Artikkeli tutkii tätä kahdella tasolla: poliittisessa keskustelussa ja kansalaisten poliitikoille lähettämissä kirjeissä. Poliittinen keskustelu kehysti laman kansallisena ja henkisenä kriisinä, vedoten talvisodan henkeen. Kirjeet paljastivat, että kansalaiset käyttivät historiaa monin eri tavoin tulkitakseen tapahtumia. Tutkimus korostaa taloudellisten olosuhteiden, poliittisen keskustelun ja kulttuuristen narratiivien vuorovaikutusta kriisiin reagoimisessa.This article explores the 1990s economic crisis in Finland as a national experience, emphasizing the influence of historical context and future expectations on political and public narratives. The article examines this on two levels: in political discourse and in letters sent to politicians. Political debates framed the recession as a national and spiritual crisis, invoking the spirit of the Winter War. Letters revealed that citizens used history in diverse ways to interpret the events. The study highlights the interplay between economic conditions, political discourse, and cultural narratives in shaping responses to the crisis
Experiencing untouched nature in the great indoors:On the production of wilderness in Arctic tourist enclaves
No full textThis chapter unravels the nature–society dichotomy in the context of nature-based tourism. Drawing upon Neil Smith's production of nature thesis, the chapter examines how Arctic-themed resort enclaves in northernmost Sweden, Finland and Norway, as well as Iceland, produce wilderness for international markets. Even though the studied venues evoke imaginaries of pristine wilderness to attract travellers, these touristic environments are a product of globally circulating ideas of Arctic nature coupled with tourism businesses' need to create exchange value. As such, the key characteristic of this wilderness is that locally specific flora and fauna are overlooked in favour of distant landscape sceneries and the skies above. Unlike all other human sensations involving wilderness, the view is the easiest to commodify and is incorporated by the Arctic-themed enclaves into a highly standardised, safe and comfortable accommodation environment. Thus, wilderness is largely confined to an indoor experience in which the visual sensations dominate.</p

No full textIn recent years, international supply chains have come under stress at both the national and international levels. One such supply chain is batteries, a key technology to drive the low-carbon energy transition. In this paper, we use a systemic perspective to examine how to enhance resilience of the battery supply chain by analysing recent measures introduced as a response to the security concerns of the battery supply chain by the first and third largest economies in the world—the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). We focus on the measures introduced by the US and the EU in the period up to and including 2024 because these two jurisdictions dominate the increasing share of global lithium-ion battery cell demand with China and have introduced measures specifically to reduce dependency on the latter—the dominant actor in the battery supply chain. We seek to examine the measures introduced to enhance battery supply chain resilience in both the US and the EU against the framework of resilience—specifically, the three capacities of resilience: absorption, adaption, and transformation. We use these capacities of resilience as a framework for analysing different jurisdictional priorities around strengthening battery supply chains in the US and EU

No full textFinnish culture has long included the custom of going to cabins. Especially during their summer holidays, many people spend time in rural areas, often in leisure accommodations equipped with fewer amenities than their city homes. Cabins are usually located by the water and in quiet surroundings, as far away from the noise of the city as possible. Many people pick berries and mushrooms in the forest, fish, and prepare food on the grill or over a campfire.A lot of time is spent outdoors, and many tasks that require physical effort are performed. The sauna combined with the bath are an essential part of summer life. Relaxation is fostered by the quiet presence with loved ones, the closeness to nature, and the simplification of life.I try to convey with my images this cabin culture, which is not lost but somewhat in transition. In my exhibition, I combine photographs taken at our family's summer cabin in two different eras. My father built a cabin at his birthplace in the 1970s, where our family of seven spent several summers.I found family photos from that time in albums. I incorporated the characters depicted in them into the images I took during trips to the cabin in 2022–23. In 2023, I gave up the shared-use cabin my father left us as an inheritance, because my brother bought it for himself. However, invoking the Finnish “everybody´s right” of access to nature, walking through these cabin landscapes is still permitted for everyone.<br/
