Exploring the Design of Portable Devices in Science Fiction Video Games
The design of handheld interactive devices in science fiction video games often prioritizes visual impact over usability, limiting their plausibility as future technology visions. To investigate the topic, we used physical prototyping and user evaluation to critically examine how such fictional devices might function if realized. We selected 20 devices from popular science fiction games and conducted a visual thematic analysis. Focus groups evaluated both device images and full-scale physical prototypes of one device and redesigned variants. The findings show that many in-game devices suffer from poor ergonomics and unclear interfaces, but small design adjustments, such as relocating buttons or reshaping grips, can improve perceived usability without breaking narrative immersion. This work introduces a user-centered approach to evaluating speculative virtual objects and offers Human Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers and game designers a method for grounding future technology visions in practical interaction concerns
Exhibition Design for a Tangible Archaeology Prototype:Excavating Local History
We present an interactive archaeology prototype with a tangible user interface and in-the-wild user study at a science museum where the piece was exhibited. We also present an analysis of which building blocks the interactive exhibition experience consisted of. The prototype was studied at the museum for two days by observing the visitors at it (n=61) and through a user study where different elements of the interactive exhibition were assessed (n=9). The exhibition is discussed through a framework of five design elements: story, information, technology, presentation, and ethics. Our salient findings highlight the importance of careful design in balancing authenticity and usability, the storytelling experience and the importance of designing a suitable pace for interacting with the exhibition. We also provide discussion points for gamification and integrating ethical viewpoints when designing interactive cultural heritage exhibitions. Our research contributes to museum exhibition design and engaging visitors through technological experiences
Investigating Tilt-Based Technique for Performing Wrist Movement Analysis in Virtual Reality
This paper explores a tilt-based technique for wrist movement analysis using 3D joint position data captured by a standard virtual reality (VR) controller device. This technique leverages natural tilt movements detected by VR controllers, offering a more streamlined and computationally efficient alternative to traditional methods that rely on complex sensor arrays or advanced machine learning models. We conducted a user experiment to evaluate the tilt-based technique in two key areas: movement recognition and kinematic metric measurement. First, we analyzed movement data to precisely recognize six distinct wrist movements, achieving a high F1 score of 93.8%. Next, we assessed the ability of the technique to measure kinematic metrics, specifically focusing on speed and smoothness. Our results showed that particular performance metrics aligned closely with the natural characteristics of the movements

Interspecies Emotional Labour:Unspoken Expectations of Professionalism in Guide Dog Work
This book explores the topic of interspecies emotional labour through the work of guide dogs and their instructors. The skill of managing emotions to present oneself with the professionalism required is referred to as emotional labour. Extending practitioner knowledge and emotional labour theory to Anthrozoology and Animal Organization Studies discourse, this multispecies ethnography draws on the author's work with guide dogs, and those of the professionals she interviewed, to introduce multiple case studies that explore the enmeshed dynamics and practices involved in emotional labour within multispecies workplaces. It presents new insights into why the emotional labour strategies a human or dog worker utilises are important, and how these can directly impact an individual’s working success and well-being. Despite the centrality of emotional labour performances in multispecies workplaces, it has fallen under the radar of academic and practitioner attention until recent years, making this an innovative, timely addition to existing discourse. This book will appeal to practitioners and academics interested in understanding and improving emotional labour education and practices to support more sustainable interspecies work
Kenen ääni kuuluu testamentissa
A will is a key instrument in estate planning. It is also one of the most significant and personal legal actions. As family relationships become more complex and wealth increases, the significance of the will is likely to continue to increase. One of the main reasons for making a will is to secure the well-being of the family and surviving spouse after the death of the testator. Despite the aim of facilitating matters related to inheritance, a will can still cause conflicts in family relationships and increase the number of disputes that go to court. There are several uncertainties associated with a will, some of which start already during the will-drafting phase. Will documents are often brief and drawn up in accordance with document templates and do not necessarily reflect the true intentions of the testator. They are short and simplified in wording and provide only little information which would reveal the reasons behind the preparation of the will or the objectives of the testamentary provisions. In this article, we examine the will as a tool for estate planning, as a personal narrative and as a language act. We consider whether the process of planning and preparing the will is driven by identifying the goals, purpose and will of the testator and by establishing a sufficient legal framework for their implementation. We will highlight how legal design offers perspectives and methods for moving from expert-orientation to user- and customer-orientation in the planning and preparation of a will, so that the will can truly reflect the voice and will of the testator. This requires paying attention to the will preparation process as well as to the content, linguistic clarity, comprehensibility and structural consistency of the will document. The aim is to create a will that is both legally valid and genuinely reflects the intent, will and values of the testator and ensures their realisation in practice
