Evaluating the success rates and effectiveness of surgical and orthodontic interventions for impacted canines: a systematic review of surgical and orthodontic interventions and a case series

Objectives: The goal is to gather more information on orthodontic traction of impacted canines in the arch or their extraction. Methods: We focused our search on English-language papers published between January 1, 2004, and July 24, 2024 in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that were relevant to our topic. The search strategy employed the Boolean terms "impacted" AND "canine". In addition to the overview, this article discusses a number of clinical instances involving canine disinclusion. Results: The study analyzed 2748 papers from databases like Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, resulting in 1455 articles after eliminating duplicates. After examining titles and abstracts, 897 entries were removed. The remaining 558 papers were confirmed, with 543 items removed due to being off-topic. The study includes a qualitative analysis of the 15 final articles. Conclusions: This article concludes that both extraction and orthodontic traction are effective treatments for impacted canines, with the choice depending on patient-specific factors. Advances in surgical techniques and imaging technologies have improved outcomes, while a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach remains essential. Future research should focus on refining treatment selection criteria and integrating genetic and technological advancements

Diagnostic Challenges of Traumatic Ulcerative Granuloma with Stromal Eosinophilia in the Hard Palate

Traumatic ulcerative granuloma with stromal eosinophilia (TUGSE) is a benign lesion that may arise from the oral mucosa consisting in an ulcerative lesion usually localized in the tongue or cheek. Palate localization is very rare. Background/Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe a case of TUGSE occurring in the hard palate of an 83 y.o. female patient, manifesting as a non-painful growing palatal lesion approximately of 3.5 × 2 cm with firm consistency and a central area of erosion and erythema, the difficulties in clinical diagnosis, and the criteria for the differential diagnosis. Also, considering the rare occurrence of TUGSE in the palate, we performed a review of the literature too. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted following the 2020 PRISMA guidelines and a total of seven records were identified as matching the inclusion criteria of this study. Results Conclusions: Although TUGSE is a benign lesion, the clinical presentation as a proliferative and ulcerative lesion may be challenging for clinicians mainly when arising in rare sites of occurrence (e.g., the hard palate)

    No full text

Background/Objectives: Hematological cancers encompass a collection of heterogeneous conditions. The need for repeated treatments and prolonged hospitalization leads to a decrease in health-related quality of life. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on functioning scales, global health status, and symptoms in patients with hematological cancers. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically screened, and randomized controlled trials were included. The primary outcome was health-related quality of life assessed through the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model and 95% confidence intervals. Results: A total of 14 trials involving 837 patients with mixed cancer types were included. Most studies evaluated exercise interventions during hospitalization, with aerobic and resistance training at moderate intensity being the most common modalities and adherence rates ranging from 28% to 100%. Exercise programs significantly improved physical (SMD 0.23; 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.40; p = 0.008), emotional (SMD 0.19; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.36; p = 0.020) and cognitive functioning (SMD 0.20; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.37; p = 0.026), and global health status (SMD 0.24; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.46; p = 0.027). Significant reductions were observed in fatigue (SMD −0.33; 95% CI: −0.52 to −0.14; p = 0.001), pain (SMD −0.34; 95% CI: −0.53 to −0.15; p = 0.000), and insomnia (SMD −0.22; 95% CI: −0.41 to −0.03; p = 0.024). Heterogeneity was minimal across most domains, suggesting consistent findings. Conclusions: Exercise interventions are effective in enhancing functioning scales and global health status and reducing symptom burden in patients receiving intensive treatments. Future research is required to explore the long-term effects of exercise and develop tailored programs for specific hematologic malignancies and treatment settings

