Worldwide opinion on climate change as measured via Twitter

    No full text
The last Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2014 has concluded that the earth is warming and human influence is the main cause. This has not led to the meaningful action by nations around the world to address the impacts from the report. One would assume that with overwhelming scientific consensus supporting anthropogenic climate change, the time for debate would be over. Yet public opinion on the topic remains divided. Twitter provides access to publicly available data where people express their opinion on a wide variety of topics including climate change. This dissertation explores the differences in public opinion between geographic regions around the world, as expressed on twitter, with 10,006 tweets collected over five days in March, 2020. It further explores the theme of the tweets to understand the variation in topics being discussed under the climate change umbrella in the different geographies. In addition, this paper also examines a number of machine learning models using differing techniques to assess their respective performance in opinion classification. The trends seen point to where future research should focus to expand on the results found in this paper

    No full text
The term Information overload refers to the excessive information that creates confusion or bias in the decision-making process. A decision-making process is a logical approach that helps in finding the main problem and to find out the main possible solutions based on the problems and the existing alternatives. However, in this respect, excessive information always creates challenges for the consumers and thus it affects the entire buying nature of the consumers. This research has shed its light on information overload in the case of fashion brands and their impact on the consumer buying behaviour and also on the rational decision-making process. In the end, it has been identified from quantitative research analysis that excessive information creates confusion and bias and thus it affects the decision-making process. Hence, the retailers must create more useful, attractive product descriptions for attracting more consumers and to get a more competitive advantage

However, it was found that there is positive significant effect of environmentally friendly options on sustainable public transportation in Dublin Ireland, there is negative significant effect of transportation cost on sustainable public transportation in Dublin Ireland and also that there is positive significant effect of less stressful transport system on sustainable public transportation in Dublin Ireland. It is therefore recommended that structure should be considered important as any entity interested in sustainable urban transportation system, because it will identify the issues and importance of each areas of sustainable transportation. Then will be able to learn about the objectives of that particular area of sustainable transportation, after that will also get an overview of some suggested actions and policy considerations to meet the objectives

How the factors of “social commerce constructs”, “perceive usefulness”, and “trust” shape the “intention to buy” of millennials

    No full text
This study was conducted in order to understand how social factors shape purchase intention in social commerce among millennials. According to the research, social commerce constructs, namely reviews, communities, recommendations and social media influencers, have an impact on perceived usefulness, which in turn creates trust among consumers. Finally, the trust generated through these constructs leads to the intention to buy on social commerce sites. While this model has been previously tested, this study makes an important contribution. First of all, the research results demonstrate that social media influencers can be in fact considered as a part of social factors that affect consumer behavior in social commerce. Secondly, each individual construct has proved to shape purchase intention, as opposed to the overall concept of social commerce constructs. Finally, reviews & ratings turned out to have the strongest impact on consumers among all other constructs, whereas social media influencers the lowest

Wellbeing and the gentle art: Emotion, engagement, meaning and accomplishment

Research suggests that subjective wellbeing decreases the risk of chronic illness and mental health issues, and is therefore a pertinent personal and societal concern. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has been associated with a range of desirable social and psychological outcomes. This quantitative study examined if significant differences would exist between practitioners and non-practitioners in levels of negative emotion and wellbeing (as measured by positive emotion, engagement, meaning and accomplishment). A further aim was to investigate if degrees of practice might influence these variables in practitioners. Participants (N = 653) completed an online questionnaire including a modified PERMA-profiler measure. Analysis showed that practitioners demonstrated significantly higher levels of wellbeing. Advanced practitioners demonstrated lower levels of negative emotion, while frequent practitioners exhibited higher levels of wellbeing. Future research is recommended to establish a causal relationship between BJJ and wellbeing as the sport may show promise as a mental health intervention

    No full text
The purpose of this quantitative mixed design study was to examine spirituality across a broad religious and non-religious context, while investigating the associated role of prosocial behaviour, life satisfaction, level of education and age. A convenience sample consisting of the general Irish population (n = 140) was adopted, involving males (n = 58) and females (n = 82) across different age groups and levels of education. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire comprising of the Prosocial Scale for Adults (Caprara G. V., 2005), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener E. D., 1985), and the Beliefs and Values Scale (King, 2006). Analyses revealed both prosocial-behaviour-and life satisfaction were significantly correlated to spirituality and significant differences were observed between spirituality and level of education. No significant differences were found-between age and spirituality, however components of every analysis proved useful for further research. Application of the current study was discussed along with future implications

    No full text
As digital advertising spendings are rising globally, spendings for sponsored search advertising is increasing at the same time. Today, sponsored search advertising is responsible for 22 cents in each ad dollar spending (WARC, 2019). Although organisations are spending a significant percentage of their ad spending on sponsored search ads, the overall click-through rate (CTR) for these ads is around 2% without any discrimination of the industries (Hubspot, 2020). Therefore, the researcher aspired to investigate the reasons why customers do not click on sponsored ads while organisations are spending a vast sum of money on these ads after going through the previous literature. Accordingly, the researcher aimed to present comprehensive research- a mixed method of study- by mainly focusing on the customer side but also reflecting the organisational side. Considering no enough prior studies is focusing on Turkish Millennials' perceptions on sponsored search advertising, the researcher focused on this group via an online survey through Google Forms with the participation of one hundred and four respondents as the quantitative part of this research. Respondents' Search Engine Awareness (SEA), the factors influential on the click decision for paid search ads, and Customer-Perceived Value (CPV) of using search engines for online searches have been examined with its benefits and costs. Besides, as the qualitative part of the research, telephone interviews have been done with two digital marketers working in two different large-scaled and startup level organisations from finance and e-commerce sectors. Their preferred method of search engine advertising has been investigated with the benefits and drawbacks of both methods among Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Sponsored Search Advertising. The findings illustrated that Turkish Millenials able to differentiate organic results from paid links with a preference for clicking on organic results since they have trust issues with paid search ads.Relevancy and being familiar with the brand of the ad are crucial factors to click on these ads. Furthermore, the data privacy issue is dispensable for Turkish Millennials when it comes to the relevant results gathered conveniently from searching online through search engines. Telephone interviews with employees of the organisations revealed that large-scaled organisations work with advertising agencies prefer focusing on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for their long term of interest. In contrast, startup organisations do digital marketing practices inhouse and focus on sponsored search ads as their short-term plan to secure online visibility. Being measurable and controllable are desirable features of sponsored search advertising as a result of real-time results for organisations

Can arousing cognitive dissonance help turn the tide on plastic pollution?

    No full text
Much research has pointed to the effectiveness of cognitive dissonance treatments in promoting pro-environmental behaviour and suggested that information-based treatments may have limited effectiveness. The current study sought to examine the impact of arousing cognitive dissonance in relation to the issue of plastic pollution in a between-group experiment, with participants (N = 24) randomly assigned to either a dissonance or information-only condition. Participants’ psychophysiological responses to ocean plastic pollution stimuli were measured via Galvanic Skin Response and Electroencephalography, while self-report questionnaires measured participants’ feelings relating to the issue and intention to reduce their plastic waste, having viewed the stimuli. No significant differences were found between the dissonance and information-only conditions on any of the measures. However, due to the methods used and the limitations of this study, further research is recommended to ascertain the impact of incorporating dissonance-arousing techniques into messaging aimed at encouraging people to reduce their plastic waste
