Intergrating information extraction and graph analytics to investigate influential enties in a corpus

    No full text
The sheer rate at which data is generated effectively renders manual information extraction inefficient. Further, the rate and size of the data that is produced easily lead to information overload. However, the advances in Artificial Intelligence technologies, especially Natural Language Processing, make accurate automatic extraction possible. In order to handle this ever-evolving data, knowledge graphs offer a practical solution because they can handle data and its relationships. This research aims to investigate the most influential entities from a corpus by combining information extraction and graph analytics, with the BioRED dataset as the use case data. A custom SpaCy NER module was trained to extract entities from the documents and achieved an F1 score of 75.9188%. From the resulting knowledge graph, with the aid of graph data science centrality algorithms, the finding of the study indicates “GDM” as the most influential entity

The pandemic has resulted in increased levels of depression and anxiety worldwide. There is conflicting research on the relationship between creativity and mental health. Research exploring the experiences of female visual artists is limited. This study explores the experiences of artistic creativity and mental health amongst female visual artists specialising in the discipline of painting during the pandemic. Six female visual artists participated in semi – structured interviews. Thematic Analysis of data revealed 6 key themes: power of art, gift of time, blossoming of creativity, positive life changes, environmental factors and loss of opportunities. Findings indicate that creativity had a therapeutical effect by facilitating escape from negativity, maintaining positive mindset, triggering positive feelings and shifting existential meaning. Time gained during the pandemic was a catalyst for creative flourishing. Further research is required to explore experiences of creativity and mental health amongst artists with diagnosed mental illness during the pandemic

Dublin City Library users’ awareness and perceptions of public library services

    No full text
Irish public libraries have changed drastically in the past 25 years. Guided by a series of national public library strategies, Irish library authorities joined within the national consortium of Libraries Ireland to provide linked services throughout the country. The linked system and its facilities receive a lot of use and focus by library authorities but have not featured in much academic research since their respective launches. To address this gap in research this study was designed to measure levels of awareness and perceptions of recent service developments locally and nationally. This was completed with a questionnaire aimed at Dublin City Library users. The survey found that active library users are more likely to be aware of national services than non-users. Local services from Dublin City Libraries could be promoted more to users as awareness levels were much lower than for national services. Despite lower awareness, all services included were positively perceived by respondents, though future research could investigate public reception on a deeper level

Exploring the role of religiousness/spirituality plays in the lives of Irish college students

    No full text
The study investigated how religiousness and spirituality affects Irish college students, mental health, life satisfaction and academic self-efficacy. The eighty-five participants had to fill out an online survey made up of psychological questionnaires to assess the study's variables. The study found that the subscales of religiousness/spirituality cumulatively affected depression and life satisfaction but not anxiety, stress, and academic self-efficacy. It was found that only the religious/spiritual coping subscale was a significant predictor of depression. Private religious practices, forgiveness and religious/spiritual coping subscales were significant predictors of life satisfaction. Males reported higher levels of religious support, religious/spiritual coping and engaged in more private religious practices. The study suggests that religiousness/spirituality has a mixed influence on the lives of Irish college students. The study can be applied by mental health professionals and the higher education sector. For more concrete conclusions, much more future research is needed. Limitations, future directions, and implications are discussed

This purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between transformational leadership when views through the lens of Job- Demands Resources Theory and employee engagement withinthe Irish Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. "Transformational leadership was selected specifically in the context of the Irish FMCG industry and the relationship and influence that leaders utilizing this approach have, to ensure that employees within these organizations are deeply engaged in their roles and committed to the company's vision."Through a combination of qualitative interviews with leaders and followers from two distinct organizations, and an extensive review of existing literature, the study reveals the nuances of how transformational leadership, when viewed through the lens of the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory, can influence employee engagement. The data returned was rich and fulsome with strong agreement across the stakeholders as to the positive impact of Transformational Leadership on employee engagement within the Irish FMCG Industry. A series of conclusions were drawn from the data and recommendations are suggested in Chapter 5

    No full text
This paper gives a critical analysis of the effectiveness of succession planning practices in retaining talented employees in Zimbabwe’s two hotel brands. Theories guiding the study were Homan’s (1961) social exchange theory and Vroom’s (1964) expectancy theory. The main objectives of the study were to explore the current succession planning practices, investigate how effective they are in retaining talent, identify challenges and recommend strategies to retain talented employees. According to the literature reviewed, succession planning has a significant impact on employee retention. The study adopted a qualitative approach and structured interviews were conducted to collect data. Through thematic analysis, four main themes addressing research questions and objectives emerged. Findings revealed how potential talent was identified and nurtured. Major challenges included, subjective performance evaluations, failure to embrace succession planning, financial constraints, and skills flight. It was established that organisations require efficient succession planning programmes to retain their valuable skills

A Machine Learning Approach to Identifying Malicious DNS Requests through Server Log Analysis

    No full text
In the dynamic landscape of digital connectivity, the Domain Name System (DNS) plays a significant role in internet infrastructure, enabling the translation of human readable domain names into machine understandable IP addresses. Unfortunately, this critical service also presents a vulnerable entry point for cyber attackers to execute a range of malicious activities including phishing, malware distribution, and domain hijacking. Traditional manual analysis of DNS traffic struggles to cope with the volume and complexity of modern cyber threats. To address this challenge, a comprehensive approach is proposed that harnesses the capabilities of machine learning for the identification of malicious DNS requests through server log analysis. The primary objective of this research is to design, implement, and evaluate a robust machine learning framework capable of distinguishing between benign and malicious DNS requests. Using a diverse dataset of server logs, appropriate preprocessing techniques are employed to cleanse and transform the raw data into a suitable format for analysis. The approach focuses on the identification of relevant features and the engineering of domain-specific attributes that capture the behavior of both legitimate and malicious requests. Through a comprehensive evaluation process, a range of machine learning algorithms suitable for classification tasks are explored. The chosen models undergo critical assessment using established evaluation metrics to quantify their performance in differentiating between malicious and benign DNS requests
