No full textGifts from the Sentient Forest (GSF) on kansainvälinen, monitieteinen taidepohjainen tutkimushanke, joka syntyi Lapin yliopiston Arktisen keskuksen ja australialaisen Notre Damen yliopiston yhteistyönä Koneen Säätiön For the Woods -rahoitusohjelman (2024-26) tuella.Boreaalisten ekosysteemien heikentyminen Pohjois-Suomessa johtuu vanhojen puiden laajamittaisesta raivauksesta niin Lapissa kuin Oulun ja Rovaniemen kaupunkialueilla. Ilmastonmuutos häiritsee ihmisten ja puiden välisiä moninaisia suhteita ja tulee jatkossakin muuttamaan pohjoisia metsiä merkittävästi.Vastauksena näihin ekologisiin realiteetteihin hanke on kehittänyt uusia tapoja olla vuorovaikutuksessa Pohjois-Suomen metsien ja puiden kanssa, ja arvostaa niitä ympäröivää kulttuuriperintöä. Työmme perustuu metsän tuntoisuuden (sentience) käsitteeseen, joka tunnustaa puiden kyvyn aistia, kommunikoida, käyttäytyä, oppia ja muistaa. Metsän tuntoisuus luo projektille perustan, jonka pohjalta voimme syventää arvostustamme metsiä kohtaan taiteen, elokuvan, musiikin, runouden, proosan, performanssin ja muiden luovien lähestymistapojen avulla.Vuosina 2024 ja 2025 GSF järjesti erilaisia kaikille avoimia tapahtumia, jotka pyrkivät lisäämään kokemuksia ja ymmärrystä puiden tuntoisuudesta ja aistimuksellisuudesta. Osallistujia oli Rovaniemeltä, lähialueilta ja kansainvälisesti. Keskeisessä osassa olivat intensiiviset luovat retriitit, joihin osallistui viidentoista taiteilijan, kirjailijan, aktivistin, tutkijan ja ekologin kohortti, joka tutki metsän tuntoisuutta Pohjois-Suomessa luovin ja mielikuvitukseen tukevin keinoin. Vuonna 2024 retriitit järjestettiin Äkäslompolossa Stenan Majoilla lähellä Pallas-Yllästunturin kansallispuistoa.Osallistujat perehtyivät vuodenaikatietoisuuteen, pareidolian kuvioajatteluun, pyhien maisemien visualisointiin, puiden kanssa muistelemiseen ja enemmän-kuin-inhimillisten toimijoiden kohtaamiseen. Nämä tekniikat tarjosivat käytännön keinoja pohjoisen metsän tuntoisuuden kohtaamiseen ja kokemiseen.Ohjelman vetäjinä opimme, että metsän lahjat ilmenevät monin tavoin –koivun kuoressa nähdyistä tietäjän kasvoista henkilökohtaiseen muutokseen, joka syntyy metsään uppoutumisesta Pohjois-Suomen kahdeksan vuodenajan aikana. Metsän tuntoisuuden ja aistimuksellisuuden ymmärtäminen voi torjua tuhoisaa ympäristösuhdetta ja auttaa näkemään pohjoiset metsät sekä perintönä että kotipaikkana. Kun tunnistamme kasvien, puiden ja metsien arvon muutenkin kuin hyödykkeinä, alamme ymmärtämään niitä monimutkaisia tapoja, joilla kaikenlaiset kasvit uudistavat ihmisen ja luonnon suhteita ja ylläpitävät maapalloa.The Gifts from the Sentient Forest (GSF) exhibition is the outcome of an international, interdisciplinary arts-based research project between the University of Lapland’s Arctic Centre, Finland and University of Notre Dame, Australia with support from the Kone Foundation’s “For the Woods” funding programme (2024–26). In Northern Finland, including Finnish Lapland as well as the urban areas of Oulu and Rovaniemi, the widespread clearing of old trees has degraded boreal ecosystems. Disrupting the diverse relationships between people and trees, climate change will continue to alter the country’s northernmost forests.In response to these ecological realities, the project has developed new modes of interacting with Northern Finland’s trees and appreciating the cultural legacies surrounding them. At the centre of the work is forest sentience, a concept that highlights the abilities of trees to sense, communicate, behave, learn, and remember. Throughout the project, forest sentience provides a basis for deepening our appreciation of the arboreal world through art, film, music, poetry, prose, performance, and other creative responses. In 2024 and 2025, GSF offered a range of public programmes facilitating experiences and understandings of tree sentience for