    Harms are assessed inconsistently and reported inadequately Part 2: nonsystematic adverse events

    Objective: We examined nonsystematic adverse events (AEs) in Part 2 (of 2) of a study describing the assessment and reporting AEs in clinical trials. Study Design and Setting: We examined 21 trials of gabapentin for neuropathic pain (52 sources) and seven trials of quetiapine for bipolar depression (80 sources) using data from the Multiple Data Sources study. We extracted and compared information about nonsystematic AEs (i.e., AEs that were not assessed for every participant), including AEs categorized as “serious.” We recorded whether AEs were grouped by anatomic or physiological system. Results: Trials of the same drug reported information about different AEs. Information in public sources was inadequate for decision-making. No public source reported all AEs, or all serious AEs, identified in nonpublic sources about the same trial. Of trials with only public sources, 2/15 (13%) gabapentin and 0/3 (0%) quetiapine trials grouped AEs by anatomic or physiological system. Conclusion: Public sources contained little information about nonsystematic AEs, including serious AEs. Grouping might make nonsystematic AEs easier to detect; however, most public sources did not report grouped AEs. Standards are needed to improve the collection and reporting of nonsystematic AEs so that stakeholders can use trials to assess the balance of potential benefits and harms

    Found my place: The importance of faculty relationships for seniors' sense of belonging

    While previous literature documents the importance of sense of belonging for a positive educational experience, much of this research is focused on students early in their college careers and incorporates a single measure of sense of belonging. In contrast, the current study sought to explore whether senior students’ faculty-related engagement influences their sense of belonging, particularly their feelings of institutional acceptance as one aspect of sense of belonging. This study utilizes data from 8939 seniors in the 2014 administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement to explore these relationships. Results suggest that increased student–faculty interaction, use of effective teaching practices, and participation in research with faculty have a positive impact on feelings of institutional acceptance for seniors. Furthermore, certain student demographics (first-generation, age, gender, race/ethnicity), college experiences (enrollment type, online learning, STEM major, college grades, living situation, Greek affiliation), and institutional characteristics (control type, minority-serving institution, selectivity, Carnegie type) also play a role in this aspect of belongingness. Institutions can use this information to increase programming and resources for improving student engagement with faculty

    First Measurement of the Form Factors in Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^0 e^+\nu_e and Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^{*0} e^+\nu_e Decays

    We report on new measurements of Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic Ds+D^+_{s} decays using 3.19fb1^{−1} of e+ee^+e^− annihilation data sample collected at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results include branching fractions B\mathscr{B}(Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^{0} e^+\nu_e) = [ 3.25 ± 0.38 ( stat ) ± 0.16 ( syst ) ] × 103^{−3} and B\mathscr{B}(Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^{*0} e^+\nu_e) = [2.37 ± 0.26 (stat) ± 0.20 (syst)] × 103^{−3}, which are much improved relative to previous measurements, and the first measurements of the hadronic form-factor parameters for these decays. For Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^0 e^+\nu_e, we obtain f+f_+(0) = 0.720 ± 0.084 (stat) ± 0.013 (syst), and for Ds+K0e+νeD^+_{s}\rightarrow K^{*0} e^+\nu_e, we find form-factor ratios rV=V(0)/A1(0)r_V = V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.67 ± 0.34 ( stat ) ± 0.16 (syst) and r2r_2 = A2(0)/A1(0)A_2(0)/A_1(0) = 0.77 ± 0.28 (stat) ± 0.07 (syst)

    Precision Measurement of the Branching Fractions of η\eta' Decays

    Based on a sample of (1310.6±7.0)×106 J/ψ(1310.6 \pm 7.0) \times 10^6~J/\psi events collected with the BESIII detector, we present measurements of J/ψJ/\psi and η\eta^\prime absolute branching fractions using the process J/ψγηJ/\psi\rightarrow\gamma\eta^\prime. By analyzing events where the radiative photon converts into an e+ee^+e^− pair, the branching fraction for J/ψγηJ/\psi\rightarrow\gamma\eta^\prime is measured to be (5.27±0.03±0.05)×103(5.27\pm0.03\pm0.05)\times 10^{-3}. The absolute branching fractions of the five dominant decay channels of the η\eta^\prime are then measured independently for the first time and are determined to be B(ηηπ+π)\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \rightarrow \eta \pi^{+} \pi^{-}) == (29.90±0.03±0.55)(29.90±0.03±0.55)%, B(ηγπ+π)\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \rightarrow \gamma \pi^{+} \pi^{-}) == (41.24±0.08±1.24)(41.24±0.08±1.24)%, B(ηηπ0π0)\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \rightarrow \eta \pi^{0} \pi^{0}) == (21.36±0.10±0.92)(21.36±0.10±0.92)%, B(ηγω)\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \rightarrow \gamma \omega) == (2.489±0.018±0.074)(2.489±0.018±0.074)%, and B(ηγγ)\mathcal{B}(\eta^\prime \rightarrow \gamma \gamma) == (2.331±0.012±0.035)(2.331±0.012±0.035)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic

