    Get PDF
Achieving Sustainable Business Growth is the goal for all Malaysia’s Telecommunications companies because of the drastic business impact from Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) and the challenges in managing the changing dynamics of multigenerational workforce (Baby Boomer, Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z). Due to IR4.0, new rivalry (WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype, Signal, WeChat) emerged and competing with Telco services (SMS, MMS, Voice Call) causing declining of Telco financial performance. With IR4.0, it also forced Telco to speed up digital transformation journey to meet the expectation of customers/subscribers (Digital Apps, Excellence Network, Excellence Customer Service, Self-Serve Services). Adding to the complexity, minimum 4 different generations of employees that has diverse characteristic, way of collaboration and way of engagement exists within the same company. The main purpose of this research is to understand and identify the factors that influence the achievement of Sustainable Business Growth for Malaysia Telcos and propose an effective Integrated Sustainable Business Growth model through the effect of multigenerational workforce management and digital transformation. Sustainable Business Growth refers to the ability of the employees and leaders working together to overcome existing challenges and to achieve long-term growth of the company thru the measurements of financial performance, customer based, and employee’s satisfaction without incurring additional burden to the company such as debt, loan, or equity. This model will be part of the contribution to the industry, it allowed management of Telco to understand the needs of their own employees, how to motivate them into embracing and supporting the change from digital transformation which indirectly contributing to the financial and customer growth. This study aimed to identify an integrated fit model of Sustainable Business Growth thru independent variables such as Multigenerational Workforce Engagement, Multigenerational Workforce Collaboration, Multigenerational Workforce Characteristics, and mediating variables such as Managing Changing Dynamic of Workforce and Digital Transformation. Target population for this research includes working adults in Malaysia’s top 3 biggest consumer-based Telecommunications companies (Maxis, Celcom, or Digi). Inclusive of working adults born in year 1946 – 1964 (Baby Boomers), 1965 – 1980 (Gen X), 1981 – 1996 (Gen Y) and 1997 – 2012 (Gen Z). Both genders (Male or Female) and position in the company (Managerial or Non-managerial). According to recommendation of Krejcie and Morgan, researcher distributed 367 online surveys and collected 332 responses. Researcher used Mahalanobis distance to remove the outliers, leaving 283 valid responses for data analysis using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). In this thesis, four theories (Resource-Based Theory, Strauss-Howe Generational Theory, Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Dynamic Capabilities Theory) was used as the research anchor. According to Resource-Based Theory, company that focus on their employees will eventually develop sustainable competitive advantage that cannot be duplicate by competitors. Strauss-Howe Generational Theory explained the fourth turning of different generations that provide better understanding for the leaders on engagement, collaboration, and characteristic. Leader-Member Exchange Theory rationalized the important of leader to use different leadership styles in managing the changing dynamic of multigenerational workforce. Dynamic Capabilities Theory talked about the needs of leaders to manage the changing dynamics of the business to cater for rapid technological advancements and the capabilities for the employees to adapt and integrate with the change. Researcher used the 283 responses to validate the research framework using all the 9 Hypothesis to validate the achievement of Research Objectives. Based on the bootstrapping methods (Path/Beta Coefficients β-Value >0, Significant Test T-Value >1.96 and Probability P-Value <0.05), only 2 out of 9 hypothesis considered not significant, therefore two research objectives are not supported. Although some hypothesis is not significant but it corresponding to other thesis and journals, those variables are considered important. Thus, it was included into the design of Sustainable Business Growth Model. This research will provide Contribution to Body of Knowledge such as literature/theoretical gaps and Managerial Implications. The new proposed Bryan’s Sustainable Business Growth Model (BSBG) is the managerial implications that eased management to overcome business stagnating, drop of market share, down trend of revenue gain, low morale of the employees, dropping of customer based and digital transformation which part of the company goal to achieve long-term sustainable business growth

A community-based intervention to challenge attitudes towards intimate partner violence: results from a randomised community trial in rural South-West Nigeria

Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern worldwide, with significant repercussions for women’s health. In some parts of the world, IPV is considered an acceptable practice, especially in rural areas. Attitudes supportive of IPV have been reported as one of the foremost predictors of IPV, and a shift in the attitudes that permit, promote, and perpetuate IPV is required to substantially reduce its occurrence. Community-based interventions are a feasible strategy to engage community members in efforts to prevent IPV. This study tested a community mobilisation intervention to challenge attitudes towards IPV and prevent violence within intimate relationships. Methods: This randomised community trial was conducted in selected rural communities in Oyo State, Nigeria, between January 2019 and April 2021. The study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design and a three-stage sampling technique in selecting two local government areas, eight communities and the study participants. The 6-month community mobilisation intervention, focused on creating awareness and challenging attitudes supportive of IPV, was evaluated using two cross-sectional surveys (pre-and post-intervention), 12 in-depth interviews, and nine focus group discussions. The outcomes for this study, assessed using the WHO Women’s Health Questionnaire, included attitudes supportive of IPV, women’s experiences of IPV and men’s perpetration of IPV. Difference-in-differences (DID) regression models were estimated to compare changes in IPV levels in the intervention and control arms, while qualitative data were analysed using a thematic approach. Results: At baseline, 628 men and 667 women responded to the survey, and 640 men and 658 women responded to the survey at endline. The median age of the respondents was 35 years at baseline and 40 years at endline. In the intervention group, the proportion of women with attitudes supportive of IPV reduced between baseline and endline from 65.2% to 35.1% versus 45.2% to 32.7% in the control group (DID= –0.116, p=0.039). Women’s past year experience of IPV also reduced from 30.3% to 1.2% versus 48.4% to 33.2% in the control group (DID= –0.131, p=0.006). Changes in the proportion of men who had attitudes supportive of IPV or perpetrated IPV did not follow this trend. In the intervention group, the proportion of men with attitudes supportive of IPV increased between baseline and endline from 40.1% to 44.6%, as they did in the control group – from 43.7% to 45.8% (DID=0.015, p=0.805). Men’s past-year perpetration of IPV reduced from 29.9% to 19.9% versus 43.2% to 10.2% in the control group (DID= –0.050, p=0.155). Respondents to the qualitative interviews in both the intervention and control groups at baseline were aware of the various forms of IPV in their communities, and had attitudes supportive of physical violence; however, those in the intervention group alluded to a reduction in IPV at endline. Conclusion: This trial demonstrates the potential of community mobilisation as an intervention that can reduce the proportion of women who have attitudes supportive of IPV and had experienced IPV in the previous year

A Sartrean (or new intentionalist) analysis of the fallacy of the intentional fallacy: thought, consciousness and conflicts of interests

    Get PDF
Incorporating Sartre’s work on consciousness and adapting those dualistic elements of the literary argument over the ‘intentional fallacy’, this paper involves a critique of the new-materialist trend that typifes agency and intentionality in materialist terms. It will argue that attempts to dissolve all dualist distinctions (as, for example, posthumanists are inclined to do) are problematic when dealing with conficts of interests especially those of non-human animals. This critique applies particularly well to environmental ethics and animal ethics because ethicists and decision-makers need to be able to make moral judgments regarding cases in which the interests of creatures (conscious and nonconscious ones included) confict, and where many diferent interests need to be weighted

The Development of Landscape Painting Between the Late Gothic Period and the Early Renaissance

    Get PDF
This dissertation identifies several foundational advances that were instrumental in the emergence of early Renaissance landscape painting, a development that began to take shape between the late fourteenth through the fifteenth centuries. The purpose is to discover what the primary factors were that led to the inception of this new form of artistic expression. This objective is accomplished through an examination of the stylistic and formal changes, new advancements in materials and technical innovations, and various aspects of the cultural environment. The present study also seeks to understand how artistic exchange between Italian and Northern painters affected the development of painting landscapes. The research shows that the realistic rendering of natural objects and environments was the necessary initial phase of the development. The impulse to look to nature occurred first in Italy, and was based on the need for empirical illustrations for practical texts. In the North, East Anglian and French illuminations demonstrate that naturalistic art quickly became an important aspect of the Gothic aesthetic, and it was integrated into religious texts purely for artistic purposes. Northern manuscript painters were the first to develop a range of techniques for using light and colour to portray realistic natural environments, and Italian painters emulated these techniques to imbue their landscapes with a specific mood or emotion. For inspiration, artists in Italy and the North drew on both classical pastoral landscapes and the medieval concept of gardens of paradise. By tracing these developments, it becomes clear that the exchange of ideas and methods between Italian and Gothic painters, particularly among manuscript illuminators and miniaturists, was a crucial factor in the development of postclassical European landscape painting

    Multi-angle steering of a meander-line coil EMAT

EMATs are capable of both transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves within ferromagnetic and conductive materials. Meander-Line Coil (MLC) EMATs can transmit not only Rayleigh waves across the material's surface but also compression and shear waves at an angle into the material. The frequency of the transmission signal controls the propagation angle of the shear waves, and this paper establishes the simulated and experimental results for an MLC EMAT's beam directivity across desired steering angles of 15-90°. These results show that: a maximum magnitude occurred at the 31° steering angle; a steering limit at the 48° steering angle; and the maximum reception angle attained was at 61.1°. The sum of two steering angles' transmission signals showed the EMAT capable of generating two distinct shear wave beams at different propagation angles simultaneously. Further simulated modelling of the EMAT in a Pulse-Echo (PE) setup confirmed not only that the two beams could detect defects present in the material, but that the detecting beam could be identified by filtering of the returning waves