participants in Rovaniemi, surrounding areas, and internationally. Central to this work was a series of intensive in-person creative retreats with a cohort of fifteen artists, writers, activists, researchers, and ecologists exploring forest sentience in Northern Finland through imaginative means. In 2024, the retreats took place at beautiful Stenan Majat in Äkäslompolo, Lapland, near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Exercises in cultivating seasonal awareness, pattern-thinking through pareidolia, visualising sacred landscapes, remembering (with) trees, and interviewing more-than-human beings provided the cohort with practical techniques for encountering, experiencing, and engaging with the forest sentience of the North.As programme facilitators, we have learned that gifts come in a multitude of forms —from the face of a sage perceived suddenly in birch bark to the personal transformation resulting from immersion in forests over Northern Finland’s eight seasons. Understanding sentience can counter destructive attitudes towards the environment, reframing the North as both heritage and homeland. Recognising plants, trees, and forests in contexts other than exploitation sheds light on the complex ways in which plants of all kinds rejuvenate human-nature relationships and sustain the Earth

No full textTässä luvussa tavoitteemme on kartoittaa sosiaalialan ammattilaisten konkreettisia toimintamalleja ja -tapoja, joiden avulla he pyrkivät edistämään nuorten asiakkaiden osallisuutta. Tutkimuskysymyksemme on: millaisia nuorten aikuisten osallisuutta edistäviä työskentelytapoja ja toimintamalleja on tunnistettavissa sosiaalialan ammattilaisten haastattelupuheesta? Vastaamme tähän kysymykseen nuorten kanssa työskentelevien sosiaalialan ammattilaisten ryhmähaastatteluaineiston avulla. Aineiston analyysiin on sovellettu refleksiivistä temaattista analyysia (Braun & Clarke 2021; 2019; 2006) ja tutkimustulosten tulkinnan teoreettisena viitekehyksenä käytämme osallisuuden käsitettä (Isola, Kaartinen, Leemann, Lääperi, Schneider, Valtari & Keto-Tokio 2017; Leemann & Hämäläinen 2016; Salminen ym. 2021)
Conclusions:Towards more nuanced understandings of fathers’ care
No full textIn the last chapter of this book, the editors review the key themes of the book and the ways in which a more nuanced understanding of contemporary fatherhood and fathers’ care has been achieved. The editors highlight how chapters from various parts of the world, analysing data from differently positioned men, their co-carers and their children, reveal the diverse ways in which fathers may engage in care. They argue that a discourse of caring, intimate and emotionally engaged fatherhood has a global reach, extending beyond the normative, middle-class, white Anglo-European contexts in which such theories were first developed. The chapters also show the diverse ways in which such care may manifest itself for differently positioned fathers and families. However, several constraints, such as gender ideologies and father-exclusive policies, also exist in many country contexts that limit fathers’ further involvement in care, and some fathers reject a more ‘caring’ and intimate form of fathering. Finally, the chapter identifies key gaps in current sociological fatherhood research that should receive greater attention in future studies

