Racism and Antisemitism in Fascist Italy. The Politics, Ideology, and Imagery of "La Difesa della razza"
The racism and antisemitism of Fascist Italy have often been described as ‘mild’, ‘cultural’, ‘spiritual’, and essentially non-violent, especially in comparison with the racial ideology of Nazi Germany. This book challenges this simplistic interpretation with a thorough analysis of the texts and images of the magazine "La Difesa della razza" (Defence of the race), the principal public voice of Fascist biological racism, which appeared fortnightly between 1938 and 1943 under the editorship of Telesio Interlandi, Mussolini’s ‘unofficial mouthpiece’, with governmental financial support.
A negative icon of the propaganda of Fascist racism, "La Difesa della razza" first appeared in August 1938 shortly before the passing of Italy’s Racial Laws, but had a long gestation. It was the expression of a Fascist cultural milieu – journalists, writers, artists, and architects – headed by Interlandi, whose racism and antisemitism dated back to the end of the First World War.
By placing the magazine’s emergence in this longer timescale, and exploring the interrelationships of political action, ideological discourse, and imagery, this book also demonstrates how the project of ‘anthropological revolution’ – building the New Man – was a central element of Italian Fascism, from the very beginning to the deportation of Italian Jews.

The emerging of solidarity along unauthorized routes: postcards of migrant encounters
The aim of this article is to stress the possibility of a specific and innovative gaze on borders and borderlands: one that puts solidarity as an encounter and a fabric among people on the move enacting a relentless dynamism along unauthorized routes, constituting one of the key elements for understanding the journey as a social construction. The turn we propose aims to mark a clear and novel theoretical break by: (i) overcoming the opposition between state mobility governance and migrants’ agency; (ii) considering unauthorized movements as a variable social construction that can be originally explored from the perspective of solidarity networks. To deepen the theoretical implications of this hypothesis, we would like to start from our ethnographic notes in different borderlands, along the internal and external European frontiers, where we have been doing fieldwork since 2016, about the everyday deployment of grass-root solidarity

Learning and Online Replication of Grasp Forces from Electromyography Signals for Prosthetic Finger Control
Partial hand amputations significantly affect the physical and psychosocial well-being of individuals, yet intuitive control of externally powered prostheses remains an open challenge. To address this gap, we developed a force-controlled prosthetic finger activated by electromyography (EMG) signals. The prototype, constructed around a wrist brace, functions as a supernumerary finger placed near the index, allowing for early-stage evaluation on unimpaired subjects. A neural network-based model was then implemented to estimate fingertip forces from EMG inputs, allowing for online adjustment of the prosthetic finger grip strength. The force estimation model was validated through experiments with ten participants, demonstrating its effectiveness in predicting forces. Additionally, online trials with four users wearing the prosthesis exhibited precise control over the device. Our findings highlight the potential of using EMG-based force estimation to enhance the functionality of prosthetic fingers
Adaptive Multi-Stage Transfer Learning Approach for Electronic Component Detection in Waste Printed Circuit Boards
The fast growing trend of electronic waste (e-waste), especially from printed circuit boards (PCBs), has created significant challenges for the efficient recovering of critical raw materials (CRMs). The recovery of valuable materials from these components is crucial for sustaining a circular economy. This paper proposes a adaptive multi-stage transfer learning strategy to improve the automatic detection and localization of selective electronic components on WPCBs containing different distributions of CRMs. We propose an adaptive multi-stage transfer learning strategy using YOLOv11 model that not only improves the detection accuracy, but also addresses the challenges of class imbalance in the WPCBs dataset. The proposed approach improves the detection accuracy by focusing selective electronic components use for CRMs recovery in production processes. This automatic detection and localization system reduces the labor costs, minimizes waste, and supports the principles of sustainability and resource efficiency. Thus, this work presents an effective solution for automated e-waste recycling, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth
Saint-Simon per la nuova Europa? Le interpretazioni parallele di Carlo Curcio e Armando Saitta
This article analyses the reception of Saint-Simon’s De la réorganisation de la société européenne in Italy at the collapse of the fascist regime, when it was designated as an important source of inspiration by historians Carlo Curcio and Armando Saitta in the debate regarding the future of Europe.
This case study provides the comparative analysis on how this legacy was preserved by those historians who had very different backgrounds, a contrast which emerged in their pages where Saint-Simon’s project of a European union is described ranging between liberalism and socialism, politics and economy, democracy and the threat of technocracy
Envisioning Readers and Shaping Knowledge: Two Instances of Textual Intersections Between China and Italy in the Early Twentieth Century
Within the construction framework of China Knowledge, a crucial role has
been played by translations as creations of texts whose purposes clearly went beyond
the transfer of meanings among different languages and cultures, thus becoming agencies
in the shaping of a translingual space where Target Language and Source Language
constantly interact. The process of transmission and acquisition of literary texts will be
analysed here from two different kinds of approach and perspectives, represented by
Mario Novaro (1868‐1944), a non-sinologist who carved out the earliest Italian translation
of the Zhuangzi (1922), and Agostino Biagi (1882‐1957), a former Franciscan missionary
in China whose legacy of manuscripts has recently been discovered and acclaimed,
especially for his outstanding Chinese translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia
