    High prevalence of chronic endometritis in women with nonstructural abnormal uterine bleeding and benefits of antimicrobial treatment on blood loss pattern: A prospective, observational study

    Objective The causal link between chronic endometritis (CE) and nonstructural abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) has been poorly investigated and requires further clarification. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of CE in women with nonstructural AUB and to assess the effect of CE cure on the menstrual blood loss pattern. Methods This prospective study was conducted between 2022 and 2024 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Bari, Italy. Women aged 20-45 undergoing hysteroscopy for AUB with confirmation of nonstructural causes were evaluated for CE and considered affected when both hysteroscopic and histologic/immunohistochemical (HIS/IHC) criteria were met. Women with CE were treated with specific culture-guided therapy. Cure ascertainment was confirmed by triple negativity at hysteroscopy-HIS/IHC-culture (Group A). In cases of a positive test, a second course of therapy, up to three courses, was repeated before declaring a persistent condition (Group B). At enrollment and at end-of-treatment evaluation, all participants completed a questionnaire to describe the bleeding characteristics and the Pictorial Blood Assessment Chart (PBAC). Serum hemoglobin and ferritin were also assessed. Results Chronic endometritis was diagnosed in 102 of 145 (70.3%) women with nonstructural AUB enrolled in the study. Out of 102 CE patients, 81 (79.4%) patients showed CE resolution after therapy (group A), while in 21 patients (20.6%) CE was persistent (group B). The duration of heavy bleeding before treatment (baseline) was similar in both groups (P = ns). In contrast, at the end of treatment, days of heavy bleeding, days of spotting, and PBAC scores decreased significantly in group A compared with both same-group baseline assessment and group B. Serum hemoglobin and ferritin levels in cured women (A) were significantly higher than in those with persistent CE (B). PBAC scores in group A at 3 and 6 months after the end of treatment showed persistence of cure benefits on AUB. Finally, among patients with CE diagnosis, both univariate and multivariate regressions showed a significant association between cure of CE and reduced bleeding. Conclusion Chronic endometritis was highly prevalent in women with nonstructural AUB in our cohort. Cure of CE by targeted antimicrobial therapy led to significant improvements in bleeding patterns

    L’esigenza di integrare la parola scritta – sia essa poetica, narrativa, saggistica – attraverso i codici pragmatici e storico-esistenziali dell’azione nasca in Pasolini con l’interessamento alla semiologia e alla linguistica implicato dall’esperienza cinematografica. Se ne possono in realtà riconoscere i prodromi già nel 1960, quando il poeta - nella rubrica tenuta su "Vie nuove", intitolata "Le belle bandiere" - comincia a parlare di "integrazione figurale". Pasolini ricava questo concetto dalla nozione di matrice auerbachiana di «interpretazione figurale», afferente al dominio della teologia e definita dal filologo tedesco come una «connessione fra due avvenimenti o due personaggi, nella quale [...] uno dei due significa non solamente se stesso, ma anche l’altro, e il secondo invece include il primo o lo integra». Pasolini sembra filtrarla – come spesso fa con concetti e nozioni mutuati da altri – in un’accezione del tutto personale, che diverge non poco dalla formulazione di Auerbach. Attraverso uno dei suoi proverbiali, fecondi “fraintendimenti”, lo scrittore svincola l’idea dell’interpretazione figurale dal suo ambito originale, storico-esegetico, intendendola come un fattore extratestuale, di natura pragmatica, in grado di “catalizzare” l’opera, aggiungendovi una “plasticità”, una pienezza di senso, che la realizza, la compie

    Prediction of Winter Wheat Parameters with Planet SuperDove Imagery and Explainable Artificial Intelligence