Get PDFThis study explores a multi-phased bibliometric analysis (BA) approach as a methodological contribution to Arctic Social Science research. It proposes BA as a structured tool for conducting literature reviews in highly interdisciplinary fields, where boundaries between disciplines and knowledge domains are fluid. By applying this approach to Arctic research – an area marked by epistemic diversity and complex thematic intersections – the study demonstrates how BA can map conceptual trajectories, reveal emerging patterns, and support cumulative understanding. Rather than treating BA as a purely technical procedure, the article frames it as a reflexive practice embedded in relational processes of knowledge co-production. Grounded in a new materialist perspective, it emphasises the entanglement of human and technological agency in shaping research. The approach integrates principles such as cultural sensitivity and collaborative validation. Ultimately, this work positions Arctic research not as the object of analysis, but as a dynamic context to illustrate how BA can navigate interdisciplinary complexity in the social sciences
Exploring Perceptions of Robot Facial Expressions in Service Interactions
Get PDFThe problem of emotional alignment in human-robot interaction remains underexplored in real-time conversational contexts. Inthis paper, we investigate the role of facial expressions in voice-based interactions using the Ameca humanoid robot, comparingconditions where facial expressions are appropriate or inappropriate. In a user study (N = 28), participants interacted with the robotin a simulated ticket-purchasing scenario. Our findings reveal that appropriate facial expressions significantly enhanced pragmaticaspects of the interaction compared to inappropriate expressions, which, although sometimes confusing, could still provoke deeperengagement. Participants noted that the interaction flow felt unnatural as facial expressions could only be rendered after the lip-syncedspeech, rather than simultaneously. These results highlight the importance of emotional congruence in improving the naturalness ofhuman-robot interaction. Festivaalibarometri 2024 ja Venuebarometri 2024:Yleisön käsitykset festivaaleista ja konserttipaikoista sekä epäasiallisen kohtelun muodot elävän musiikin tapahtumissa
No full textTämä raportti sisältää tulokset kahdesta erillisestä yleisötutkimuksesta vuodelta 2024: festivaalikävijöiden mielipiteitä kyseltiin festivaalibarometrissa ja keikka- ja konserttikävijöiden venuebarometrissa. Molemmissa kyselyissä oli mukana osio, jossa kysyttiin epäasiallisen kohtelun kokemuksista. Tutkimusraportti koostuu kolmesta osasta. Ensimmäisessä osassa esitellään festivaalibarometrin viimeisimmät tulokset. Julkaisun toinen osa sisältää venuebarometrin tulokset. Lopuksi käydään läpi epäasiallisen kohtelun kokemuksia niin festivaaleilla kuin keikoilla ja konserteissakin. Tämä osio on nyt mukana toista kertaa.Suomalaisten rytmimusiikkifestivaalien yleisöille suunnattu festivaalibarometri toteutettiin ensimmäisen kerran syksyllä 2014 eri yliopistojen ja festivaalikentän toimijoiden välisenä yhteistyönä. Joka toinen vuosi järjestettävän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on koota tietoa suomalaisista rytmimusiikkifestivaalien kävijöistä ja seurata heidän mielipiteidensä kehittymistä vuosien kuluessa. Tavoitteena on siis muodostaa kyselyaineistojen pohjalta käsitys festivaalien asiakaskunnasta. Vuoden 2024 tutkimusraportti kokoaa viimeisimmät tulokset.Keikka- ja konserttikävijöihin keskittyvä yleisötutkimus, venuebarometri, toteutettiin puolestaan ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 2020. Vuoden 2024 raportissa esitellään nyt kolmannen venuebarometrin tuloksia.Kyselyjen rakentamisesta ja levittämisestä vastasi LiveFIN ry, joka on valtakunnallinen musiikkitapahtumien ja niiden järjestäjien yhteenliittymä ja etujärjestö. Tämän tutkimusraportin vastaavina tahoina ovat toimineet Lapin yliopiston Matkailualan tutkimus- ja koulutusinstituutti sekä Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian Taidejohtamisen aine. Muita yhteistyökumppaneita aiemmissa tutkimuksissa ovat olleet festivaalien edunvalvontajärjestö Finland Festivals, Seinäjoen ammattikorkeakoulu, Turun yliopiston kauppakorkeakoulun Porin yksikkö, Seinäjoen yliopistokeskus sekä tutkimukseen osallistuneet festivaalit ja keikka- ja konserttipaikat