    Using a 3.19 fb1^{−1} data sample collected at the s\sqrt{s} = 4.178 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the rare decay Ds+ppˉe+νeD_{s}^{+} \rightarrow p \bar{p} e^{+} \nu_{e}. No significant signal is observed, and an upper limit of B(Ds+ppˉe+νe)<2.0×104\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+} \rightarrow p \bar{p} e^{+} \nu_{e}) < 2.0 \times 10^{-4} is set at the 90% confidence level. This measurement is useful input in understanding the baryonic transition of Ds+D_{s}^{+} mesons

    Understanding the Racial Discipline Gap in Schools

    We explore the discipline gap between Black and White students and between Hispanic and White students using a statewide student-level panel data set on Indiana public school students attending prekindergarten through 12th grade from 2008–2009 through 2013–2014. We demonstrate that the Black-White disciplinary gaps, defined in a variety of ways and robust to a series of specification tests, emerge as early as in prekindergarten and widen with grade progression. The magnitude of these disciplinary gaps attenuates by about half when we control for many student- and school-level characteristics, but it persists within districts and schools. In contrast, we find that Hispanic-White gaps are initially null and statistically insignificant at the prekindergarten/kindergarten level and attenuate substantially after adjustment for cross-school (district) variation and other covariates. We further disentangle the discipline gap using a decomposition technique that provides empirical support for the hypothesis that Black students nonrandomly sort into more punitive disciplinary environments

    Tracking methods and retention for a longitudinal sample of alcohol- and drug-involved women on probation and parole

    Attrition, or the progressive loss of individuals from a sample, poses a major problem in fields that carry out research to inform policy and program design. Attrition reduces statistical power by reducing sample size and compromises the external validity of findings by introducing sampling bias. If sampling bias results from disadvantages that act as barriers to research participation, then it promotes social injustice by excluding disadvantaged groups from the study. This study describes strategies used to retain participants in a longitudinal study of experiences of women under community supervision (probation or parole). It uses quantitative methods to examine sampling bias and qualitative methods to elicit accounts of participants’ explanations for being hard to reach and their recommendations for retention in future research. For participants who were and who were not retained, there were no statistically significant differences on several common quantitative predictors of retention. Hard‐to‐reach women identified residential mobility, low income, and busy lifestyles as main reasons research staff had difficulty contacting them and recommended repeated attempts at contact through multiple means. The article ends with recommendations for limiting attrition of disadvantaged, justice‐involved women in studies, and for steps to be taken when women are especially difficult to contact

    "Food is Environmentally and Culturally Specific!": A Preliminary Qualitative Study on U.S. Immigrant Parents' Perceptions of School Lunch

    Children spend most of their day hours in school, so the dietary choices they make during school days are important for their childhood development and later life. This research examined food choices among immigrant families with school-age children in Indiana, USA. Open-ended questions were answered by 52 immigrant parents in 2017. Parents who answered the questions had children in classes ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. NVivo 11 was used for the initial analysis of the dataset, and several themes were identified. After the initial analysis, the data were categorized into major themes to condense the themes. Thirty-eight (73%) of the respondents indicated that their children ate school lunch, 14 (27%) indicated that they prepared lunch for their children to eat at school, and 39 (75%), mostly from non-industrialized countries, indicated that their children ate their home-country staple foods for dinner and on non-school days. Parents indicated that schools are serving the needs of immigrant children by serving varieties of foods during lunchtime

    Helping Offenders Prosper through Employment (HOPE) is a university-based mentoring program that trains undergraduate students to serve as job mentors to incarcerated youth serving a sentence in Indiana’s juvenile correctional facilities. The purpose of this article is to describe HOPE’s mission, principles and components, underscoring how undergraduates are prepared and serve as credible role models to incarcerated youth during and after confinement to improve community reentry. This article is intended for practitioners interested in implementing evidence-based peer mentoring in juvenile correctional facilities as well as scholars interested in the study of factors that reduce juvenile recidivism

    Folding and Misfolding of Human Membrane Proteins in Health and Disease: From Single Molecules to Cellular Proteostasis

    Advances over the past 25 years have revealed much about how the structural properties of membranes and associated proteins are linked to the thermodynamics and kinetics of membrane protein (MP) folding. At the same time biochemical progress has outlined how cellular proteostasis networks mediate MP folding and manage misfolding in the cell. When combined with results from genomic sequencing, these studies have established paradigms for how MP folding and misfolding are linked to the molecular etiologies of a variety of diseases. This emerging framework has paved the way for the development of a new class of small molecule “pharmacological chaperones” that bind to and stabilize misfolded MP variants, some of which are now in clinical use. In this review, we comprehensively outline current perspectives on the folding and misfolding of integral MPs as well as the mechanisms of cellular MP quality control. Based on these perspectives, we highlight new opportunities for innovations that bridge our molecular understanding of the energetics of MP folding with the nuanced complexity of biological systems. Given the many linkages between MP misfolding and human disease, we also examine some of the exciting opportunities to leverage these advances to address emerging challenges in the development of therapeutics and precision medicine
