Autoproduzione, riuso, sfide globali, nuove tecnologie digitali sono i temi che trasversalmente hanno attraversato l'opera di molti giovani designer italiani che hanno partecipato alle esperienze collettive di Opos e Subalterno 1. Tematiche importanti anticipate e ancora attualissime e su cui c'è stata un'ampia riflessione progettuale all'interno di questi "movimenti". Un excursus storico che fa riflettere su nuovi sviluppi e strade percorribili per il design italiano contemporaneo
A new approach to evaluate veterinary histopathological tissue sample with image and ultrasound data
In many proliferative lesions, arising from superficial and deep tissues, macroscopic and micro-scopic evaluations are essential in the diagnosis (e.g. hypertrophy, hyperplasia, dysplasia or neo-plasia). The term virtual biopsy is gaining ground. This would transform the biopsy from a physi-cal and invasive act to a virtual act, while still providing very precise diagnostic and prognostic in-formation, always considering the traditional physical biopsy as the gold standard. A innovative rotary stage-based scanning system and a manual ultrasound platform were used to obtain, respec-tively, image and ultrasound data of tissue lesions, fixed in buffered formalin and used for classical histopathological examination. Fifty-nine samples (49 dogs, 9 cats, 1 rodent) of various fixed pathological tissues were analyzed as follows: 33 skin, 9 subcutaneous, 9 mammary, 3 oral muco-sal, 2 intestinal, 1 renal, 1 bladder, and 1 splenic lesions. Image data were collected with the cus-tomized semi-automatic scanning platform, and ultrasound data from the same neoformations were collected using the custom-assembled ultrasound platform. The morphometric findings acquired by the device were then compared with manual measurements of the same masses, using a caliper. Finally, the histological section of the proliferate tissue, mirroring the one scanned by the device, was microscopically evaluated by expert pathologists, and a correct diagnosis was issued. The set of numerical data collected by the device was then compared with the morphometric data collect-ed by the pathologist, to interpret the examined mass in terms of cellular damage and proliferative pattern. A 16 MHz high-frequency ultrasound probe was used to collect data, which allowed for greater resolution and more precise measurement of the target tissues. The quality of the collected data was assessed based on the clear discernibility of a reflection peak in the received ultrasound signal. A link between ultrasound and image data obtained from the camera can be established by identifying the scanner image whose position is closest to the ultrasound image. Finally, a data ar-chive was created to process and visualize the obtained data set. Results show interesting indica-tions that can be extrapolated from the data set, allowing to identify, based on the specific acoustic properties of the examined tissue or on the depth of the evaluated area, high quality signals that in the case of neoplasms allowed to distinguish the pathological areas from the healthy ones. Alt-hough preliminary, these data demonstrate that potential surrogates of macro-and microscopic as-sessments of tissue proliferations can be pursued through the new imaging metrics.

Blue elixir of youth and wellness: The multicomponent-multitarget paradigm of Curcuma caesia Roxb
Aging is a complex biological process influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise. This process not only leads to visible signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles and elasticity loss, but also predisposes individuals to a spectrum of age-related diseases. Oxidative stress and inflammation are key events driving this phenomenon. This study aims to delve into the antioxidative and protective potential of a rhizome extract from Curcuma caesia Roxb., a less explored species within the turmeric family, focusing on its effects on HaCaT cells subjected to UV radiation. Curcuma caesia Roxb. rhizome was extracted for a phytocomplex (CCRE). Through HPLC-ESI-MS/MS, the chemical analysis identified key phenolic compounds, including (-)-epicatechin, procyanidin B2, and p-coumaric acid. Human immortalized keratinocyte cell lines (HaCaT) were treated with CCRE in healthy and UVB-induced conditions to assess their impact on oxidative stress and aging. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in mitochondrial superoxide anion levels without affecting mitochondrial membrane potential, indicating enhanced cellular resilience to oxidative stress. Additionally, CCRE decreased UVB-induced IL-6 expression and IKK phosphorylation, which play a crucial role in inflammaging. Notably, CCRE treatment also improved cell viability upon UVB exposure and mitigated UVBinduced cell apoptosis, further underscoring its potential to preserve cellular integrity and function in relation to environmental stressors. CCRE chemical composition and biological effects position it as a potential ingredient for formulations and functional foods to combat the signs of skin aging and enhance overall skin health
Methods and Instruments | Scanning Electronic Microscopy
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) principles are introduced and some applications to the characterization of electrochemical power sources are presented. The general features of a SEM microscope are briefly described with particular attention to: (i) generation and focusing of the electron beam over the samples; (ii) interactions between electrons and atoms in the sample producing the analytical signals; (iii) detection and recording of secondary or backscattered electrons for image reconstruction; (iv) detector of X-rays and electron probe microanalysis. Some applications of the technique in the field of electrochemical storage devices are summarized, with the aim of shedding light onto the relationships between morphology/composition and electrochemical behavior of electrodes. Finally, an outlook on recent methodologies is given,
such as environmental SEM which, operating under moderate pressures, allows in situ monitoring of chemical and morphological transformations related to electrochemical power sources

Levels and oxidative toxicity of microplastics and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in different tissues of sea cucumber (Holothuria tubulosa)
Nowadays, marine pollution is a global problem which finds in microplastics (MPs) and emerging pollutants, such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), two of the main culprits. Sea cucumbers are a group of marine benthic invertebrates that show ecological, economic and social relevance. As deposit/suspension feeders, sea cucumbers show high susceptibility to bioaccumulate marine pollutants, including PFASs and MPs. In this study, we describe the presence and the effects of MP and PFAS accumulation on gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and coelomic fluid of sea cucumber (Holothuria tubulosa) specimens through the assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers. The MP abundance in the GIT ranged from 3 to 20 particles animal-1, while the extracted MPs from the coelomic fluid ranged from 0 to 7 particles animal-1, thus confirming a probable transfer through the respiratory tree. The MPs were identified by FT-IR and Raman analyses, and the polymer types were mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). The concentrations of nineteen perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) were measured in the body wall of sea cucumbers. We found up to seven out of the nineteen PFASs. The Σ19PFAS were in the range 0.083-0.620 μg kg-1 and the maximum concentrations of individual PFASs in all the samples varied from 0.010 (PFHxA, PFHpA) to 0.390 (PFBS). Pearson coefficients showed a positive correlation among MPs and most of the oxidative stress parameters (i.e. catalase, glutathione S transferase, malondialdehyde and DNA damage) suggesting, however, a potential tissue-related response. This study thus revealed that MPs, and partially PFASs, induce oxidative imbalance in H. tubulosa, and pointed up the importance of different tissues in mediating dose/time-related responses to oxidative stress.
