Balancing Growth, Equity and Environment: A Temporal Evaluation of Sustainability in BRICS Economies

    No full text
This research investigates the sustainable development trajectories of the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – and the group’s recent members, namely Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia. The analysis focuses on the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: the social, economic, and environmental dimensions, over the period 2000–2022. The construction of an interdisciplinary framework, based on a few indicators such as poverty rates and education levels in the field, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and unemployment rates in the economic sphere, and CO2 emissions and natural resource use in the environmental sector, enables the research to make a comparative and temporal analysis of the sustainability performance of these emerging economies. Results document diversified patterns of development, with impressive economic progress, pervasive social inequalities, and increasing environmental pressures. Research further points to structural divergence among the initial BRICS members and new entrants to highlight the limits of such economies in combining social inclusion, protection of the environment, and economic growth. These results form part of the broader literature on sustainable development among the emerging economies and raise critical questions regarding the long-term sustainability of the BRICS model of advancing global sustainability objectives

The Application of the Lex Iulia de collegiis in the Early Imperial Context: Remarks for New Testament Exegesis

    No full text
This article offers a critical reassessment of the prevailing scholarly view regarding the content of the lex Iulia de collegiis and its application in the early Roman Empire. Most scholars argue that this law established a general authorization system for the formation of associations and mandated the dissolution of those that failed to comply. This interpretation has been widely accepted, influencing the exegesis of certain New Testament texts and the reconstruction of the legal status of early Christian communities. This study examines the sources most frequently cited in support of this hypothesis, highlighting their inadequacy in substantiating this scholarly paradigm. It demonstrates that the repressive measures attested in these sources, do not reflect the enforcement of the supposed lex Iulia de collegiis, but rather the application of criminal law provisions, particularly the leges de vi

Fra terra e mare: l’economia portofinese in età moderna

    No full text
This essay investigates the economic structure of Portofino in the early modern period, focusing on the interaction between land-based and maritime activities within the framework of Mediterranean coastal “multi-activity.” Drawing on unpublished archival sources—including parish registers, fiscal records, maritime censuses, and administrative correspondence—it reconstructs demographic trends, migration patterns, marriage networks, and occupational structures. The study examines the strategic and economic functions of the port as a refuge, transshipment point, and authorised site for ship maintenance within the Republic of Genoa’s maritime system. Quantitative and qualitative evidence is integrated to connect local dynamics to broader Mediterranean patterns of port hierarchy, seafaring labour mobility, and coastal economic resilience. By situating Portofino within multi-scalar maritime networks, the research contributes to debates on the role of minor harbours as active agents in early modern economic and maritime history

Targeting inflammation in endometriosis: emerging therapeutic options

    No full text
Introduction: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease affecting up to 10% of reproductive-aged women. Current therapies are predominantly hormone-based and offer symptomatic relief without correcting the immune dysregulation and inflammation that drive lesion persistence, pain, and infertility. Areas covered: This review summarizes emerging strategies that directly target inflammatory pathways in endometriosis. Key mechanisms involved in lesion survival and symptom generation include cytokine signaling (TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6), oxidative stress, immune-checkpoint dysregulation, and activation of the JAK/STAT pathway. Therapeutic approaches discussed comprise biologic agents (infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab, anakinra, tocilizumab), small-molecule JAK inhibitors (tofacitinib), and antioxidant compounds such as N-acetylcysteine, resveratrol, and vitamins C and E. Expert opinion: Targeting inflammation represents a promising shift in endometriosis management, particularly for women who do not respond to hormonal therapies or aim to conceive. Preclinical studies consistently demonstrate reductions in lesion size, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and neuroangiogenic signaling. Early clinical evidence - especially for TNF-α and IL-1 blockade and for N-acetylcysteine - suggests improvements in pain and, in selected cases, reproductive outcomes. Although preliminary, these findings support the rationale for inflammation-directed therapies. Future research should prioritize randomized trials, long-term safety and fertility assessment, and biomarker-guided patient stratification to identify responders and optimize precision use of these agents

“Prohibition” Italian style: some notes on medical and legal culture in the struggle against alcohol between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

    No full text
The essay analyzes the role of legal and medico-social culture in defining alcoholism as both a pathology and a social problem, focusing on the difficulties involved in translating these conceptual advances into effective legislation. Particular attention is devoted to the Italian reception of U.S. prohibitionism within the scientific and political debate of the immediate postwar period
