Self-esteem, anxiety, depression and coping mechanisms and their correlation to alcohol consumption among university students

    No full text
This study examines the relationship between depression, anxiety, self-esteem and coping mechanisms in regard to alcohol consumption among university students. Gender-based differences were also measured across these variables. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was utilised. Participants (N = 95) were recruited via convenience and snowball sampling, as the survey was published on social media platforms and completed online. No significant relationship between alcohol consumption and levels of depression, anxiety, and self-esteem were found. However, analyses showed that binge drinkers showed higher levels in recently developed coping than non-binge drinkers. A significant relationship between weekly alcohol units consumed and recently developed coping was also found. Analyses showed that males and females had similar scoring in levels of depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and coping. However, females showed higher levels of “less-useful” coping. Similar results were also found between genders in levels of alcohol consumption. However, males consumed more alcohol units weekly than females

    No full text
The construction industry, which contributes significantly to the Nigerian economy, has grown in the past few years, however, the industry is plagued with many problems ranging from; project abandonment, project delays, poor resource management, poor financing, unethical practices etc. For the industry to progress, effective time, resource and cost management is necessary and Earned Value Management is on way to solve the problem. Earned Value Management is useful in monitoring and controlling project cost, schedule and scope to ensure successful completion. This research applies earned value analysis to a construction project using Microsoft Project 2016 to measure the performance and analyze the construction project with respect to cost and schedule. Interviews were used to obtain project information and determine the knowledge level and acceptance of earned value in the Nigerian construction industry. The research revealed very low use of earned value management in by construction managers. It is recommended that professional bodies focus on enhancing awareness and training of construction managers in the use of earned value management and bring the industry up to international standard

Anxiety, relationship satisfaction and Pphubbing as predictors of excessive social media use

    No full text
Social media has become a feature of every day modern life. While for many individuals social media use may be fervent but not addictive, some can participate in social media activities excessively and problematically. The primary aim of this correlational study was to investigate whether anxiety, relationship satisfaction and partner phubbing predict excessive social media use. A convenient sample of 126 adults ranging in age from 18 years old to 65 years participated in an online survey that included the Bergan Social Media Addiction Scale, the Relationship Satisfaction Scale and the Partner Phubbing Scale. Results indicated that anxiety and Pphubbing significantly predict social media use with substantially meaningful effect size, supporting the idea that excessive use of social media indicates a need to deal with uncomfortable feelings (anxiety) and relationship issues arising from the influence of technology (Pphubbing). Future research should adopt experimental and longitudinal designs to further investigate causality

What effect has technology integration in Irish libraries had on the public librarian's skillset?

    No full text
Public libraries across Ireland have been integrating technology into their service in recent years. This research aims to examine how the public librarian’s skillset has shifted in response to this integration. A mixed methods approach was used consisting of a survey and interviews with librarians in the Irish library service. Data indicated that some degree of technological skill is needed to fulfil the duties of a modern public librarian. Research revealed that delivering a public library service is a collaborative effort, and thus technology skills will vary among staff. Data indicated that technology has resulted in a higher degree of specialisation among librarians’ skillsets when compared to the “traditional” library services of the past. These findings concur with existing literature which suggests that the ongoing integration of technology in libraries is adding a new dimension to the field, and librarians will need to adapt accordingly as this trend continues

    No full text
Performance management system has been influential as a method that would help improve individual and organizational efficiency. This demonstrated the need to undertake this research with a case study approach in titled challenges faced and the best practices in performance management system implementation in the Indian manufacturing sector. The main goals of this research are to explain the nature of PMS, to examine the methods used in PMS, to recognize the challenges faced by managers and to discuss best practices in PMS. To achieve these targets, managers provided in-depth information on their performance management program and interviews with four managers were conducted. The research found that the performance management program was not effective and therefore the company faced certain issues such as staff discontent, lack of training and high attrition rate. It was proposed that management review its performance management program before it becomes a debacle and make a few improvements, such as coaching managers in conflict management and offer more inherent incentives based on human resource efficiency and provide consistent feedback with positive criticism to encourage the workforce to perform better

A study of ensemble machine learning to improve telecommunication customer churn prediction

    No full text
The telecom industry has an ever-increasing number of service providers. With the competition between service providers to attract more customers by making attractive offers, there is an incentive for customers to keep switching service providers. Service providers can stay ahead of the game by making proactive attractive offers and retain customers. Machine learning is applied to predict those customers most likely to churn. This research uses state of the art H2O stacked ensemble methods to improve the performance accuracy of the base models. The tools that are used for the research are RapidMiner, which is an analytical automation tool, and python coding implementing the H2O framework specifically designed for artificial intelligence. Traditional models are implemented in RapidMiner, namely the Generalized Linear Model, Gradient boosted trees, Deep Learning, and logistic regression. The models implemented in Python using the H2O framework are Stacked ensemble, deep learning, and distributed random forest trees. Base results are compared against ensemble methods and evaluated on various performance metrics
