    The paper aims to examine the revival of the utterance traditionally attributed to Thales: "everything is full of gods." It explores the perspectives of authors from the late Neoplatonic tradition, beginning with Proclus, who use this phrase to illustrate the divine nature of the whole and how the divine permeates every level of existence. The paper highlights how the concept of cosmic sympatheia (a kind of universal and mutual entanglement between all levels of reality) can be traced back to this perspective in pagan Neoplatonism. Additionally, it shows that the idea of the immanent presence of the divine in the cosmos is also present, albeit from a radically different perspective, in the works of some Christian Neoplatonists, such as Johannes Philoponus

    Educational Metaverse: teaching within immersive environments

    The term “Metaverse”, coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science-fiction novel “Snow Crash” (Stephenson, 1992), has become increasingly popular in recent years not only in the technological environment, but also in the public debate. The novel depicted an environment that presented a virtual world accessible through specialized glasses and headphones. The protagonist embraced this immersive experience to detach from the difficulties of his actual life, assuming an alternate existence by embodying an avatar. The core elements of the experience portrayed in the novel align closely with those prevalent in contemporary Virtual Reality (VR) encounters. These experiences plunge us into diverse Metaverses where we now often find ourselves working or engaging with others. The ongoing technological advancements in VR, coupled with the global surge in sales of Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) over the past decades (ReportLinker, 2023), have significantly increased the accessibility of immersive worlds crafted for the Metaverse, making them available to a wider audience. Multinationals such as Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta have chosen to invest huge amounts of capital in the development of virtual environments that are able to reproduce not only the appearance of the real world, but also the sociality between the people who populate it (Quast, 2023). The possibility of coexisting with others in a virtual place easily accessible through HMDs has led to numerous ethical discussions regarding such platforms seen as unregulated and potentially dangerous places for the individual (Kaur, n.d.). However, the Metaverse can be a huge opportunity to restructure the way knowledge is delivered at school and university level by bringing students to share lessons specifically designed to be experienced in immersive environments

    Improving Emerging Contaminant detection using a Biodegradable Film: Bridging Sustainability and Analytical Performances

    The increasing awareness of the environmental impact of analytical procedures has heightened the demand for sustainable methodologies. In response, the concept of White Analytical Chemistry (WAC) has been introduced to balance analytical performances, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency [1]. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are substances not yet regulated but currently under study due to potential environmental and health risks [2]. This work focuses on exploring WAC approaches to meet the challenge of determining ECs in complex matrices at ultra-trace levels. To this end, the use of a biodegradable polymeric film (Mater-Bi) was investigated for the extraction of ECs from wastewater samples [3]. A first method has been previously optimized through a design of experiments (DoE) approach, enabling the quantification of sixteen target analytes belonging to various classes—including UV filters, pharmaceuticals and additives—with satisfactory recoveries (R%), precision, and minimal ion suppression. Preliminary results also indicated the film's potential for extracting perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), although different extraction conditions were required, requiring further optimization. Therefore, a more extensive study was conducted, targeting over 60 ECs in water samples. Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis revealed a porous structure of the film section, prompting further investigation into alternative configurations to enhance interactions with the ECs. While three setups were explored to enhance cross-sectional area, R% showed no substantial differences. Thus, a mass balance study helped identifying the steps in which the loss occurred. Notably, polar compounds showed weak interaction with the film, while PFAS were not fully desorbed during the back-extraction step. To address these challenges, two DoEs will be conducted: a Mixture Process Design to modify the material optimizing the conditioning and a quadratic model to improve back-extraction. These efforts aim to enhance R% and broaden the film’s applicability to a wider range of ECs, with a potential focus on PFAS. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the potential of Mater-Bi as a green material for ECs extraction, with further optimization improving its role in sustainable environmental monitoring

    The ABA/LANCL1-2 hormone/receptors system controls cardiomyocyte mitochondrial function and ROS metabolism in cardiomyocytes through ERRα

    Introduction: Abscisic acid (ABA) is a hormone conserved across kingdoms, including both modern plants and animals. In mammals, ABA interacts with two receptors, LANCL1 and LANCL2, and is involved in various tissue-specific physiological functions, such as regulating blood glucose levels, inflammation, cardiomyocyte energy metabolism, neuroprotection, controlling adipocyte browning and energy expenditure, and promoting hemopoietic stem cell regeneration [1-2]. Recently, we showed that rat H9c2 cardiomyocytes overexpressing ABA receptors exhibit an increased mitochondrial proton gradient, enhanced respiration, and improved vitality following hypoxia/reoxygenation [3]. Aims: The aims of this study were: (i) to investigate the role of the ABA/LANCL1-2 system in ROS content and metabolism in LANCL1/2-overexpressing versus LANCL1/2-silenced rat H9c2 cardiomyocytes; (ii) to explore a potential role of ERRα in the ABA/LANCL1-2 signaling pathway; and (iii) to identify new LANCL agonists. Methods: In LANCL1/2-overexpressing and -silenced H9c2 cells we assessed cell viability using the resazurin assay. measured lipid peroxidation and ROS content with specific fluorescence probes and evaluated the expression of radicals-generating and scavenging enzymes through qPCR and Western Blot analysis. Using Surface Plasmon Resonance analysis, we investigated the binding capacity and affinity between LANCL2 and AR42, a newly identified putative LANCL2 agonist as determined by molecular docking modeling. Results: LANCL1/2-overexpressing H9c2 cells have a significantly higher survival rate under a condition of oxidative stress with a higher expression of ROS-scavenging enzymes and show a reduced lipid hydroperoxides, mitochondrial ROS content and expression of ROS-generating enzymes compared with double-silenced cells, while maintaining a significantly steeper mitochondrial proton gradient [4]. The transcription factor ERRα. is involved in this effects. Preliminary results suggest that AR42 enhances the mitochondrial proton gradient in rat H9c2 cardiomyocytes and is a new LANCL2 agonist. Conclusion: The ABA/LANCL1-2 system regulates ROS turnover and emerges as a promising target for enhancing cardiomyocyte mitochondrial function and resilience to oxidative stress
