Understanding Canonization Linkage to Community Betrayal:Deconstructing the Sainthood of Charles Lwanga and Companion Martyrs of Uganda

    No full text
It is the dream of every intentional and dedicated Catholic faithful to become a saint. Ugandan saint Charles Lwanga and his companions were canonized by Pope Paul VI. This article uses deconstruction method of secondary data and the concept of institutional betrayal to analyse narratives available in the archives of church history. The deconstruction, as proposed by Jacques Derrida, is used as a critical theory and philosophical approach to empirically establish whether Charles Lwanga and companions are traitors or saints according to the Baganda tribe. The article argues that missionaries used a reward tactic to facilitate a betrayal that is in favour of Christianity to be perceived as a good deed worthy of an immortal reward, by canonizing traitors of Baganda for dying for the Christian faith, which was a foreign culture to the Baganda tribal culture at the time of Charles Lwanga and his companions’ death. This article finds that canonization is a complementary strategy of colonization

Minimal AMOC impact in Alaska during the Younger Dryas

    No full text
The Younger Dryas chronozone (YD), between ∼12,900 and 11,600 years ago, represents a climatically dynamic period in Earth's history that was defined by rapid millennial-scale climate changes. The cause of the climate change during the YD is typically attributed to substantial meltwater flux into the North Atlantic, which weakened the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). However, it is unclear if the climate signal from periods of AMOC shutdown were truly global in nature. Here, by utilizing the transient iTraCE simulation, a coupled climate model simulation of the last deglaciation, we test if the climate in Alaska was strongly influenced by an AMOC forcing. We find no significant impact of a North Atlantic meltwater forcing on Alaska climate during the YD. However, we do find millennial-scale climate changes concurrent with the YD. We argue that the millennial-scale climate change in Alaska during the YD was driven by changes in the tropical Pacific mean state, which could have been mistaken for an AMOC forcing.</p

Lifelines and Gateways:The Relational Affordances of Arctic Airports

    No full text
Airports are indispensable to life in the Arctic. Often shaped by geopolitical agendas and external economic interests, they provide vital links for local communities across remote landscapes. However, their societal roles have received limited scholarly attention. By conducting an ethnographic comparison of three cases, this study examines the relational affordances of Arctic airports. Our case studies include Longyearbyen, which is extremely remote but well connected through its airport; Rovaniemi, a central Arctic hub with an international airport and a range of other transport infrastructure; and Tasiilaq, a region that currently does not (yet) have a well-working air connection. While the first towns are established Arctic tourism destinations, the last aspires to increase accessibility and thus tourist visits by establishing a more central airport. The study applies a relational framework that foregrounds the complex socio-material interactions through which infrastructures acquire meaning and function. Our study reveals how Arctic airports simultaneously afford mobility and essential services for residents, enable economic activities such as tourism, and serve broader state and strategic interests. The comparison enables us to capture not only the salient similarities but also the striking differences between Arctic airports according to their local socio-material and environmental contexts, the availability of alternative transport infrastructure, and broader political processes. By centering airports’ relational affordances, this article advances anthropological understandings of Arctic infrastructures and calls for greater local participation in shaping future infrastructural development

Päämiehen asemasta ja oikeuksista holhoustoimen muuttuvassa järjestelmässä

    No full text
Tutkimuksen tuloksena on piilokontrollin käsite.

Harnessing emotion:the haptic and acoustic professionalism of guide dogs

    No full text
Guide dogs are expected to guide vision impaired humans in a professional manner, whereby their emotion displays are calm and confident. To do so successfully, they perform emotional labour by continuously managing their emotion displays. Emotional labour efforts that construct a professional demeanour can be visually appreciated in multispecies workplaces. However, emotional labour outcomes of guide dogs can be received haptically and acoustically - of particular importance for the vision impaired humans they live and work with. This paper's outcomes are based on data collected through a patchwork ethnography spanning nine years. It presents the role that physical touch, equipment, and sound can play as emotional labour outcomes performed by guide dogs. In doing so, it deepens existing interspecies emotional labour discourse by introducing a more nuanced understanding of emotional labour performed by individuals of other species, as well as how this can be received by vision impaired humans
