Drug enteric metabolism in gut microbiota-brain crosstalk
: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), such as Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) represent the leading cause of illness and disability worldwide. In the effort to unveiling the etiopathogenesis of these neurological diseases, increasing attention has recently been paid to the emerging role of the gut microbiota (GMB) in the so-called gut-brain axis, and to the correlation of neurodegenerative processes with intestinal dysbiosis, either of genetic bases or induced by drugs and their metabolites. Over time, there has been a notable surge in the quantity of scientific publications pertaining to the gut-brain axis and GMB metabolism, reaching top levels in 2023-2024. As a result, the body of research on the effects of the gut-brain axis on AD and PD has begun to increase. Nonetheless, the identification of gut-derived metabolites and their effects on the central nervous system (CNS) is frequently missing or only partially reported. It is therefore necessary to raise awareness on the importance of enteric metabolism and its assessment while designing new drugs and investigating their pharmacokinetic properties, since both healthy and dysbiotic gut can hamper or modify drugs activity and efficacy. This review aims at providing a critical overview of gut-derived metabolism of different drugs, focusing on their effects on the GMB and gut-brain axis. The discussion focused on common therapeutic agents against AD and PD, as well as non-prescription drugs and food supplements with known beneficial effects on the CNS, reviewing relevant literature of the last decade

Efficiency Performance of 7-Level Multiplexed and 3-Level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Converters
In medium-voltage AC applications, multilevel converters are essential due to their ability to achieve high efficiency and significantly reduce total harmonic distortion (THD), ensuring improved performance and power quality. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the efficiency, power loss, and THD characteristics of multiplexed multilevel converters and neutral point clamped converters. Using MATLAB®Simulink 2024b, the switching and conduction losses of both multiplexed multilevel converters and NPC converters are calculated. The three-level NPC converter offers advantages of a simpler design, reduced component count, and cost effectiveness with the drawback of low voltage quality. Simulation results validate the THD, power losses, and efficiency for the conventional three-phase three-level NPC converter and the three-phase multiplexed multilevel converter, and a detailed comparison is performed
“Forever fertile”: ovarian tissue cryopreservation for an extended reproductive lifespan
The global decline in birth rates highlights the need for effective fertility preservation strategies. Even though oocyte cryopreservation is a well-established technique in cancer patients and is increasingly requested for elective fertility preservation, its success is limited by age at freezing and restoration of ovarian activity is not provided. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is emerging as a promising alternative for both fertility preservation and reproductive lifespan extension. Unlike oocyte cryopreservation, ovarian tissue cryopreservation restores endocrine function, potentially delaying menopause and reducing associated health risks. Although concerns exist regarding graft longevity and surgical invasiveness, recent advancements—such as improved cryopreservation techniques, neovascularization strategies, and minimally invasive approaches—enhance its feasibility. Additionally, ovarian tissue cryopreservation allows for spontaneous conception, reducing the need for assisted reproductive technologies. As demand for reproductive longevity increases, the medical community must address ethical and regulatory implications while refining clinical applications. Integrating ovarian tissue cryopreservation into elective fertility preservation can provide women with more reproductive choices, aligning with advances in longevity medicine. Future research should focus on optimizing graft survival and assessing long-term health outcomes of delayed menopause to fully unlock the potential of ovarian tissue cryopreservation
A new gaze on the Mediterranean crossroads: mobilities, frictions and encounters
This text examines the Mediterranean as a contested space constituted through multiple lines of tension, rather than as a unified entity. Drawing on diverse disciplinary traditions – from Braudel's historical-cultural analysis to the Black Mediterranean intersectional approach – the issue conceives the Mediterranean as a "boundary object": sufficiently stable to maintain identity, yet malleable enough to assume new meanings across different social worlds. While acknowledging how EU border policies – memoranda with Libya and Tunisia, SAR zones redefinitions, hotspots – materially reinforce barriers through the racialisation of maritime space, the special issue also highlights how the same context generates encounters and solidarity practices. The articles collected analyse three interconnected dimensions: the material aspects of border assemblages and their role in producing the migrant as "alien" subject; the complex interplay between necropolitical measures and practices of solidarity; and methodological innovations developed through "seawork" – an ethnographic practice engaging with the sea, favouring collective writing and circular analysis, thus unsettling epistemologies inherited from land-based research
