Do working public librarians in Ireland perceive and run their libraries as community centres?
This study explores the role of the public library in the community from the perspective of Irish
librarians. There is a global conversation taking place on the role of the public library in the
community, and whether the concept of the public library as a community centre has always existed
or is a new phenomenon. While there is a growing body of literature internationally on this topic,
the researcher explored the topic in an Irish context.
The researcher used qualitative methods. She interviewed four experienced librarians working in the
public library system.
The study would seem to suggest that public librarians in Ireland do perceive their libraries as
community centres. It further suggests that the librarians consider that Irish libraries have always
had a community service element to their role and that as the needs of society have changed Irish
libraries have evolved to meet those needs
Values, drugs & rock ‘n’ roll: the relationship between music preference, values, and attitudes to drugs
The study aimed to explore the relationship between an individual’s music preference, how they value Stimulation and Conformity, and how this relates to their attitudes towards recreational drug use. Participants (N=791) completed an online questionnaire which included questions from the STOMP, SVSS, and Generalized Attitudes Measure. Analysis showed that a preference for Upbeat and Conventional music styles was the strongest predictor for less favourable attitudes to drugs and this music preference had a weak positive significant relationship with valuing Conformity more. Energetic and Rhythmic & Intense and Rebellious music preferences had a weak positive significant relationship with more favourable attitudes to recreational drug use. Energetic and Rhythmic music preference also had a weak positive significant relationship with valuing Simulation more. This study identifies a relationship between certain music genres, one’s values and their attitudes towards recreational drug use, which highlights potential interventions surrounding drug-related incidents at music events
A study on the effectiveness of communication patterns on employee performance in Iroko Television, Nigeria
Communication is essential in any organisation as it determines the effectiveness of the share of information which further enhances the order, coordination and synergy between departments of an organisation. For communication to be effective it must be characterised by the 7C’s framework (concrete, considerate, clear, concise, courteous, complete and correct) Communication is also essential for employee performance as it effectively engages employees, this study thus had its central objective as investigating the role of effective communication in Iroko Television (TV). The study was divided into five (5) chapters, the study also adopted the quantitative research methodology which collected data from the distribution of 70 questionnaires amongst employees in Iroko TV. 65 questionnaires were collected and analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences was done. The study discovered that communication in Iroko TV is characterised by the 7C’s framework which has enhanced the performance of staff, employees had become more productive in keeping up to task, meeting daily, having harmonious coordination between employer-employees and further enhancing organisational values and ethics. The research thus recommends that the process of communication should be solidified for greater impact, this can be done through creating a department to monitor process of information should be established
Forecasting and analysis of COVID-19 pandemic
Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause various diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, they cause a range of respiratory disorders. This paper presents the analysis of the transmission of COVID19 disease and predicts the scale of the pandemic, the recovery rate as well as the fatality rate. We have used some of the well-known machine learning techniques as well as mathematical modeling techniques such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Bayesian Ridge and Polynomial Regression and SIR model.
Machine learning algorithms like Support Vector Regressor have the lowest R2 score = 0.8273 among Polynomial Regression, and Bayesian Ridge Regression, and the highest RMSE value = 124328.5297 amongst the three models, which tells us that the Support Vector Regressor is the least preferred model to choose. Bayesian Ridge Regression has R2 score = 0.9321 and the lowest RMSE value = 71920.7332 to be the best model among the three
Causality orientations as mediators between smartphone addiction and daytime sleepiness in adults with intellectual disabilities
Extant research highlights the prevalence of smartphone addiction (SA) and associated psychopathologies, including daytime sleepiness, undergraduate or school-aged students, and how self-determination predicts these behaviours. However, sparse research investigates these phenomena in adults with intellectual disabilities. Online surveys were used to determine SA risk, daytime sleepiness and self-determination scores in adults with intellectual disabilities in education. Mediational analyses found a weak positive relationship between SA and daytime sleepiness was not mediated by controlled and impersonal orientations. Cross-sectional analysis highlighted no differences in SA scores between people aged under 22 and over 21. A moderate positive relationship was found between SA, controlled and impersonal, but not autonomous orientations. Contrary to previous research with general populations, interventions reducing controlled and impersonal orientations, rather than enhancing autonomy, may be effective in reducing SA. Findings may assist future research investigating SA in people with ID, and in the Irish context
Adult attachment styles, loneliness, gender, age and their relationship to social media addiction
The following study aimed to explore the relationship between attachment styles, gender, age and loneliness in relation to social media addiction. Participants (N=99) were required to be above 18 years of age and to currently use social media. Participants were recruited online via social networking sites where a link was posted to the survey. The survey consisted of the measurement of attachment qualities to measure secure, avoidant and ambivalence-worry and ambivalence merger attachment styles, along with UCLA loneliness measure and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. The results found there was a significant positive correlation attachment styles and loneliness levels. There was a significant relationship between attachment and social media addiction. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between loneliness and social media addiction. Also, women were statistically significant in social media addiction levels. Finally, age was negatively correlated with loneliness and social media addiction levels
Mental health, resilience and emotional regulation in sales representatives in the Irish tech industry
This study was conducted to investigate mental health, resilience and emotional regulation in sales representatives of the tech industry in Ireland. Participants consisted of 71 (n=71) females (n=30) and males (n=41). A questionnaire was sent to participants using web based mediums. Participant’s mental health was investigated using the DASS21(Lovibond & Lovibond,1995). Resilience was measured using the BRS (Smith, 2008) and emotional regulation was investigated using the ERQ (Gross & John, 2003). The data sourced was analysed using Independent t-tests, Mann- Whitney U together with Spearman and Pearson’s correlations. Overall, the study found that participants had normal levels of stress, anxiety and depression. A significant difference did exist in anxiety levels between females and males together with a relationship found between stress levels and sales targets perceived to be difficult. The participants were found to have normal resilience, with resilience scores having a negative correlation with depression and anxiety. In relation to emotional regulation strategies, the use of cognitive reappraisal was more frequent than emotional suppression with emotional suppression found to be positively correlated to stress and depression. It is hoped that the results of this research can be used to show the importance of training to promote good mental health in sales organisations