Rapid palate expansion's impact on nasal breathing: a systematic review

    No full text
Proper nasal breathing is essential for the craniofacial development of children. Maxillary constriction, often associated with impaired nasal breathing, results in a narrow upper jaw, posterior crossbite, and a high palatal vault, which elevates the nasal floor and increases nasal resistance. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a common orthodontic procedure that expands the maxillary dental arch, thereby widening the nasal cavity (NC). The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of RME on nasal breathing in pediatric patients. We searched databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using the keywords: ’maxillary,’ ’expansion,’ ’palatal,’ ’RME,’ ’disjunction,’ and ’nasal.’ The screening phase concluded with the selection of 13 publications for this review, encompassing randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case-control studies. The quality of the studies was assessed using established criteria, and data were extracted and analyzed. RME significantly increases the transverse dimensions of the maxilla and NC, contributing to an increase in NC volume. While structural improvements are consistent across studies, functional benefits, such as reduced nasal resistance, exhibit variability. Factors including age, pre-treatment skeletal conditions, and adenotonsillar hypertrophy influence the efficacy of RME. Certain devices, such as the Hybrid-Hyrax expander (HHE), have shown promising results in enhancing nasal ventilation. Overall, RME is an effective intervention for improving nasal breathing in children with maxillary constriction. However, further research is necessary to fully elucidate the variability in functional outcomes. Future studies should refine measurement techniques and compare different devices and protocols to optimize RME application

    No full text

Xylazine, a Drug Adulterant Whose Use Is Spreading in the Human Population from the U.S. to the U.K. and All Europe: An Updated Review

    No full text
Xylazine, commonly called “tranq” or “sleep cut”, is a strong α2-adrenergic agonist used in veterinary practice as a sedative, analgesic, and muscle-relaxing agent. It has never been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for human use, but its use by people is on the rise. In the last decades, due to its low cost and ease of availability, it has often been illicitly used due to its abuse potential as a drug for attempted sexual assault and intended poisoning. In addition, xylazine’s presence in the human body has also been related to domestic accidental events. Generally, it is combined with multiple other drugs, typically by intravenous injection, potentiating the doping effects. Xylazine’s mechanism of action is different from that of other illicit opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl, and it has no known antidote approved for use in humans. The combination with fentanyl prolongs the euphoric sensation and may heighten the risk of fatal overdose. Furthermore, it may cause adverse effects, including central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory depression, bradycardia, hypotension, and even death. Recent reports of xylazine misuse have risen alarmingly and describe people who become “zombies” because of the drug’s harmful effects on the human body, including serious wound formation that could even lead to limb amputation. This paper is an extensive review of the existing literature about xylazine and specifically deals with the chemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamic, and toxicological aspects of this compound, highlighting the most recent studies

Compositional and Defect Engineering of Metal Halide Perovskite-Based Heterojunctions for Efficient Nitrogen Photofixation

    No full text
Designing innovative photocatalysts for nitrogen photofixation is becoming crucial for the development of carbon-neutral ammonia production. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) provide a rich library of materials with an easy tuning of the semiconductor bandgap in order to integrate them in devices with different functionalities. An under-explored path is their exploitation to run a wide range of photoredox reactions mediated by solar light. Herein, heterojunction is developed based on the vacancy-ordered double-perovskite Cs2SnBr6 and carbon nitride nanosheets and demonstrate its ability in running the nitrogen photofixation reaction to produce ammonia under solar light. An investigation is done on full Cs2SnBr6/g-C3N4 system and an optimal range providing an outstanding ammonia evolution rate up to 270 μmol g−1 h−1is identified, which is quantified by means of ion selective electrode. Mechanistic insight into the photofixation reaction is obtained through a combination of advanced spectroscopy and computational modeling. Efficient ammonia production stems from an effective charge transfer from the perovskite to the nitrogen vacancies on the carbon nitride enabled by the proposed absence of self-trapped excitons in Cs2SnBr6, which also provides additional reactive sites through bromide vacancies. This work paves the way to MHP-based catalyst design strategy for sustainable ammonia production

Could the quality characteristics of virgin olive oil influence its geographical classification using untargeted infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics?

Ensuring the geographical authenticity of virgin olive oil (VOO) is essential for quality control, fraud prevention, and regional product protection. This study evaluates Near-Infrared (NIR), and Infrared (IR) spectroscopies combined with chemometrics to classify 97 VOO samples from Italy (Apulia, Tuscany) and foreign countries (Morocco, Jordan, Greece, Tunisia, Spain). Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) effectively classified VOOs according to geographical origin, with sensitivity and specificity values higher than 0.90 in prediction. However, we also examined whether chemical quality traits, such as peroxide values and fatty acid composition, could introduce biases in the classification models. The findings suggest that inconsistent quality grade of samples could affect classification. To mitigate this, a preliminary quality assessment is recommended before applying untargeted spectroscopic methods for authentication. This study highlights the importance of integrating quality control with untargeted approaches, giving suggestions for developing more reliable authentication techniques for VOO and other foods