    This study investigated the application of high-resolution satellite imagery from SuperDove satellites combined with machine learning algorithms to estimate the spatiotemporal variability of some winter wheat parameters, including the relative leaf chlorophyll content (RCC), relative water content (RWC), and aboveground dry matter (DM). The research was carried out within an experimental field in Southern Italy during the 2024 growing season. Different machine learning (ML) algorithms were trained and compared using spectral band data and calculated vegetation indices (VIs) as predictors. Model performance was assessed using R2 and RMSE. The ML models tested were random forest (RF), support vector regressor (SVR), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB). RF outperformed the other ML algorithms in the prediction of RCC when using VIs as predictors (R2 = 0.81) and in the prediction of the RWC and DM when using spectral bands data as predictors (R2 = 0.71 and 0.87, respectively). Model explainability was assessed with the SHAP method. A SHAP analysis highlighted that GNDVI, Cl1, and NDRE were the most important VIs for predicting RCC, while yellow and red bands were the most important for DM prediction, and yellow and nir bands for RWC prediction. The best model found for each target was used to model its seasonal trend and produce a variability map. This approach highlights the potential of integrating ML and high-resolution satellite imagery for the remote monitoring of wheat, which can support sustainable farming practices

    Innovative approaches for the fermentation of black cabbage with improved nutritional and health-promoting traits

    Black cabbage can be promising to prepare innovative functional products. This research explores controlled fermentation as a new sustainable food production and stabilization technology to enhance the nutritional traits of black cabbage. Two different approaches were applied: soaking cut leaves in brine and pressing cut leaves adding salt. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (TB 11–32) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (LI 180-7) starter strains were employed to drive the fermentation and stabilize the final product for human consumption. Fermenting cut pressed leaves of black cabbage allowed to obtain a pH level below 4.6 and to ensure required safety aspects. Lactic Acid Bacteria fermentation (P-LAB) revealed a higher presence of some alcohols, carboxylic acids, terpenes, phenols, and dimethyl disulphide; the yeast fermentation (P-YST) promoted several esters. The fermented final product was enriched in polyphenol content of 3.7–4.6 times and of 2.7–3.4 times in antioxidant activity in comparison with the raw untreated material. Both P-YST and P-LAB fermented black cabbage favoured gut microbial growth and were beneficial for human health. P-YST specifically increased the production of some short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and relative esters and carboxylic acids, whereas released phenolics compounds in LAB fermented sample could prevent the formation of reactive free radicals and improve human cardiovascular health

    The contribution of this paper is to synthesise and evaluate the current literatures referring to the economic impacts and equity of transport infrastructures for the elderly. It presents the wider interactions between transport needs of the elderly and social exclusion. It summarises what is currently known about these issues, identifies gaps in the knowledge base and draws attention to opportunities for further research. Previous research results show that female and the elderly mobility needs are important to be accounted in mobility supply reforms and indicates the importance of clustering the population for providing useful and sustainable transport infrastructures and services. These elements will be further analysed and considered to formulate appropriate policies

    Due to the multi-factorial nature of most neurological disorders, developing multi-target compounds is still considered among the effective approaches to developing neuroprotective drugs. Despite the scientific advances in the areas of neurochemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology, there is still no effective treatment available that can delay the onset or slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and memory impairments. In the context of the challenging multitarget-directed-ligand (MTDL) design strategy of novel therapeutic agents for treating AD and related syndromes, progress has been made in the medicinal chemistry of drugs acting within and beyond the endocannabinoid system. Endogenous lipids, such as palmitoylethanolamide, that act simultaneously at GPCRs, ion channels, and PPARs can be taken as templates. In this Ph.D. thesis study, starting from the structures of small-molecules inhibiting well-established AD-related targets, such as cholinesterases (AChE and BChE) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, the synthesis has been carried out of novel rationally designed tricyclic indole-fused derivatives which interestingly proved to act as modulators (antagonists and/or inverse agonists) of the cannabinoid-related GPCRs GPR18 and GPR55, in some cases endowed with additional BChE-selective inhibition. The desired outcome is the combination of the anticholinesterase activity with the modulation of these poorly studied receptors, for a synergistic effect against neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Structure−activity relationships were analyzed, and selectivity versus cannabinoid (CB) and CB-like receptors was assessed. Chemical synthesis and analysis, radioligand binding and functional assays, enzymes’ inhibition kinetics and molecular modeling studies, in addition to allowing us to select candidates for in vivo pharmacological evaluation, provided us with useful medicinal chemistry information enabling the optimization of MTDLs against neurological disorders, potentially more effective than the currently available