This chapter explores the role of the environment in children’s experience of the reception class. The photographs, drawings, observations and discussion shared by the children co-researchers are used to reflect and evaluate how the environment may impact on the child’s experiences. The chapter focuses on the indoor and outdoor environment, as well as specific aspects of these spaces, including choice of play experiences, the more-than-human world, movement and conversation. Photographs and drawings suggest that children identify both indoor and outdoor environments as significant to their reception class experiences. There is also a focus on play and child-led environments as opposed to more adult-led experiences. Choice, affordance, physical development, and oracy are discussed in line with the characteristics of the reception class environment. The implications of listening to the “voice of the child” and using a diversity of methods to understand children’s views on their environments is explored

Speech and the Cosmos: A Study of Speech as a Means of Relating with the Cosmos

    Get PDF
This study explores how creative cosmic forces find expression within the human being and, in particular, how this manifests in speech. It further explores whether humans are able to relate to the cosmos following this principle. The research uses a mixed method approach by combining a literature analysis with a qualitative investigation. Both investigate the nature of the organising principle behind the cosmos and consider whether this principle is intrinsically part of the human capacity for speech, thus embedding them within cosmic laws. The literary analysis explores the cultural settings of ritual speech during the Classical Greek and mediaeval periods. It follows up with an exploration of Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy as it relates to speech in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The second investigation consists of a research survey questionnaire submitted to a group of anthroposophical speech practitioners, enquiring whether and how they relate to the cosmos through speech. It qualitatively explores the experiences of the speech practitioners and how they engage with the cosmos by means of speech. The questionnaire introduced the topic of the cosmos as a principle underlying the manifestations of human speech

The novel Proof of Efficiency (PoEf) Consensus Mechanism: improved efficiency and cybersecurity for Blockchain-based Supply Chain Management Systems.

    Get PDF
The rapid growth of blockchain technology in Supply Chain Management (SCM) since 2016 has highlighted the need for faster, more reliable, and transparent data exchanges. However, current blockchain consensus mechanisms struggle to meet the efficiency and scalability requirements of modern SCM systems while remaining vulnerable to attacks. This thesis explores the optimisation of consensus mechanisms, particularly focusing on improving scalability, security, and performance. The research makes three key contributions. First, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 108 peer-reviewed articles was conducted, identifying major blockchain vulnerabilities in consensus mechanisms, smart contracts, network-level attacks, and cryptographic challenges. Second, the thesis introduces the novel Proof of Efficiency (PoEf) consensus mechanism, an improvement over the traditional Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) system. PoEf integrates sharding and a reputation-level score to enhance scalability and security. This mechanism dynamically adjusts the reputation of nodes based on their performance, ensuring high throughput, low latency, and scalability. Simulation results using BlockSim confirm that PoEf delivers higher throughput, lower latency, and greater scalability, making it more suitable for supply chain operations. Third, a Decision Matrix compares the performance and security of various consensus mechanisms, offering guidance for selecting the best fit for specific SCM requirements. Overall, PoEf represents a significant advancement in blockchain consensus mechanisms, demonstrating its potential to improve performance and handle large-scale SCM operations efficiently

Optimizing Routing Strategy in Software Defined Networking

    Get PDF
Traditional Network Architecture (TNA) is becoming inadequate due to its rigid, hardware-centric configurations, especially in environments where network conditions are highly variable. This has led to increased latency, congestion, and packet loss rates. This project aims to develop an optimized routing strategy for Software Defined Networking (SDN) that leverages machine learning techniques to enhance network traffic management's adaptability and efficiency. The project employs a combination of Dueling Deep Q-Networks (Dueling DQN) and real-time traffic state predictions to create a dynamic routing strategy. The methodology includes extensive simulation using SDN environments to evaluate the performance improvements over traditional routing methods. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed SDN-based routing strategy not only responds more efficiently to dynamic network conditions but also significantly optimizes performance metrics such as bandwidth utilization, latency reduction, and packet loss. The integration of Dueling DQN and real-time traffic predictions within SDN frameworks could potentially redefine network performance standards, offering a more adaptive, efficient, and robust network management system. This study contributes to the field by providing a scalable solution to the complexities of modern network environments, supporting the ongoing evolution of network infrastructure management
