community schooling. It is therefore suggested that the fostering of a relational dimension of schooling is crucial to the development of a community focused schools’ agenda in Wales

Factors of Employee Productivity Leading to Organisational Transformation: A Case Study of Axiata Sdn Bhd
Get PDFAxiata has opted to embark on a digital transformation initiative with the aim of attaining a position of preeminence within the telecoms sector in Asia. Despite the company's historically effective adherence to established standards, regulations, and processes, there has been an abrupt decline in the quality of outcomes observed in recent times. The current situation is rapidly deteriorating, characterised by a decrease in dividends and significant transformations taking place in both the external and internal elements. Consequently, it is imperative for the organisation to promptly take action in order to effectively mitigate the issue. Axiata's objectives, encompassing the establishment of operational excellence, innovation superiority, and procedural efficiency, have steered the firm towards its current trajectory of transformation. This progress has been achieved through the implementation of the triple core strategy. Through the utilisation of tailor-made technological solutions aimed at enhancing human capabilities and facilitating organisational change, this study successfully identified the barriers impeding employees' optimal productivity levels. The central argument of this study posits that the identification, examination, and elimination of productivity gaps are crucial for guiding organisational change and achieving desired outcomes through the transformation of human resources. As a consequence of this, the primary objectives of this research are to investigate the current strategic intentions and conversion targets of Axiata Sdn Bhd, diagnose the significant factors that influence desired modification, and provide recommendations on how to improve current conditions and achieve the desired results. This research provides an analysis of the many aspects that influence employee productivity through enhancing individual profiles, with the aim of facilitating organisational transformation. The aforementioned viewpoints are presented with four conceptual frameworks with vigorous research with the intention of addressing the research inquiry. In order to transform the organisation into a digital telecommunications company (TELCO), a comprehensive plan will be implemented. This method will cover several subjects like human resource interventions, operational efficiency, innovation, staff skill level, change implementation processes, innovation, and finally cultural aspects of organisational transformation
The need for a new entrepreneurship paradigm to address the issue of inequality
Get PDFIn their article on Sustainable Development and Entrepreneurship, Hall et al (2010, 446) make the point that “much of the work to date in the entrepreneurship field has an implicit assumption that entrepreneurship only leads to positive outcomes for society” and question the conditions under which entrepreneurship is welfare creating rather than welfare destroying. In our chapter in the ICSB’s 2024 Annual Global Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Report, Felicity and I address this with respect to the inequalities (SDG 10) that entrepreneurship has tended to create in “impoverished communities within developing and emerging economies” (op.cit). We provide examples of MSMEs that are addressing this issue and propose the need for a new Harmonious Entrepreneurship paradigm that does not see inequality as an inevitable consequence of entrepreneurship as Isenberg (2014) has contended
Calpurnius Siculus: Exploring pastoral en route to the city
Get PDFThis discussion explores Calpurnius Siculus’ contribution to and development of the pastoral genre. His incorporation of non-pastoral genres is discussed in relation to his concerns with pastoral succession, imperial recognition and personal remuneration. Calpurnius’ intertextual relationship with the Augustan love elegists and Ovid is explored as evidence of his innovative treatment of the genre. The trajectory from optimism with the pastoral genre in Eclogue 1 to disillusionment in Eclogue 7 is explored with particular focus on his ambiguous use of language and his representation of ‘unnatural’ nature. His imperial panegyric is considered alongside contemporary writers of the early Empire to counter criticism that Calpurnius was a self-serving career poet. The contradictions of the locus amoenus are an important theme of the collection and are discussed in the light of the difficulty surrounding interpretations of Calpurnius’ Eclogues
Conspirituality in the Age of TikTok: A Thematic Analysis of #AgeofAquarius
Get PDFThis study examines contemporary beliefs about the Age of Aquarius on the social media platform TikTok. The research aims to analyse user-generated content to identify the contemporary beliefs and perspectives surrounding the phenomenon, the historical and cultural contexts that inform these beliefs, and the extent to which the Age of Aquarius on TikTok is associated with conspirituality and far-right conspiracy theories. The methodology of the study was a deductive reflexive thematic analysis of user-generated content on the Age of Aquarius hashtag on TikTok, using the search engine function to collect data. The findings demonstrate a clear connection to the countercultural Age of Aquarius of the 1960s and 1970s, broader astrological debates as to when the Aquarian Age begins, and evident overlap with conspiritual narratives. The study contributes to existing literature beliefs and themes within New Religious Movements and alternative spiritualities on social media, the field of cyberethnography, and further illuminates the convergence between conspiracy theories and New Age beliefs

Get PDFGeoffrey of Monmouth has long been credited with inventing the bulk of British history, and more especially the Arthurian legend, through his composition of De Gestis Britonum, also known as Historia Regum Britonum. Because so little of the text can be corroborated by other sources, Geoffrey is, however affectionately, referred to as a fraud, and scholars of early Arthuriana tend to dismiss material that shares commonalities with his work as being unrepresentative
of the legend as it may have existed prior to Geoffrey’s influence. This dissertation examines the assumptions behind the charges of fraud and invention and how they have held back attempts to reconstruct the ‘pre-Galfridian’ Arthurian mythos. First, it examines the nature of history as a literary genre in Geoffrey’s era and lays rest to arguments that Geoffrey was deliberately attempting to pass off his work as a factual account of past events. Second, it looks at interactions between the Saxons and the Bretons—events corroborated by extant sources—to show how Geoffrey’s account manipulates but does not invent material ex-nihilo. It will also examine some assumptions surrounding details and events, such as Arthur’s invasion of Rome, that are not corroborated elsewhere, and how the political nature of these events shed light of the possible existence and provenance of a ‘very old book’ despite the long-held assumption that such a text was also the invention of Geoffrey’s imagination. Finally, it will examine one of the most iconic aspects of the Arthurian legend—Modred’s treason—and evidence that Geoffrey’s account is actually based on Welsh traditions despite the fact that no
corroborating sources survive. The overall conclusion is that Geoffrey did not invent as much as he’s credited with, and further critique of such assumptions will only add to our understanding of early Arthuriana
